Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written in nontechnical terms, Big Business and the Wealth of Nations explains how the dynamics of big business have influenced national and international economies in the twentieth century. A path-breaking study, it provides the first systematic treatment of big business in advanced, emerging, and centrally planned economies from the late nineteenth century, when big businesses first appeared in American and West European manufacturing, to the present. These essays, written by internationally known historians and economists, help one to understand the essential role and functions of big businesses, past and present.

Book excerpt: Did fascism have a significant following in France in the 1930s? Were its supporters predominantly from the political right or left? This provocative book, in conjunction with its acclaimed predecessor, French Fascism: The First Wave, demolishes the notion that fascism never took hold in France. Robert Soucy argues that France has a long-standing fascist tradition, one that arose, he argues, more from counterrevolutionary forces on the right than from forces on the left. Analyzing fascist "double-talk," Soucy underscores the social and economic conservatism of such mass movements as Francisme, the Solidarit Franaise, the Parti Populaire Franais, and the Croix de Feu--as well as the ideological and membership crossovers between them. Examining police reports of the era, he penetrates beneath the "socialist" rhetoric of these movements and describes their financial backing from the steel and electricity industries and the middle- and lower-middle-class constituencies (rather than workers) who provided most of their recruits. Soucy investigates why thousands of French men and women found fascist ideas attractive during this period and what fueled the more authoritarian and brutal aspects of French fascism. According to Soucy, these tendencies (seen most recently in the right-wing activity of Jean-Marie Le Pen's National Front) periodically emerge from perceived threats from "alien" elements in French society--whether they be Communists, Socialists, immigrants, Jews, feminists, hedonists, democrats, or liberals "soft" on Marxism and secularism.

Book excerpt: This book focuses on a variety of themes concerning the relationship between financial systems in a broader sense and firms’ growth in historical perspective in some European countries. Financial systems are nowadays largely acknowledged to be a crucial element in determining economic growth. In modern economies, they play a key role by mobilizing savings, pricing risks and allocating capital to firms. Following a consolidated taxonomy focusing on the historical perspective, countries have been conventionally divided into bank-oriented (Continental Europe countries and Japan) and market-oriented systems (Anglo-Saxon countries). The chapters in this book present case studies on Belgium, Great Britain, France and Italy and show that financial systems do not trigger growth processes and industrialization, but they are essential to sustain them over time. Each society has the financial system that fits with its historical trajectory, without any being better or worse than others. The important thing is to have a financial system that is sophisticated and stable, and that evolves according to the demand forces of the moment. History matters. Bank-Industry versus Stock Market-Industry Relationships will be a beneficial read for students interested in economics and business history. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Business History.
