Book excerpt: Electoral laws in India have many loopholes. Unfortunately, over the years, India's various governments have not been serious in addressing electoral reforms. There certainly have been improvements, with India's Election Commission taking some major initiatives in bringing about changes, such as the introduction of electronic voting machines and providing every voter with a voter identity card. But larger issues merit serious attention. It is time that proactive steps are taken by the government so that the people not only get a chance to vote, but also get to vote for the right people who will represent them. This book analyzes and charts the possibilities for electoral reform. It scrutinizes the validity of various recent discourses on electoral reforms and establishes, on the one hand, a dialectical re(-)visioning of the institution of the Election Commission and the process through which it validates existence, and on the other, striving to link aspects of the Commission, the office of the Chief Election Commissioner, and electoral reforms. Along with recommend solutions, the book cites examples from countries such as Germany, Japan, and China.

Book excerpt: The elections and political parties are necessary ingredients of democratic governance. Elections are a necessary condition of representative democracy. In representative democracy citizens participate in politics primarily by choosing political authorities in competitive elections. Elections, hence, are a necessary and crucial instrument to make democracy work. In India, free and fair elections are held at regular intervals as per guidelines of the constitution and the Election Commission. To make them free of flaws it is essential to reform them from time to time. Electoral reform means introducing fair electoral systems for conducting fair elections. It also rejuvenates the existing systems to enhance and increase the efficiency of the same. Following the demands of electoral reforms several committees were being set up. Some of the measures like reduction of voting age and anti-defection law are appreciable but there are other vital areas in election field completely neglected. This paper will evaluate about different attempts made for electoral reforms in India. Different challenges before the Election Commission are also been discussed, also how it can be made effective as suggested by Commission in India will be presented. A comparative analysis with other democratic countries like U.S.A and U.K. is added to it.

Book Synopsis The Politics of Electoral Reform by : Alan Renwick
Download or read book The Politics of Electoral Reform written by Alan Renwick and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-02-04 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elections lie at the heart of democracy, and this book seeks to understand how the rules governing those elections are chosen. Drawing on both broad comparisons and detailed case studies, it focuses upon the electoral rules that govern what sorts of preferences voters can express and how votes translate into seats in a legislature. Through detailed examination of electoral reform politics in four countries (France, Italy, Japan, and New Zealand), Alan Renwick shows how major electoral system changes in established democracies occur through two contrasting types of reform process. Renwick rejects the simple view that electoral systems always straightforwardly reflect the interests of the politicians in power. Politicians' motivations are complex; politicians are sometimes unable to pursue reforms they want; occasionally, they are forced to accept reforms they oppose. The Politics of Electoral Reform shows how voters and reform activists can have real power over electoral reform.

Book Synopsis Election Commission of India by : Ujjwal Kumar Singh
Download or read book Election Commission of India written by Ujjwal Kumar Singh and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-08-09 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the constitutional body that conducts elections, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has emerged as a trusted institution within the shared space of democracy in India. This process has, however, been a fraught one because of contestation over the ECI’s constitutional responsibility and the power of Parliament to make laws to govern electoral matters. This comprehensive monograph discusses the history of the ECI through a study of the measures it has adopted to ensure certainty of procedures in order to maintain the democratic uncertainty of electoral outcome. In this context, innovations such as the Model Code of Conduct have enhanced the rule-making powers of the ECI. Going beyond the ECI’s design and performance framework, Singh and Roy argue that changes in the nature of electoral contests and domination of political regimes have made the task of preserving electoral integrity and assuring its deliberative content a challenging one.
