The EFD wind driven generator directly converts wind energy to electrical energy without moving parts except, possibly, for directing it into the wind. A theoretical analysis is presented of the EFD wind driven generator, including a computer study of electric field geometry and an analysis of charged colloid production requirements. Experimental data obtained with the EFD test rig and a small wind tunnel designed and built for this program are described. Future plans are also detailed.

Book excerpt: The objective of the program is to conduct research leading to the development of EFD wind driven generators. In such generators, the wind blows through suitably oriented arrays of electrodes, transports charged particles against an electrical potential gradient, and thereby generates electrical power directly without moving parts. Significant progress has been made in accomplishing major research objectives. During the past year, the effort was directed toward the achievement of three milestones, namely: development of a laboratory method for the production of an adequate supply of suitably low mobility charged droplets for the testing of generator performance; experimental verification of generator performance theory; and development of methods for practical production of charged droplets.

In contrast, the Electrofluid Dynamic (EFD) wind driven generator has no fundamental limits on cross sectional area. It is a direct energy conversion device which employs unipolar charged particles transported by the wind against a retarding voltage gradient to a high potential. As no moving parts are exposed to the wind, extremely large power units may be feasible.
