Book excerpt: Carbon nanotube (CNT) is a hollow structure consisted by one-atom-thick sheet of carbon atoms, which can be considered as a rolled-up graphene sheet. The diameter and rolling angle (chirality) uniquely determines its electronic structure. Over two decades of study, due to the difficulty of synthesizing clean individual CNTs and the limitation of accurate chirality characterization, there are still unveiled questions towards the intrinsic properties of this 1-D material at single molecular level. In this thesis, I will discuss the approaches of fabricating chirality assigned CNT device and the experimental results of its optical and electrical properties. In the first part, I describe using 'fast heating' chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method to achieve the high quality suspended CNT growth. Combining Rayleigh and Raman spectroscopy, I demonstrate the accurate assignment of chirality for each suspended individual CNT. With the ability of chirality identification, a series of optical and electrical experiments were conducted on the selected CNTs of interest.

CNTs are quasi-one-dimensional materials which can be used to study fundamental quantum effects of one- dimensional systems. TherehasbeenagreatdealofinterestspecificallyinsemiconductingCNTs, which have shown to be promising candidates as the building blocks for the next-generation electronic applications. Carbon nanotube electronic devices have the potential to replace conventional silicon-based counterparts. How- ever, there are still obstacles that remain with regard to the scientific study or application oriented researches. For example, the growth orientation and the band gaps of individual CNTs are difficult to control. In addition, pronounced low-frequency current fluctuation, 1/f noise, exists. The measured noise levelisevencomparabletothesignallevelundersomecircumstances, therebylimit- ing the application of CNTs in low-signal electronics and the overall reliability of CNT based devices. In this thesis, single-walled CNTs (SWNTs) were chosen as a studying modelduetotheirsimplicityinnature. DifferentmethodsofindividualSWNT fieldeffecttransistor(FET)fabricationmethodswerecompared. Themethods included: (I) Directed growth of ultra long SWNTs on a wafer by CVD using ethanol, and (II) Dispersing the SWNTs fabricated by ordinary CVD, on the wafer with organic solvents. The noise behavior for both fabrication methods were characterized by DAQ and lock-in noise measurement methods. Thereafter, thebasicI-V measurementsoffabricatedSWNTFETdevices were also performed. The hysteresis effect and its time dependent measure- ments in FETs were illustrated. The measurements results suggested that the hysteresis effect in nanotube devices was attributed to the charge traps in the oxide layer of FETs. Finally, the 1/f noise of SWNT FETs was studied. It was shown that the 1/f noise arose from the carrier number fluctuations rather than mobility fluctuations, as a superposition of Lorentzian fluctuation spectra. The corre- -2 sponding Hooge constant was found to be gate dependent and about 10 in thelinearregime. Bycomparingwiththereportedsimulationresultofrandom telegraphsignal(RTS)noiseamplitudeinsubthresholdregime, itwasproposed that such Lorentzian fluctuation spectra were due to the RTS noise, arising from the gate potential fluctuations in the CNT, and the charge exchange be- tween CNT and oxide layer. These potential fluctuations were attributed to trapped charges in the oxide nearby which changed the number of carriers in the CNTs. Book excerpt: Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are tubular carbon-based nanostructures that can be envisioned as graphene rolled up into a seamless cylinder. They are an ideal candidate for use in various electronic and optoelectronic applications due to their unique properties such as high carrier mobility, high light absorption, mechanical flexibility, and solution processability that enable large area, and low cost electronics. Some of the applications include circuits, RFID tags, photodetectors, electronic paper, and robotic systems with skin-like sensing capabilities. To enable these exciting applications, characterization, optimization of device performance, and novel device concepts with properties tailored to specific applications are critical. There are generally two different ways of using SWNTs in electronic devices: 1) as active semiconducting material (in devices like transistors, photodetectors etc.) and 2) as metallic electrodes (as interconnects, electrodes in stretchable tactile sensors etc.). In Chapter I, we will review the recent progress of using SWNTs in both of these applications. Chapter I should equip the reader with a background and understanding of current trends and future outlook of SWNT-based electronics. In Chapter II and Chapter III, we will discuss a novel technique to generate electrical contacts to individual SWNTs, known as dip-pen nanolithography, to characterize their electrical properties. Characterization of electrical properties of individual SWNTs is critical to the understanding of their behavior in large-scale systems. In Chapter II, we will emphasize on the methods and insights to fabricating high quality electrodes with uniform dimensions and functionality. In Chapter III, we will focus on the electrical characterization of individual SWNTs using DPN-fabricated short-channel transistors. Here, we will use our short-channel devices to statistically quantify the percentage of semiconducting versus metallic SWNTs of a solution sorting system, along with critical device parameters such as on-conductance, on/off ratio, and threshold voltage. In Chapter IV, we will move onto discussing large-scale, SWNT film-based transistors. Here, we will introduce a novel technique known as solution shearing to densely align SWNTs over a large area. We will compare aligned SWNT versus randomly oriented SWNTs to elucidate how dense packing and alignment affects the electrical properties of SWNT films. In Chapter V, we will present a hybrid film of SWNT and fullerene as highly sensitive infrared photodetectors. Here, we will discuss how sensitivity can be enhanced using various parameters, and how it can potentially be used in various application such as flexible infrared imaging devices. Finally, in Chapter VI, we will present a stretchable energy harvesting electronic skin device, where SWNTs were used as stretchable electrodes. Here, we will discuss the key concepts in enhancing pressure sensitivity, how to differentiate between different tactile information, and how energy can efficiently be harvested to generate electrical power. Each chapter will conclude with a brief summary, and will discuss the challenges that need to be met to fully realize the potential of SWNTs. This thesis should not only provide new insights to enhancing device performance, but should also excite the reader on the promising outlook of SWNT-based electronics, and motivate them to pursue them.

