Book excerpt: Since 1980, when El Paso's Geologic Past was first published, this book has been popular with El Pasoans and visitors alike, interested in the unusually rich geologic setting of the El Paso community. In this new edition, the text has been updated, by William C. Cornell, Ph.D., of the University of Texas at El Paso Geology Department. New photographs have replaced the originals, the self-guided tour is revised, and a brief discussion of the Rio Grande Rift - a major geologic feature only beginning to be recognized in 1980 is added, along with an updated reading list.
Book Synopsis The Geology of Southern New Mexico by : Greg H. Mack
Download or read book The Geology of Southern New Mexico written by Greg H. Mack and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The geology of southern New Mexico and west Texas represents over a billion years of earth's history. Evidence of events such as explosive eruptions of great volcanoes, uplift and erosion of ancient mountains, and deposition of sediment in subtropical seas is available for those who know how to read the rocks. This guide for non-specialists not only provides the necessary background for comprehension but also a guide to local features. Part I explains the basic principles of geology, including the origin of rocks, geologic time, rock deformation, and plate tectonics. Part II divides the geologic history of the region into eight major events and illustrates both the rock strata produced by each event and the ancient geography of the era. Part III contains twenty-two field trips to view geologic history, mostly in easily accessible natural outcrops. Natives and visitors alike will find that this clearly written and well-illustrated book contributes to a greater appreciation of the unique landscape of the southwest.

Book Synopsis Groundwater Management in El Paso, Texas by : William Hutchuson
Download or read book Groundwater Management in El Paso, Texas written by William Hutchuson and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2006-06 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Groundwater represents an important supply source for municipal and irrigation uses in Far West Texas. The City of El Paso receives about 50 percent of its municipal water supply from surface water and 50 percent from local groundwater. Groundwater pumping in El Paso is from the Hueco Bolson and the Mesilla Bolson. Historic groundwater pumping in the Texas portion of the Mesilla Bolson has not resulted in significant changes in groundwater levels or groundwater quality in existing wells. Historic pumping in the Hueco Bolson has resulted in lowered groundwater levels and brackish groundwater intrusion. The groundwater level declines have resulted in the intrusion of brackish groundwater into areas that historically pumped fresh groundwater. A 1979 assessment concluded that El Paso would deplete fresh groundwater in the Hueco Bolson by 2030 if groundwater pumping continued to increase. Partly as a result of the 1979 assessment, El Paso reduced its groundwater pumping from the Hueco Bolson by increasing surface water diversions from the Rio Grande, increasing conservation efforts, and increasing reclaimed water use. As a result, groundwater levels in many parts of the Hueco Bolson have stabilized. Brackish groundwater intrusion remains an issue, and is being addressed with a brackish groundwater desalination plant, currently under construction. The new wells and existing wells that will supply this desalination plant will also assist in the management of brackish groundwater intrusion by intercepting the brackish groundwater before it can flow towards existing fresh groundwater wells. The 2006 Far West Texas Regional Water Plan contemplates a groundwater transfer project to meet increasing demands in El Paso County beginning about 2030, mostly from the Dell City area in Hudspeth County, Texas. Groundwater management in the Dell City area is governed by a groundwater conservation district that has established limits on groundwater pumping based on existing and historic uses. Groundwater pumping for irrigation began in the Dell City area in 1948, and groundwater levels have been essentially stable for since the 1980s. Future planning for a groundwater transfer project will require a detailed understanding of the hydrogeology of the groundwater in the Dell City area.

Book excerpt: A selection of papers presented at the 13th International Conference of the International Bryozoology Association held in Concepción Chile in January 2004 and hosted by the Universidad de Concepción and Universidad Católica de la Santísima Concepción. The topics presented in this volume reflect the diversity of studies on bryozoa with authors from 18 countries. They include investigations in seven thematic areas: ecology and life strategies; recent and fossil faunas of Australia and New Zealand; past and present bryozoans from both Antarctic and Arctic seas; geology and palaeontology of bryozoans from Eurasia and North America; fresh water bryozoans around the world; fossil bryozoans of the Mediterranean and Tethyan realms and evolution and diversity of recent species. This volume represents the newest advances made in bryozoological studies during the last three years, and makes a significant contribution to the literature.
