Book Synopsis Elasto-Plastic Fracture Characterization of Paving Materials at Low Temperatures by : K. Mahboub

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A methodology for characterization of low-temperature fracture behavior of paving mixtures is presented. The critical elasto-plastic energy release rate, the JIc parameter, is adopted as the fracture criterion. The methodology permits the study of fracture in plasticized sulfur (Sulphlex) and asphaltic paving mixtures. To accommodate special fracture characteristics of pavement materials, certain modifications to the standard ASTM fracture testing procedures are proposed. The rationale for these modifications is also discussed. Approximate values of KIc, KQ, are correlated to the JQ measurements, which are a provisional representation of JIc, and results are compared with theoretical predictions. Tearing modulus is also investigated. The overall results of this study indicate that the JQ parameter can be effectively utilized for characterization of thermal cracking susceptibility of pavement materials.
Book Synopsis Long and Deep Tunnels by : Vittorio Guglielmetti

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design and construction of “long and deep” tunnels, i.e. tunnels under mountains, characterised by either considerable length and/or overburden, represent a considerable challenge. The scope of this book is not to instruct how to design and construct such tunnels but to share a method to identify the potential hazards related to the process of designing and constructing long and deep tunnels, to produce a relevant comprehensive analysis and listing, to quantify the probability and consequences, and to design proper mitigation measures and countermeasures. The design, developed using probabilistic methods, is verified during execution by means of the so called Plan for Advance of the Tunnel (PAT) method, which allows adapting the design and control parameters of the future stretches of the tunnel to the results of the stretches already finished, using the monitoring data base. Numerous criteria are given to identify the key parameters, necessary for the PAT procedure. Best practices of excavation management with the help of real time monitoring and control are also provided. Furthermore cost and time evaluation systems are analysed. Finally, contractual aspects related to construction by contract are investigated, for best development and application of models more appropriate for tunnelling-construction contracts. The work will be of interest to practising engineers, designers, consultants and students in mining, underground, tunnelling, transportation and construction engineering, as well as to foundation and geological engineers, urban planners/developers and architects.

Book Synopsis Rate- and Temperature-Dependent Fracture Characteristics of Asphaltic Paving Mixtures by : Soohyok Im

This book was released on 2013 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cracking in asphaltic pavement layers causes primary failure of the roadway structure, and the fracture resistance and characteristics of asphalt mixtures significantly influence the service life of asphaltic roadways. A better understanding of the fracture process is considered a necessary step to the proper development of design-analysis procedures for asphaltic mixtures and pavement structures. However, such effort involves many challenges because of the complex nature of asphaltic materials. In this study, experiments were conducted using uniaxial compressive specimens to characterize the linear viscoelastic properties and semi-circular bending (SCB) specimens to characterize fracture behavior of a typical dense-graded asphalt paving mixture subjected to various loading rates and at different temperatures. The SCB fracture test was also incorporated with a digital image correlation (DIC) system and finite-element model simulations including material viscoelasticity and cohesive-zone fracture to effectively capture local fracture processes and resulting fracture properties. The test results and model simulations clearly demonstrate that: (1) the rate- and temperature-dependent fracture characteristics need to be identified at the local fracture process zone, and (2) the rate- and temperature-dependent fracture properties are necessary in the structural design of asphaltic pavements with which a wide range of strain rates and service temperatures is usually associated.

Book Synopsis On the Determination of Elastic-Plastic Fracture Material Parameters by : JG. Blauel
Download or read book On the Determination of Elastic-Plastic Fracture Material Parameters written by JG. Blauel and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: J-initiation values and J-resistance curves are the most promising candidates for the characterization of fracture resistance of materials used in the transition and upper shelf toughness region. Though their use for prediction of initiation of crack growth and of ductile tearing instability was successfully demonstrated in evaluations of large-scale tests, there still remain several problems concerning the determination of initiation values and generation of J-resistance curves. This paper reports on results of investigations conducted on different materials with different specimen types. It covers the comparison of different methods for initiation detection and J-resistance curve determination and the influence of side grooves and specimen dimensions. For both the measurement of J-initiation values Ji and J resistance JR, the DC potential drop technique, the partial unloading compliance technique, and the multiple specimen interrupted loading procedure were used on compact specimens with dimensions ranging from B = 12 5 to 100 mm. The tests were carried out in a temperature range of 25 to 600°C (77 to 1112°F). The generated J-resistance curves agree very well, but slightly different values of crack initiation were determined. The definition of initiation of crack growth is discussed.
