Book excerpt: Elastic scattering of low (10-50 eV) kinetic energy electrons from free diatomic molecules is studied using a single-center expansion of the full molecular potential. Dynamic exchange and polarization are included in a local form. The calculated elastic differential scattering cross-sections (DCS) for electron impact on CO and N2 are in good agreement with available experimental data. The importance of using the full molecular potential instead of a two-center potential approach is pointed out. These corrections are small for energies above 50 eV, but they become increasingly important at lower energies. When discussing the angular distributions of elastically-scattered electrons from oriented molecules (like surface adsorbates), we show that these corrections are particularly significant. The results have implications for other electron scattering problems such as those encountered in low-energy photoelectron diffraction from both core and valence levels.

To understand anything about a physical system you have to interact with it and one of the best ways to learn something is to use electrons as probes. This book is the result of a meeting, which took place in Magdalene College Cambridge in December 2001. Atomic, nuclear, cluster, soHd state, chemical and even bio- physicists got together to consider scattering electrons to explore matter in all its forms. Theory and experiment were represented in about equal measure. It was meeting marked by the most lively of discussions and the free exchange of ideas. We all learnt a lot. The Editors are grateful to EPSRC through its Collaborative Computational Project program (CCP2), lOPP, the Division of Atomic, Molecular, Optical and Plasma Physics (DAMOPP) and the Atomic Molecular Interactions group (AMIG) of the Institute of Physics for financial support. The smooth running of the meeting was enormously facilitated by the efficiency and helpfulness of the staff of Magdalene College, for which we are extremely grateful. This meeting marked the end for one of us (CTW) of a ten-year period as a fellow of the College and he would like to take this opportunity to thank the fellows and staff for the privilege of working with them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of the book is to give a coherent and comprehensive account of quantum scattering theory with applications to atomic, molecular and nuclear systems. The motivation for this is to supply the necessary theoretical tools to calculate scattering observables of these many-body systems. Concepts which are seemingly different for atomic/molecular scattering from those of nuclear systems, are shown to be the same once physical units such as energy and length are diligently clarified. Many-body resonances excited in nuclear systems are the same as those in atomic systems and come under the name of Feshbach resonances. We also lean heavily on semi-classical methods to explain the physics of quantum scattering OCo especially the interference seen in the angle dependence of the cross section. Having in mind a wide readership, the book includes sections on scattering in two dimensions which is of use in surface physics. Several problems are also included at the end of each of the chapters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knowledge of the dynamics of many-electron systems is of fundamental importance to all disciplines of condensed matter physics. A very effective access to electron dynamics is offered by inelastic X-ray scattering (IXS) spectroscopy. The double differential scattering cross section for IXS is directly related to the time-dependent two-particle density correlation function, and, for large momentum and energy transfer (Compton limit) to the electron momentum distribution. Moreover, resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) enables the study of electron dynamics via electronic excitations in a very selective manner (e.g. selectively spin, crystal momentum, or symmetry), so that other methods are efficaciously complemented. The progress of IXS spectroscopy is intimately related to the growing range of applications of synchrotron radiation. The aim of the book is to provide the growing community of researchers with accounts of experimental methods, instrumentation, and data analysis of IXS, with representative examples of successful applications, and with the theoretical framework for interpretations of the measurements.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The investigation of scattering phenomena is a major theme of modern physics. A scattered particle provides a dynamical probe of the target system. The practical problem of interest here is the scattering of a low energy electron by an N-electron atom. It has been difficult in this area of study to achieve theoretical results that are even qualitatively correct, yet quantitative accuracy is often needed as an adjunct to experiment. The present book describes a quantitative theoretical method, or class of methods, that has been applied effectively to this problem. Quantum mechanical theory relevant to the scattering of an electron by an N-electron atom, which may gain or lose energy in the process, is summarized in Chapter 1. The variational theory itself is presented in Chapter 2, both as currently used and in forms that may facilitate future applications. The theory of multichannel resonance and threshold effects, which provide a rich structure to observed electron-atom scattering data, is presented in Chapter 3. Practical details of the computational implementation of the variational theory are given in Chapter 4. Chapters 5 and 6 summarize recent appli cations of the variational theory to problems of experimental interest, with many examples of the successful interpretation of complex structural fea tures observed in scattering experiments, and of the quantitative prediction of details of electron-atom scattering phenomena.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cross sections for elastic scattering of low energy electrons by molecular hydrogen are calculated by solving numerically the continuum Hartree-Fock equations for an electron moving in the potential field of the neutral homonuclear diatomic hydrogen molecule. Hartree-Fock equations make full allowance for electron exchange. The cross sections for elastic scattering of electrons by molecular hydrogen are treated with and without the assumption of electron exchange. The theoretical agreement in the exchange approximation is very good when compared with experimental data, but disappears completely when exchange is neglected. The method of calculation is based on an expansion of the continuum orbitals up to fourth order as a product of a series of spherical harmonics and radial wave functions about the molecular midpoint of the molecule. The potential field of the incident electron caused by the nuclei of the neutral molecule is expanded in spherical harmonics up to the eighth order. The continuum orbitals are substituted into the Hartree-Fock equations, integration is performed over angular coordinates, and the resulting infinite set of coupled differential-integral equations is truncated and solved numerically to a self-consistent solution by an iterative technique for three radial continuum functions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A simple model is proposed for the calculation of free-electron wave functions for low-energy electrons incident upon neutral atoms. The region of interaction of the electron with the atom may be separated into three regions, according to the importance of potential: Coulomb plus exchange; Coulomb; and far-field induced polarization. The division of regions is based on mathematical and physical reasons for the characteristic behavior of wave functions in the scattering problem. Examples are given for the elastic scattering of electrons from nitrogen, oxygen and argon. The agreement with experiment and effective-range theory is good. The application of the method to prediction of low-energy electron scattering from homonuclear diatomic molecules is discussed. (Author).

Book excerpt: The proceedings provide a topical survey of the static and dynamical magnetic properties of condensed matter studied by neutron scattering which has been the key technique in this field for a long time. The static aspects deal with the determination of long-range ordered spin structures and magnetization densities. The dynamic aspects concentrate on the determination of magnetic excitations such as spin waves and crystal-field transitions. The use of polarized-neutron techniques is particularly emphasized. All these topics are thoroughly introduced, methodically discussed, and highlighted with recent experimental results obtained for a vast variety of magnetic materials (e.g., strongly correlated electron systems, multilayers, nanocrystals, molecular complexes, etc.) by acknowledged experts. Other experimental methods (x-ray scattering, muon spin rotation) in the study of magnetism are compared to neutron scattering.
