Book Synopsis The Teleoscopic Polity by : Tom D. Dillehay
Download or read book The Teleoscopic Polity written by Tom D. Dillehay and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2014-01-30 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides an up-to-date and in-depth summary and analysis of the political practices of pre-Columbian communities of the Araucanians or Mapuche of south-central Chile and adjacent regions. This synthesis draws upon the empirical record documented in original research, as well as a critical examination of previous studies. By applying both archaeological and ethnohistorical approaches, the latter including ethnography, this volume distinguishes itself from many other studies that explore South American archaeology. Archaeological and traditional-historical narratives of the pre-European past are considered in their own terms and for the extent to which they can be integrated in order to provide a more rounded and realistic understanding than otherwise of the origins and courses of ecological, economic, social and political changes in south-central Chile from late pre-Hispanic times, through the contact period and up to Chile’s independence from Spain (ca. AD 1450-1810). Both the approach and the results are discussed in the light of similar situations elsewhere. Throughout its treatment, the volume continually comes back to two central questions: (1) how did the varied practices, institutions and worldviews of the Mapuche’s ancient communities emerge as a historical process that resisted the Spanish empire for more than 250 years? and (2) how were these communities reproduced and transformed in the face of ongoing culture contact and landscape change during the early Colonial period? These questions are considered in light of contemporary theoretical concepts regarding practice, landscape, environment, social organization, materiality and community that will make the book relevant for students and scholars interested in similar processes elsewhere.
Book Synopsis The Archaeology and Ethnohistory of Araucanian Resilience by : Jacob J. Sauer
Download or read book The Archaeology and Ethnohistory of Araucanian Resilience written by Jacob J. Sauer and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-09-13 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines the processes and patterns of Araucanian cultural development and resistance to foreign influences and control through the combined study of historical and ethnographic records complemented by archaeological investigation in south-central Chile. This examination is done through the lens of Resilience Theory, which has the potential to offer an interpretive framework for analyzing Araucanian culture through time and space. Resilience Theory describes “the capacity of a system to absorb disturbances and reorganize while undergoing change so as to still retain the same function.” The Araucanians incorporated certain Spanish material culture into their own, rejected others, and strategically restructured aspects of their political, economic, social, and ideological institutions in order to remain independent for over 350 years.

Book excerpt: Surveys by the International Ecotourism Society reveal that more than three-quarters of American travelers feel it is important not to damage the environment they are visiting. Green Earth Guide: Traveling Naturally in Spain helps travelers to Spain accomplish that goal. Author Dorian Yates focuses exclusively on where to find things green and alternative in one of the world’s most popular travel destinations: local and organic foods, natural health care, ecological businesses, organic vineyards, renewable energy, yoga and meditation centers, national parks, public transportation, and other green places and services of interest. Written in a friendly, accessible style with personal anecdotes, how-to travel tips, and practical information, this second book in the series is aimed at helping travelers leave a smaller footprint wherever they venture. The book rescues readers who are accustomed to a certain level of green consciousness at home but end up compromising their values on vacation. Author Yates shows how to make the most environmentally beneficial choices for basic needs—food, shelter, health, exercise—while enjoying sites of ecological, historical, and natural interest along the way. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Download or read book Christ, Mary, and the Saints written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-12-10 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last decade has witnessed a striking upsurge of interest in Iberian hagiography. In painting and the fine arts through to poetic and narrative treatments composed in Castilian and Catalan, the legacies of Christ, Mary, and the saints have been approached from a range of perspectives and subjected to detailed critical scrutiny. This book, which focuses specifically on the application of theoretical and methodological approaches to analysis, asks what scholars of early Iberian hagiography can bring to the analysis of the sacred past and how the study of the discipline can be taken forward innovatively in the future. Its fourteen essays, each focusing on a different aspect of composition, seek in particular to explore interdisciplinary methodologies and the ways in which they intersect with broader discourses in other branches of research. Contributors are Carme Arronis Llopis, Fernando Baños Vallejo, Andrew M. Beresford, Sarah Jane Boss, Sarah V. Buxton, Marinela Garcia Sempere, Ryan D. Giles, Ariel Guiance, Lluís Ramon i Ferrer, Rebeca Sanmartín Bastida, Connie L. Scarborough, and Lesley K. Twomey.
