Download or read book The Earth's Ionosphere written by Michael C. Kelley and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2009-06-12 with total page 593 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although interesting in its own right, due to the ever-increasing use of satellites for communication and navigation, weather in the ionosphere is of great concern. Every such system uses trans-ionospheric propagation of radio waves, waves which must traverse the commonly turbulent ionosphere. Understanding this turbulence and predicting it are one of the major goals of the National Space Weather program. Acquiring such a prediction capability will rest on understanding the very topics of this book, the plasma physics and electrodynamics of the system. - Fully updated to reflect advances in the field in the 20 years since the first edition published - Explores the buffeting of the ionosphere from above by the sun and from below by the lower atmosphere - Unique text appropriate both as a reference and for coursework

Book excerpt: The Earth's Ionosphere: Plasma Physics and Electrodynamics emphasizes the study of plasma physics and electrodynamics of the ionosphere, including many aeronomical influences. The ionosphere is somewhat of a battleground between the earth's neutral atmosphere and the sun's fully ionized atmosphere, in which the earth is embedded. One of the challenges of ionosphere research is to know enough about these two vast fields of research to make sense out of ionospheric phenomena. This book provides insights into how these competing sources of mass, momentum, and energy compete for control of the ionosphere. Some of the topics discussed include the fundamentals of ionospheric plasma dynamics; equatorial plasma instabilities; high-latitude electrodynamics; and instabilities and structure in the high-latitude ionosphere. Throughout this text only the region above 90 km are discussed, ignoring the D region entirely. This publication is a good source of information for students and individuals conducting research on earth's ionosphere.

Book Synopsis Magnetosphere-Ionosphere Coupling by : Y. Kamide
Download or read book Magnetosphere-Ionosphere Coupling written by Y. Kamide and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past two decades a succession of direct observations by satellites, and of extensive computer simulations, has led to the realization that the polar ionosphere plays a principal role in large-scale magnetospheric processes - a manifestation of the physics linkage involved in solar-terrestrial interactions. Spatial/temporal variations in high-latitude electromagnetic phenomena, such as dynamic aurorae, electric fields and currents, have proved to be extremely complex. Now the challenge is to comprehend the vast amount of complicated measurements made in this magnetosphere-ionosphere sysstem of the Earth. This book addresses the electrical coupling between the hot, but dilute, magnetospheric plasma and the cold, but dense, plasma in the ionosphere. In five major chapters, this book presents: - basic properties of magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling; - morphology of electric fields and currents at high latitudes; - global modeling of magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling; - modeling of ionospheric electrodynamics; - current issues, such as auroral particle acceleration, substorms, penetration of high-latitude fields into low latitudes.
Book Synopsis Cross-Scale Coupling and Energy Transfer in the Magnetosphere-Ionosphere-Thermosphere System by : Yukitoshi Nishimura
Download or read book Cross-Scale Coupling and Energy Transfer in the Magnetosphere-Ionosphere-Thermosphere System written by Yukitoshi Nishimura and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2021-12-07 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cross-Scale Coupling and Energy Transfer in the Magnetosphere-Ionosphere-Thermosphere System provides a systematic understanding of Magnetosphere-Ionosphere-Thermosphere dynamics. Cross-scale coupling has become increasingly important in the Space Physics community. Although large-scale processes can specify the averaged state of the system reasonably well, they cannot accurately describe localized and rapidly varying structures in space in actual events. Such localized and variable structures can be as intense as the large-scale features. This book covers observations on quantifying coupling and energetics and simulation on evaluating impacts of cross-scale processes. It includes an in-depth review and summary of the current status of multi-scale coupling processes, fundamental physics, and concise illustrations and plots that are usable in tutorial presentations and classrooms. Organized by physical quantities in the system, Cross-Scale Coupling and Energy Transfer in the Magnetosphere-Ionosphere-Thermosphere System reviews recent advances in cross-scale coupling and energy transfer processes, making it an important resource for space physicists and researchers working on the magnetosphere, ionosphere, and thermosphere. Describes frontier science and major science around M-I-T coupling, allowing for foundational understanding of this emerging field in space physics Reviews recent and key findings in the cutting-edge of the science Discusses open questions and pathways for understanding how the field is evolving

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report provides an introductory overview of electrodynamic interactions between the magnetosphere and ionosphere. In the first half of the paper, the viscous interaction and magnetic merging models for driving convection are described. The notion of adiabatic heating as a natural consequence of convection is introduced, in conjunction with a quasi-empirical model for the magnetospheric potential. The second half of the paper concerns observations of electrodynamic quantities taken in the topside ionosphere in the polar cap and auroral oval.
Book Synopsis Atmospheric Electrodynamics by : H. Volland
Download or read book Atmospheric Electrodynamics written by H. Volland and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-07 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book resulted from lectures which I gave at the Universities of Kyoto, Cologne, and Bonn. Its objective is to summarize in a unifying way two other wise rather separately treated subjects of atmospheric electrodynamics: elec tric fields of atmospheric origin, in particular thunderstorm phenomena and related problems on the one hand, and magnetic fields, in particular those which are associated with electric currents of upper atmospheric origin, on the other. Geoelectricity and geomagnetism were not always considered as be longing to quite different fields of geophysics. On the contrary, they were re cognized by the physicists of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century as two manifestations of one and the same physical phenomenon, which we pre sently refer to as electromagnetic fields. This can still be visualized from the choice of names of scientific journals. For instance, there still exists the Japanese Journal of Geomagnetism and Geoelectricity, and the former name of the present American Journal of Geophysical Research was Terrestrial Magnetism and Atmospheric Electricity. Whereas geomagnetism became the root of modern magnetospheric phys ics culminating in the space age exploration of the earth's environment, geo electricity evolved as a step-child of meteorology. The reason for this is clear. The atmospheric electric field observed on the ground reflects merely the local weather with all its frustrating unpredictability. The variable part of the geomagnetic field, however, is a useful indicator of ionospheric and magneto spheric electric current systems.
Book Synopsis Ionospheric Multi-Spacecraft Analysis Tools by : Malcolm Wray Dunlop
Download or read book Ionospheric Multi-Spacecraft Analysis Tools written by Malcolm Wray Dunlop and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-10-29 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book provides a comprehensive toolbox of analysis techniques for ionospheric multi-satellite missions. The immediate need for this volume was motivated by the ongoing ESA Swarm satellite mission, but the tools that are described are general and can be used for any future ionospheric multi-satellite mission with comparable instrumentation. In addition to researching the immediate plasma environment and its coupling to other regions, such a mission aims to study the Earth’s main magnetic field and its anomalies caused by core, mantle, or crustal sources. The parameters for carrying out this kind of work are examined in these chapters. Besides currents, electric fields, and plasma convection, these parameters include ionospheric conductance, Joule heating, neutral gas densities, and neutral winds.
