Book Synopsis Development of an AC-powered Atmospheric-pressure, Flowing Microplasma for Gas-phase Nanoparticle Synthesis by : I-Min Huang

This book was released on 2015 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present an alternating current (AC)-powered atmospheric-pressure microplasma for gas-phase synthesis of nanoparticles. The microplasma is formed inside a quartz tube with a powered copper ring electrode on the outside and a tungsten wire on the inside, in contact with the plasma. The electrical properties of the plasma including the voltage and current waveforms are characterized as a function of input power. The plasma length is found to increase with increasing power, reaching a maximum of 4.3 cm at a peak-to-peak voltage of 4 kV. As proof-of-concept, we demonstrate the synthesis of nickel nanoparticles from nickelocene vapor. The particles are monitored in real time by aerosol mobility measurements. Particle size distributions are obtained as a function of nickelocene vapor concentration and input power. Increasing the nickelocene concentration is found to increase the mean diameter and produce a broader range of particle sizes. Interestingly, at higher powers and longer plasma lengths, the particle diameter is found to decrease. Finally, we show that this design allows arrays of microplasmas to be formed with a single power supply and mass flow controller, offering a potential route to scaling up nanoparticle synthesis.

Download or read book Gas Phase Nanoparticle Synthesis written by Claes Granqvist and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2004-12-10 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with gas-phase nanoparticle synthesis and is intended for researchers and research students in nanomaterials science and engineering, condensed matter physics and chemistry, and aerosol science. Gas-phase nanoparticle synthesis is instrumental to nanotechnology—a field in current focus that raises hopes for environmentally benign, resource-lean manufacturing. Nanoparticles can be produced by many physical, chemical, and even biological routes. Gas-phase synthesis is particularly interesting since one can achieve accurate manufacturing control and hence industrial viability. Nanotechnology is popular today. However, basic scientific aspects of the relevant, underlying processes have not received sufficient attention. This book fills the gap in the current literature by addressing certain fundamentals of gas-phase nanoparticle synthesis. Chapters cover topics such as forces within and dynamics of nanoparticle systems, gas evaporation and deposition, laser assisted nanoparticle synthesis, and nanoparticle fabrication via flame processes. A chapter on in-situ structural studies of nanoparticles undergoing growth complements the exposition.

Nanoparticle technology plays an important role in the implementation of nanotechnology in many engineering and industrial fields including electronic devices, advanced ceramics, new batteries, engineered catalysts, functional paint and ink, Drug Delivery System, biotechnology, etc.; and makes use of the unique properties of the nanoparticles which are completely different from those of the bulk materials. This new handbook is the first to explain complete aspects of nanoparticles with many application examples showing their advantages and advanced development. There are handbooks which briefly mention the nanosized particles or their related applications, but no handbook describing the complete aspects of nanoparticles has been published so far. The handbook elucidates of the basic properties of nanoparticles and various nanostructural materials with their characterisation methods in the first part. It also introduces more than 40 examples of practical and potential uses of nanoparticles in the later part dealing with applications. It is intended to give readers a clear picture of nanoparticles as well as new ideas or hints on their applications to create new materials or to improve the performance of the advanced functional materials developed with the nanoparticles. * Introduces all aspects of nanoparticle technology, from the fundamentals to applications. * Includes basic information on the preparation through to the characterization of nanoparticles from various viewpoints * Includes information on nanostructures, which play an important role in practical applications.
