Book excerpt: Cities and Their Vital Systems asks basic questions about the longevity, utility, and nature of urban infrastructures; analyzes how they grow, interact, and change; and asks how, when, and at what cost they should be replaced. Among the topics discussed are problems arising from increasing air travel and airport congestion; the adequacy of water supplies and waste treatment; the impact of new technologies on construction; urban real estate values; and the field of "telematics," the combination of computers and telecommunications that makes money machines and national newspapers possible.
Book Synopsis Rare-earth Iron Permanent Magnets by : J. M. D. Coey
Download or read book Rare-earth Iron Permanent Magnets written by J. M. D. Coey and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rare-earth iron permanent magnets combine the magnetization of iron or cobalt with the anisotropy of a light rare-earth in intermetallic compounds which exhibit nearly ideal hysteresis. The rare-earth iron magnets are indispensable components in a vast range of electronic and electromechanical devices. This book covers the principles of permanent magnetism, magnet processing, and applications in a series of interlocking chapters written by experts in each area. Based on the findings of the Concerted European Action on Magnets, it is a definitive account of the field, designed to be read by physicists, materials scientists, and electrical engineers.

Book Synopsis Neutron Scattering from Magnetic Materials by : Tapan Chatterji
Download or read book Neutron Scattering from Magnetic Materials written by Tapan Chatterji and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2005-11-29 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neutron Scattering from Magnetic Materials is a comprehensive account of the present state of the art in the use of the neutron scattering for the study of magnetic materials. The chapters have been written by well-known researchers who are at the forefront of this field and have contributed directly to the development of the techniques described. Neutron scattering probes magnetic phenomena directly. The generalized magnetic susceptibility, which can be expressed as a function of wave vector and energy, contains all the information there is to know about the statics and dynamics of a magnetic system and this quantity is directly related to the neutron scattering cross section. Polarized neutron scattering techniques raise the sophistication of measurements to even greater levels and gives additional information in many cases. The present book is largely devoted to the application of polarized neutron scattering to the study of magnetic materials. It will be of particular interest to graduate students and researchers who plan to investigate magnetic materials using neutron scattering.· Written by a group of scientist who have contributed directly in developing the techniques described.· A complete treatment of the polarized neutron scattering not available in literature.· Gives practical hits to solve magnetic structure and determine exchange interactions in magnetic solids.· Application of neutron scattering to the study of the novel electronic materials.
Book Synopsis Handbook of Magnetic Materials by : K.H.J. Buschow
Download or read book Handbook of Magnetic Materials written by K.H.J. Buschow and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2003-12-03 with total page 677 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 15 of the Handbook on the Properties of Magnetic Materials, as the preceding volumes, has a dual purpose. As a textbook it is intended to be of assistance to those who wish to be introduced to a given topic in the field of magnetism without the need to read the vast amount of literature published. As a work of reference it is intended for scientists active in magnetism research. To this dual purpose, Volume 15 of the Handbook is composed of topical review articles written by leading authorities. In each of these articles an extensive description is given in graphical as well as in tabular form, much emphasis being placed on the discussion of the experimental material in the framework of physics, chemistry and material science. It provides the readership with novel trends and achievements in magnetism.
Book Synopsis Magnetism and Synchrotron Radiation by : Eric Beaurepaire
Download or read book Magnetism and Synchrotron Radiation written by Eric Beaurepaire and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-03-12 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in the synthesis of new materials with often complex, nano-scaled structures require increasingly sophisticated experimental techniques that can probe the electronic states, the atomic magnetic moments and the magnetic microstructures responsible for the properties of these materials. At the same time, progress in synchrotron radiation techniques has ensured that these light sources remain a key tool of investigation, e.g. synchrotron radiation sources of the third generation are able to support magnetic imaging on a sub-micrometer scale. With the Fifth Mittelwihr School on Magnetism and Synchrotron Radiation the tradition of teaching the state-of-the-art on modern research developments continues and is expressed through the present set of extensive lectures provided in this volume. While primarily aimed at postgraduate students and newcomers to the field, this volume will also benefit researchers and lecturers actively working in the field.

Book Synopsis Electronic States of Inorganic Compounds: New Experimental Techniques by : Peter R. Day
Download or read book Electronic States of Inorganic Compounds: New Experimental Techniques written by Peter R. Day and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last few years a surprisingly large number of new experimental techniques have been devised to probe, often with great subtlety, into the electronic structures of inorganic substances. Thus in favourable cases one now has the opportunity of locating and assigning electronically excited states over a 1 vast energy range stretching from tens of cm- above the ground 1 6 state up to some 10 cm- • The techniques are extremely dis parate in background, involving (among others) linearly and circularly polarised electromagnetic radiation, electron kinetic energy analysis and neutron scattering. Furthermore, practition ers of many of the techniques may not be aware of how the information which they are obtaining overlaps and complements that obtained by other techniques. The time therefore seemed ripe to bring together a group of experts to survey, for an audience of inorganic chemists, the basic theories and experim ental procedures relevant to the different techniques, and the relations between them. In pursuing this aim we were fortunate in having the very generous financial backing of N. A. T. O. , through their Advanced Study Institutes programme, and the present volume records the substance of lectures given at the Institute which took place at the Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory and St. John's College, Oxford, from 8-18 September 1974.
