Book excerpt: La dyslexie est le motif de consultation le plus fréquent dans le cadre des troubles de l'apprentissage dans les cabinets d'orthophonie (Habib & Joly-Pottuz, 2008). Longtemps considérées comme le signe majeur de la dyslexie, les confusions visuelles peuvent cependant être considérées comme un signe associé de la dyslexie (Ramus, 2005). C'est pourquoi il semble important de les évoquer ici car elles peuvent être un signe d'appel non négligeable, puisqu'elles peuvent alors être révélatrices de troubles neurocognitifs (S. Dehaene, 2007). En outre, elles sont d'autant plus pertinentes à analyser qu'elles sont normalement rares voire absentes chez les enfants normo-lecteurs de plus de 8 ans (Van Hout & Estienne, 2003). Le lien avec la latéralité de l'enfant et son développement neurovisuel peut être envisagé afin d'expliquer l'origine de ces confusions visuelles. Pour cela, une étude a été menée auprès d'enfants dyslexiques et normo lecteurs du CE2 au CM2. Un protocole d'évaluation permettant d'aider au diagnostic de la dyslexie est proposé, ainsi qu'un étalonnage du Reversal Test chez les sujets scolarisés du CE2 au CM2. Il a mis en avant chez les sujets dyslexiques de cette étude un nombre plus important de confusions visuelles relié à un défaut de rotation mentale des items proposés, ce qui rejoint l'hypothèse émise par l'équipe de Rüsseler et al. (2005) qui se traduit sur la flexibilité des compétences des sujets dyslexiques. Des pistes de remédiation peuvent cependant être proposées pour diminuer le nombre de confusions visuelles chez le sujet dyslexique, il est en effet intéressant d'associer le geste moteur et la valeur phonologique au signe écrit source de confusions visuelles.

Although typical aging does not cause low vision, four major causes of vision impairment are directly related to the aging process: (1) age-related macular degeneration (AMD), (2) diabetic retinopathy, (3) glaucoma, and (4) cataracts. Instances of these impairments are expected to double by the year 2050, making low vision a significant public health issue. This Practice Guideline includes occupational therapy assessment and intervention guidelines for older adults who have visual acuity impairments, visual field impairments, or both as a result of a low vision diagnosis. Screening, referral, and evaluation are covered for clients for central visual field impairments, such as AMD and cataract; peripheral field impairments, such as glaucoma, hemianopsia, and quadrantanopsia; and mixed visual field loss, such as diabetic retinopathy. This work can help occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants, as well as individuals who manage, reimburse, or set policy regarding occupational therapy services, understand the contribution of occupational therapy to treating older adults with low vision.
