Book excerpt: Savannah is known for its Victorian-style homes, lovely squares, society balls, and colorful people. One such notable Savannahian is Robert “Reds” Helmey. On Super Bowl Sunday in 1969, the day Joe Namath was picking apart the Baltimore Colts’ seemingly invincible secondary defense, Reds Helmey was hijacking a United Airlines flight to Havana. Acting as a lone ranger, this former Green Beret was bent on a mission to single-handedly pick through a myriad of personal security defenses to get Fidel Castro. On January 11, Reds boarded a commercial 727 from Miami and forced its pilot to fly to Cuba. As the jet approached Havana, he had the pilot send a transmission to flight control. The actual radio transmission to air traffic control at Havana’s Jose Marti Airport was, “Tell Fidel El Rojo is coming.” “Overwhelming patriotism of a citizen soldier. Reds would go the extra miles for his country; he just had his own way of doing things and I’m glad he did.” —Curtis E. Harper, LTC USAR, Ret. Ex-Marine, Ranger Tab, Special Forces Tab, Master Parachutist, and decorated Vietnam combat veteran “An assassination plot [one of many, as documented by former contract agents of CIA] against Fidel Castro was spawned by CIA in 1969, using a special forces operative, Reds Helmey.” —Barbara Hartwell Former CIA Psychological Operations “Helmey kept belief in ‘CIA Plot.’” —Corbett H. Thigpen Psychiatrist and coauthor of The Three Faces of Eve “A reader could easily conclude that the author’s fascinating life and exciting reflections are fiction. Not so! Reds is a unique and patriotic American who has lived a life that many would envy. I have known him for over sixty years, and the book represents the Reds Helmey I know!” —Frank W. “Sonny” Seiler Trial Attorney over fifty years, former president of the State Bar of Georgia, and past president of the University of Georgia National Alumni Association “I found the story fascinating!” —John Berendt Author of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil “Reds has a good sense of character and dialogue. The sexual interludes are very well done, with understated humor. A nice feel for rhythm. Never overdone. Simple, yet solid.” —William F. Nolan The prolific author of over sixty novels and books of nonfiction, including Logan’s Run

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The animal with the red fur and the fluffy tail was traveling north to find a new home, and he found Wildwood Village. It seemed a good place to stop, especially when he found the injured, red-furred lady in the rock den. It wseemed even better when she was very happy to see him. One thing better than two friends was three of them, and when the trio joins together with their carrying baskets, surprising things can be found. Who would think that they would get to hold, in their bare hands, the tiny baby meadow voles. It happened, though, and there were pictures to prove it. It is not likely that they would have even found the baby voles if it had not been for Quatro, the immigrant fox. This is the fourteenth book of the Twenty Book Series, Wildwood Village Summer Camp, where 25 girls, ages ten to twelve, could spend a summer with each other and the local animals of central Oklahoma.

Book excerpt: Valoree no longer has to masquerade as her murdered brother and scourge the oceans as Captain Red. She no longer has to command his pirate band in a quest to regain his birthright. She has been named heir to Ainsley Castle. But no executor would ever hand over the estate to an unmarried pirate wench and her infamous crew—no matter to whom she’d been born. And the will distinctly states that in order to inherit, Valoree must be married to a nobleman . . . and pregnant. Upon learning that, the virgin captain is ready to return to the seas—but her crew has other ideas— and for those rascally cusses she would do anything. If they could find a way to put on her a sweet face that would fool the ton, she would handle the rest, even with a drunken prostitute as an “aunt” and her merry cutthroat crew as “servants.” But to herself she swears one thing: she will only marry a man who fires her blood, a man who is not afraid of a . . . Lady Pirate “LYNSAY SANDS has just the right touch of humor and the perfect amount of mystery to hold you in her grasp . . . . LADY PIRATE is a delicious treat.” - RT BOOKreviews

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this second edition of The Repeating Island, Antonio Benítez-Rojo, a master of the historical novel, short story, and critical essay, continues to confront the legacy and myths of colonialism. This co-winner of the 1993 MLA Katherine Singer Kovacs Prize has been expanded to include three entirely new chapters that add a Lacanian perspective and a view of the carnivalesque to an already brilliant interpretive study of Caribbean culture. As he did in the first edition, Benítez-Rojo redefines the Caribbean by drawing on history, economics, sociology, cultural anthropology, psychoanalysis, literary theory, and nonlinear mathematics. His point of departure is chaos theory, which holds that order and disorder are not the antithesis of each other in nature but function as mutually generative phenomena. Benítez-Rojo argues that within the apparent disorder of the Caribbean—the area’s discontinuous landmasses, its different colonial histories, ethnic groups, languages, traditions, and politics—there emerges an “island” of paradoxes that repeats itself and gives shape to an unexpected and complex sociocultural archipelago. Benítez-Rojo illustrates this unique form of identity with powerful readings of texts by Las Casas, Guillén, Carpentier, García Márquez, Walcott, Harris, Buitrago, and Rodríguez Juliá.
