Book excerpt: Linear Network Theory presents the problems of linear network analysis and synthesis. This book discusses the theory of linear electrical circuits, which is important for developing the scientific outlook of specialists in radio and electrical engineering. Organized into 13 chapters, this book begins with an overview of circuit theory that operates with electrical quantities, including voltage, charge, and current. This text then examines sinusoidal function as the predominant form of a periodic process in electrical circuits. Other chapters consider the reduction of a series–parallel network to single equivalent impedance, which is one of the main forms of converting circuit diagrams often used in practice. The final chapter deals with the Laplace transformation or operational calculus, which is a combination of methods of mathematical analysis. This book is intended to be suitable for students in the specialized branches of electrical and radio engineering, post-graduates, and engineers extending their theoretical knowledge.

Book excerpt: Electrical Networks focuses on the principles, methodologies, practices, and approaches involved in electrical networks, including transformers, polarity, Zobel networks, and Fourier series. The book first elaborates on d.c. currents and voltages and varying currents and voltages. Discussions focus on voltage and current sources, energy and power, voltage and current division, star-delta transformation, direction and polarity, periodical quantities, capacitors and inductors, and energy stored in capacitors and inductors. The manuscript then takes a look at some properties of networks and magnetic coupled inductors. Topics include equivalent circuits for magnetic coupled coils, voltage and the current transformer, mutual induction, impedance transformation, current direction, voltage polarity and the mode of winding, polar diagrams, resonance, and Zobel networks. The publication examines networks containing switches, complex frequency, and Fourier series. Considerations include frequency spectrum, finite Fourier series, capacitor discharges over a resistor, natural oscillations, and discontinuity. The monograph is a valuable source of information for electricians and researchers interested in electrical networks.

The topics of this book The concept of a matroid has been known for more than five decades. Whitney (1935) introduced it as a common generalization of graphs and matrices. In the last two decades, it has become clear how important the concept is, for the following reasons: (1) Combinatorics (or discrete mathematics) was considered by many to be a collection of interesting, sometimes deep, but mostly unrelated ideas. However, like other branches of mathematics, combinatorics also encompasses some gen eral tools that can be learned and then applied, to various problems. Matroid theory is one of these tools. (2) Within combinatorics, the relative importance of algorithms has in creased with the spread of computers. Classical analysis did not even consider problems where "only" a finite number of cases were to be studied. Now such problems are not only considered, but their complexity is often analyzed in con siderable detail. Some questions of this type (for example, the determination of when the so called "greedy" algorithm is optimal) cannot even be answered without matroidal tools.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whatever the field of human activity-domestic or scientific, work or leisure-it is likely that some knowledge of the behaviour of electrical circuits is required to keep the processes moving, the wheels turning. In many cases, a knowledge of Ohm's law may suffice. In others, an understanding of more complex relationships may be necessary. In this book an attempt is made to provide, in a concise manner, an introduction to the main methods of treating electrical networks, whether they be carrying direct (de) or alternating (ac) electrical currents. Clearly, the range of possible circuits is vast so that the simplifications which are demonstrated in the pages that follow are of great importance to the student. However, to gain the fullest benefit from such a concise presentation, the student must devote some time to the exercises which are provided in Appendix B. The units used throughout the book are those of the International System (or SI). The various quantities which are introduced-such as current and potential and resistance-are summarized in Appendix A together with the symbols used to represent them, the unit associated with each quantity and the formula used to derive that unit from four fundamental or MKSA units.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a strong case for electrical network topologists and submodular function theorists being aware of each other's fields. Presenting a topological approach to electrical network theory, this book demonstrates the strong links that exist between submodular functions and electrical networks. The book contains: . a detailed discussion of graphs, matroids, vector spaces and the algebra of generalized minors, relevant to network analysis (particularly to the construction of efficient circuit simulators) . a detailed discussion of submodular function theory in its own right; topics covered include, various operations, dualization, convolution and Dilworth truncation as well as the related notions of prinicpal partition and principal lattice of partitions. In order to make the book useful to a wide audience, the material on electrical networks and that on submodular functions is presented independently of each other. The hybrid rank problem, the bridge between (topological) electrical network theory and submodular functions, is covered in the final chapter. The emphasis in the book is on low complexity algorithms, particularly based on bipartite graphs. The book is intended for self-study and is recommended to designers of VLSI algorithms. More than 300 problems, almost all of them with solutions, are included at the end of each chapter.

It builds a thorough and rigorous understanding of the analysis techniques of electric networks, and also explains the essential procedures involved in the synthesis of passive networks. Written specifically to meet the needs of undergraduate students of electrical and electronics engineering, electronics and communication engineering, instru-mentation and control engineering, and computer science and engineering, the book provides modularized coverage of the full spectrum of network theory suitable for a one-semester course. A balanced emphasis on conceptual understanding and problem-solving helps students master the basic principles and properties that govern circuit behaviour. A large number of solved examples show students the step-by-step processes for applying the techniques presented in the text. A variety of exercises with answers at the chapter ends allow students to practice the solution methods. Besides students pursuing courses in engineering, the book is also suitable for self-study by those preparing for AMIE and competitive examinations. An objective-type question bank at the end of book is designed to see how well the students have mastered the material presented in the text.

Book excerpt: We introduce the theory of chemical reaction networks and their relation to stochastic Petri nets — important ways of modeling population biology and many other fields. We explain how techniques from quantum mechanics can be used to study these models. This relies on a profound and still mysterious analogy between quantum theory and probability theory, which we explore in detail. We also give a tour of key results concerning chemical reaction networks and Petri nets.