Book excerpt: In this thesis, chemiresistive devices for the detection of volatile organic compounds to include chemical warfare agents are developed. Active sensing materials were produced by crafting composites of synthetic polymers and single walled carbon nanotubes. Sensitivity to and selectivity for target analytes were augmented by the introduction of molecular recognition elements into polymer side chains or by the addition of additives into a polymer/single walled nanotube composite. Additionally, methods to create n-type single walled carbon nanotubes through covalent side wall functionalization were explored. Chapter 1: Chemiresistive sensors are becoming increasingly important as they offer an inexpensive option to conventional analytical instrumentation, they can be readily integrated into electronic devices, and they have low power requirements. Nanowires (NWs) are a major theme in chemosensor development. High surface area, inter-wire junctions, and restricted conduction pathways give intrinsically high sensitivity and new mechanisms to transduce binding or action of analytes. This chapter details the status of NW chemosensors with selected examples from the literature. We begin by proposing a framework for understanding electrical transport and transduction mechanisms in NW sensors. Next, we offer the reader a review of device performance parameters. Then, we consider the different NW types followed by a summary of NW assembly and different device platform architectures. Subsequently, we discuss NW functionalization strategies. Finally, we propose a roadmap for future developments in NW sensing that addresses selectivity, sensor drift, sensitivity, response analysis, and emerging applications. The NW field is still in its infancy, and continuing advances present abundant opportunities. Chapter 2: Chemical warfare agents (CWA) continue to present a threat to civilian populations and military personnel in operational areas all over the world. Reliable measurements of CWAs are critical to contamination detection, avoidance, and remediation. The current deployed systems in United States and foreign militaries, as well as those in the private sector offer accurate detection of CWAs, but are still limited by size, portability and fabrication cost. Herein, we report a chemiresistive CWA sensor using single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) wrapped with poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) derivatives. We demonstrate that a pendant hexafluoroisopropanol group on the polymer that enhances sensitivity to a nerve agent mimic, dimethyl methylphosphonate, in both nitrogen and air environments to concentrations as low as 5 ppm and 11 ppm, respectively. Additionally, these PEDOT/SWCNT derivative sensor systems experience negligible device performance over the course of two weeks under ambient conditions. Chapter 3: The detection of alkylating agents using carbon nanotube chemiresistive devices has confounded researchers in the sensor field for quite some time. In this work, we address this quandary by fabricating a chemiresistive device consisting of poly(4-vinylpyridine)/single walled carbon nanotube/lithium bromide composites that is able to detect gaseous ethylene oxide (EtO) and a mustard agent simulant, 2-chloroethyl ethylsulfide (CEES). Our devices were sensitive to EtO and CEES down to 1048 ppm and 33 ppm, respectively. We calculated theoretical detection limits of 212 ppm for EtO and 10 ppm for CEES. These results should encourage researchers in the field to tackle analytes once thought to be undetectable via carbon nanotube chemiresistive devices, as they offer a low cost and low power alternative to current options. Chapter 4: The covalent functionalization and characterization of single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) by dihalocarbenes and the trifluoromethylating Togni's reagent is explored in this chapter. Covalent functionalization reactions were performed to increase the SWCNT solubility, imparting n-type semiconducting behavior while maintaining the native conductivity of the conjugated sp2 network. Previous computational studies predicted the conservation of the electrical conductivity of SWCNTS after carbene additions, but experimental work to verify the electrical properties has not been performed. In the studies presented herein, we utilized five different covalent functionalization methods to modify SWCNTs and utilized X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) in tandem with Resonance Raman spectroscopy to characterize our products. Though electrical characterization was not performed, we improved upon literature methods concerning the dichlorocarbene addition of -CCl2 groups to pristine SWCNTs.
