Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book discusses how some works of art produced in Latin America in the sixties, seventies, and eighties forged a different understanding of the female body, understood as space for the expression of a dissident subjectivity in relation to socially normalized places. Representations of art and of feminist activism interrogated the disciplining of the female body that entails as well the disciplining of the male body. Before a history of highly regulated artistic representations-regardless of the occasional exceptions a historian might point out-images erupted that questioned the social and institutional naturalization of the feminine and the masculine"--

Book Synopsis Cultural Residues by : Nelly Richard
Download or read book Cultural Residues written by Nelly Richard and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A complex portrait of postdictatorial Chile by one of that country's most incisive cultural critics, this book uses memoirs, photographs, the plastic arts, novels, and other texts--the "residues" of a culture--to analyze the political-cultural Chilean landscape in the wake of Augusto Pinochet's seventeen-year military rule. Such residual areas reveal the flaws and lapses in Chile's transition from violent military dictatorship to electoral democracy. Nelly Richard's analysis ranges from an exploration of false memories of the recent past--especially memories of violence--to a discussion of the university under neoliberalism; from debates about the use of the word "gender" to an examination of refractory texts and cultural activities such as Diamela Eltit's "testimonio" of a schizophrenic vagabond, Eugenio Dittborn's use of photography in art installations, and transvestite performances. In "Cultural Residues, each instance becomes a suggestive metaphor for understanding a rapidly modernizing Chile attempting to redemocratize its public life.

Book Synopsis Latin American Women and the Literature of Madness by : Elvira Sánchez-Blake
Download or read book Latin American Women and the Literature of Madness written by Elvira Sánchez-Blake and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-05-11 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the turn of the millennium, narrative works by Latin American women writers have represented madness within contexts of sociopolitical strife and gender inequality. This book explores contemporary Latin American realities through madness narratives by prominent women authors, including Cristina Peri Rossi (Uruguay), Lya Luft (Brazil), Diamela Eltit (Chile), Cristina Rivera Garza (Mexico), Laura Restrepo (Colombia) and Irene Vilar (Puerto Rico). Close reading of these works reveals a pattern of literary techniques--a "poetics of madness"--employed by the writers to represent conditions that defy language, make sociopolitical crises tangible and register cultural perceptions of mental illness through literature.
Book Synopsis Cosmopolitanisms and Latin America by : J. Loss
Download or read book Cosmopolitanisms and Latin America written by J. Loss and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-06-12 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines Latin America's history of engagement with cosmopolitanisms as a manner of asserting a genealogy that links cultural critique in Latin America and the United States. Cosmopolitanism is crucial to any discussion of Latin America, and Latin Americanism as a discipline. Reinaldo Arenas and Diamela Eltit become nodal points to discuss a wide range of issues that include the pedagogical dimensions of the DVD commentary track, the challenges of the Internet to canonization, and links between ethical practices of Benetton and the U.S. academy. These authors, whose rejection of the comfort of regimented constituencies results in their writing being perceived as raw, vindictive, and even alienating, are ripe for critique. What they say about their relation to place with regard to their products' national and international viability is central. The book performs what it theorizes. It travels between methodologies, hence bridging the divide between cosmopolitanism and that alleged common space of Latin American identity as per the colonial experience, illustrating cosmopolitanism as a mediating operation that is crucial to any discussion of Latin America, and of Latin Americanism as a discipline.

Book Synopsis (Con)fusing Signs and Postmodern Positions by : Robert Alan Neustadt
Download or read book (Con)fusing Signs and Postmodern Positions written by Robert Alan Neustadt and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 1999 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conflicting Identities and Multiple Masculinities takes as its focus the construction of masculinity in Western Europe from the early Middle Ages until the fifteenth century, crossing from pre-Christian Scandinavia across western Christendom. The essays consult a broad and representative cross section of sources including the work of theological, scholastic, and monastic writers, sagas, hagiography and memoirs, material culture, chronicles, exampla and vernacular literature, sumptuary legislation, and the records of ecclesiastical courts. The studies address questions of what constituted male identity, and male sexuality. How was masculinity constructed in different social groups? How did the secular and ecclesiastical ideals of masculinity reinforce each other or diverge? These essays address the topic of medieval men and, through a variety of theoretical, methodological, and disciplinary approaches, significantly extend our understanding of how, in the Middle Ages, masculinity and identity were conflicted and multifarious.
Book Synopsis (Con)Fusing Signs and Postmodern Positions by : Robert Neustadt
Download or read book (Con)Fusing Signs and Postmodern Positions written by Robert Neustadt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-06-12 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foregrounding a strategy of experimental techniques which Neustadt call (con)fusing signs, the book explores critical and political dimensions of contemporary Spanish American artistic practices that are often explained away in the vague name of postmodern fragmentation. ( Con)Fusing Signs explores the techniques, consequences and purposes for this type of fragmentation. This study reassesses the much discussed crisis of representation through an analysis of the complexity of political critique in areas as diverse (and related) as postmodernity, military dictatorship and postcolonialism. This book explores the manner in which multimedia artists Diamela Eltit, Alejandro Jodorowsky, and Guillermo G-mez-Pe-a articulate political critiques through textual (con)fusion while paradoxically underscoring their inability to get outside of discourse.
