Book excerpt: The Mixture Condensation Process is compared with the Expansion Condensation Process and experimental data shows the former process produced 2.75 times the power density of the latter process at the same gas density. Experimental results were obtained and equations were derived for point emitters relating current and voltage with the number of point emitters; and the minimum emitter point density with gas velocity and conversion length. The minimum point density is independent of gas density and power density. In a new design conversion efficiency is improved with (1) an emitter of increased point density interspersed with steam orifices, resulting in a smaller exciter voltage and a better mixture of the ions with the steam for production of the charged aerosol; (2) a collector with an increased point density, resulting in a smaller voltage drop to discharge the charged aerosol.

Book excerpt: This book presents new and important research on electric power and its generation, transmission and efficiency. The world is becoming increasingly electrified. For the foreseeable future, coal will continue to be the dominant fuel used for electric power production. The low cost and abundance of coal is one of the primary reasons for this. Electric power transmission, a process in the delivery of electricity to consumers, is the bulk transfer of electrical power. Typically, power transmission is between the power plant and a substation near a populated area. Electricity distribution is the delivery from the substation to the consumers. Due to the large amount of power involved, transmission normally takes place at high voltage (110 kV or above). Electricity is usually transmitted over long distance through overhead power transmission lines. Underground power transmission is used only in densely populated areas due to its high cost of installation and maintenance, and because the high reactive power gain produces large charging currents and difficulties in voltage management. A power transmission system is sometimes referred to colloquially as a "grid"; however, for reasons of economy, the network is rarely a true grid. Redundant paths and lines are provided so that power can be routed from any power plant to any load centre, through a variety of routes, based on the economics of the transmission path and the cost of power. Much analysis is done by transmission companies to determine the maximum reliable capacity of each line, which, due to system stability considerations, may be less than the physical or thermal limit of the line. Deregulation of electricity companies in many countries has led to renewed interest in reliable economic design of transmission networks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A three-year program to develop and advance Electrofluid Dynamic (EFD) Power Generation technology is described. A range of axisymetric EFD channel sizes from 1/12 inch operating with inlet pressures of 700 psig to the 1/48 inch channel designed to operate with 3000 psig were experimentally studied. Failure of gas-breakdown scaling laws prevented the designed 70 watts from being achieved with the small sizes at high pressure. Experimental work on the high voltage breakdown of high pressure gases including air, Hydrogen, SF6, Argon, Nitrogen CO2, and mixtures using various Freons shows a degradation of anticipated strength at about 10 to the 8th power V/M. Theoretical analyses and experimental measurements have been made on the droplet size and density in EFD generators using humid air for EFD channel sizes from 1/4 inch to 1/48 inch. Analyses also include nucleation and growth of Mercury and steam. A preliminary design study of the short duration airborne 6 MW conversion system and a long duration 1 KW and 100 KW ground based system using EFD is included. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High Temperature Gas Dynamics is a primer for scientists, engineers, and students who would like to have a basic understanding of the physics and the behavior of high-temperature gases. It is a valuable tool for astrophysicists as well. The first chapters treat the basic principles of quantum and statistical mechanics and how to derive thermophysical properties from them. Special topics are included that are rarely found in other textbooks, such as the thermophysical and transport properties of multi-temperature gases and a novel method to compute radiative transfer. Furthermore, collision processes between different particles are discussed. Separate chapters deal with the production of high-temperature gases and with electrical emission in plasmas, as well as related diagnostic techniques. This new edition adds over 100 pages and includes the following updates: several sections on radiative properties of high temperature gases and various radiation models, a section on shocks in magneto-gas-dynamics, a section on stability of 2D ionized gas flow, and additional practical examples, such as MGD generators, Hall and ion thrusters, and Faraday generators.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: - This derivative volume stemming from content included in our seminal Power Electronics Handbook takes its chapters related to renewables and establishes them at the core of a new volume dedicated to the increasingly pivotal and as yet under-published intersection of Power Electronics and Alternative Energy. While this re-versioning provides a corollary revenue stream to better leverage our core handbook asset, it does more than simply re-package existing content. Each chapter will be significantly updated and expanded by more than 50%, and all new introductory and summary chapters will be added to contextualize and tie the volume together. Therefore, unlike traditional derivative volumes, we will be able to offer new and updated material to the market and include this largely original content in our ScienceDirect Energy collection. - Due to the inherently multi-disciplinary nature of renewables, many engineers come from backgrounds in Physics, Materials, or Chemical Engineering, and therefore do not have experience working in-depth with electronics. As more and more alternative and distributed energy systems require grid hook-ups and on-site storage, a working knowledge of batteries, inverters and other power electronics components becomes requisite. Further, as renewables enjoy broadening commercial implementation, power electronics professionals are interested to learn of the challenges and strategies particular to applications in alternative energy. This book will bring each group up-to-speed with the primary issues of importance at this technological node. - This content clarifies the juncture of two key coverage areas for our Energy portfolio: alternative sources and power systems. It serves to bridge the information in our power engineering and renewable energy lists, supporting the growing grid cluster in the former and adding key information on practical implementation to the latter. - Provides a thorough overview of the key technologies, methods and challenges for implementing power electronics in alternative energy systems for optimal power generation - Includes hard-to-find information on how to apply converters, inverters, batteries, controllers and more for stand-alone and grid-connected systems - Covers wind and solar applications, as well as ocean and geothermal energy, hybrid systems and fuel cells

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Suitable for advanced undergraduates and graduate students in engineering, this text introduces the concepts of plasma physics and magnetohydrodynamics from a physical viewpoint. The first section of the three-part treatment deals mainly with the properties of ionized gases in magnetic and electric fields, essentially following the microscopic viewpoint. An introduction surveys the concepts of ionized gases and plasmas, together with a variety of magnetohydrodynamic regimes. A review of electromagnetic field theory follows, including motion of an individual charged particle and derivations of drift motions and adiabatic invariants. Additional topics include kinetic theory, derivation of electrical conductivity, development of statistical mechanics, radiation from plasma, and plasma wave motion. Part II addresses the macroscopic motion of electrically conducting compressible fluids: magnetohydrodynamic approximations; description of macroscopic fluid motions; magnetohydrodynamic channel flow; methods of estimating channel-flow behavior; and treatment of magnetohydrodynamic boundary layers. Part III draws upon the material developed in previous sections to explore applications of magnetohydrodynamics. The text concludes with a series of problems that reinforce the teachings of all three parts.

Channel assembly operations were completed approximately two weeks ahead of schedule, even though the operation was approximately four weeks behind schedule at the start of the quarter. At the close of the quarter, seven of the nine upper coil pancakes had been installed and the eighth pancake was in position for final placement on the magnet. Burner testing was resumed; however, only one firing with the traversing pressure probe and electrode test assembly installed was performed.
