Book Synopsis Jews of a Saharan Oasis by : John O. Hunwick
Download or read book Jews of a Saharan Oasis written by John O. Hunwick and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jews spread out from Israel into northern Africa after the Roman destruction of much of Jerusalem in 70 A.D. and settled in Saharan oases. Although there was no love for Jews after the birth of Islam five centuries later, Muslim Arabs accepted Jews' right to retain their own religion in lands they occupied, and so violence against them was quite rare. That enabled many Jews to remain in North Africa after Arab conquest of the region. However, after Jews living in Tlemcen [Algeria], or in the oasis of Touat became involved in trans-Saharan trade, even with Muslims, strong opposition to them occurred. Tlemcen, seen by Jews as 'Jerusalem of the West, ' was primarily Muslim occupied, and for economic reasons, the Jews living there became greatly disliked on account of their trans-Saharan trading - mainly for gold. A Tlemcen scholar, Muhammad al-Maghili, spent time in Touat, and used Islam-based arguments to destroy their synagogue there and expel them. He also got Jews excluded from the Songhay Empire. This book examines the whole process, with translations of Arabic Islamic writings on Jews and their rights to pursue their religion

In keeping with all of Steiner's writings, this book in line with the Western esoteric tradition and the great esotericists of the West. With a short introduction on Steiner's life, the themes are developed in modern terms. Steiner shows that immortality is not just a continuation of life after death, but also involves a continuation of life in the spiritual world through reincarnation in the physical world. He shows how we can begin to understand the mysteries of reincarnation and immortality by developing our higher faculties of imagination, inspiration, and intuition. Steiner also explores the mysteries of the human being, human evolution, the nature of Anthroposophy, and social issues. Book Synopsis Critical Social Theory and the End of Work by : Edward Granter
Download or read book Critical Social Theory and the End of Work written by Edward Granter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-22 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Critical Social Theory and the End of Work examines the development and sociological significance of the idea that work is being eliminated through the use of advanced production technology. Granter’s engagement with the work of key American and European figures such as Marx, Marcuse, Gorz, Habermas and Negri, focuses his arguments for the abolition of labour as a response to the current socio-historical changes affecting our work ethic and consumer ideology. By combining history of ideas with social theory, this book considers how the 'end of work' thesis has developed and has been critically implemented in the analysis of modern society. This book will appeal to scholars of sociology, history of ideas, social and cultural theory as well as those working in the fields of critical management and sociology of work.
