It describes the safety concepts and requirements as found in the international IEC and European harmonized standards. It provides ways and means to improve product design so as to ensure reasonable compliance when a product is subject to safety evaluation by a test laboratory as a part of CE marking process. Its goal is to give equipment designers and manufacturers a better understanding of European and international safety considerations, including the safety philosophy. The information is generally applicable to most product types such as information technology equipment (ITE), test and measurement devices, appliances, machinery, and other similar equipment. It also includes the procedure of risk assessment which is a mandatory part of the safety compliance process as per the new version of LVD

Book excerpt: Electrical Product Safety: A Step-by-Step Guide to LVD Self Assessment provides a step-by-step approach to meeting the LVD and reducing safety approval costs. It is a practical and easy to follow guide aimed at helping manufacturers of electrical products, and in particular small and medium sized businesses to understand the requirements of the LV regulations, understand the basic safety principles, self assess their products and create customised safety reports. The guide is presented in four parts: the first part examines the regulations, their enforcement and the concept of due diligence; the second and most detailed part takes the reader through the process of product self evaluation and report compilation; part three deals with the documentation, i.e. how to compile a technical file and how to prepare a declaration of conformity; finally part four explains how to set up factory and production control systems. Electrical Product Safety has been written by a Trading Standards Office (D. Holland) and an experienced Safety Approvals Engineer (J. Tzimenakis). A complete, practical guide to meeting core EU legal requirements Designed for easy application by small and medium companies, not just large technical teams Expertise of an author who has set up a similar system at Sony, and supplies supporting software

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Clear, Comprehensive Introduction to Standards in the Engineering Professions Standards supplement the design process by guiding the designer toward consistency, safety, and reliability. As daily life involves increasingly complex and sophisticated instruments, standards become indispensable engineering tools to ensure user safety and product quality. Primer on Engineering Standards: Expanded Textbook Edition delves into standards creation and compliance to provide students and engineers with a comprehensive reference. The different types of standards are dissected and discussed in terms of development, value, impact, interpretation, and compliance, and options are provided for situations where conformance is not possible. The process of standards creation is emphasized in terms of essential characteristics and common pitfalls to avoid, with detailed guidance on how, where, and with whom one may get involved in official development. Organized for both quick reference and textbook study, this new Expanded Textbook Edition provides a quick, clear understanding of critical concepts, ramifications, and implications as it: Introduces the concepts, history, and classification of standards, rules, and regulations Discusses the federal, state, and local government’s role in standards development and enforcement Distinguishes voluntary consensus standards, limited consensus standards, and jurisdictional versus non-jurisdictional government standards Covers the need for and process of exemptions to existing standards Examines the characteristics of a good standard, and discusses opportunities for involvement in development Includes case studies to demonstrate standards applications, and extensive appendices to direct further inquiry The successful design, fabrication, and operation of any product relies on foundational understanding of pertinent standards; indeed, standards and guidelines form a central pillar of the engineering profession. This helpful resource goes beyond a list of rules to help students and practitioners gain a better understanding of the creation, import, and use of standards.

Book excerpt: Electric power engineering education traditionally covers safety of the power equipment and systems. Little attention, if any, is given to the safety of people. When they reach professional status, most power engineers are not familiar with electric safety issues such as practices governing site works or grounding techniques of dwellings, hospitals, and factories. Designed for both electrical engineering student and practicing power engineers, Electric Safety: Practice and Standards provides the knowledge and analysis they need to be well versed in electric safety. Features: Includes techniques to assess safety practices at worksites and provides remedies to correct safety problems Addresses the elusive stray voltage problem and provides techniques to mitigate its impact in dwellings as well as in sensitive installations such as hospitals and dairy farms Provides approximate, yet accurate, analyses and techniques that can be used to assess electric safety without the need for extensive computation or elaborate programs Includes several case studies from real events and examples demonstrating how variations in electric safety procedure implementation influence safety levels Based on the authors’ years of experience as an expert witness and electric safety training instructor, the book covers the analysis of electric safety practices as well as the interpretations of various safety codes. Including homework problems and a solutions manual, this book is a comprehensive guide to recognize and eliminate hazards of electric shocks for professionals working on electric power equipment, as well as people such as the general public in commonly used places, farms workers and animals, and hospital patients.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to facilitate and improve development work related to all documents and information required by functional safety standards. Proof of Compliance (PoC) is important for the assessor and certification bodies when called up to confirm that the manufacturer has developed a software system according to the required safety standards. While PoC documents add functionality to the product neither for the developer nor for the customer, they do add confidence and trust to the product and ease certification, and as such are important for the product’s value. In spite of this added value, the documentation needed for PoC is often developed late in the project and in a haphazard manner. This book aims at developers, assessors, certification bodies, and purchasers of safety instrumented systems and informs the reader about the most important PoC documents. A typical PoC documentation encompasses 50 to 200 documents, several of which are named in the safety standards (e.g., 82 documents in IEC 61508:2010 series, 101 documents in EN 5012X series and 106 work products in ISO 26262:2018 series). These documents also include further references, typically one to twenty of them, and the total number of pages developed by the manufacturer varies between 2000 and 10000 pages. The book provides guidance and examples what to include in the relevant plans and documents.
