Book excerpt: Policy-makers are concerned with facilitating labour mobility in the EU. In the 1990s, take-up of employment in other EU countries has remained small. This seminal work looks at the obstacles faced by women in the nursing and banking professions when they migrate between member states. Basing her analysis on the personal accounts of migrants, and discussions with colleagues and regulatory bodies in Britain, Germany and Spain, the author sheds light on one of the major challenges confronting the EU.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume considers the impact of information technology on women's employment and education by examining two main themes: the effect of women's perspectives on systems analysis and design; and the factors which lead to the under-representation of women in the computer profession, and in particular, to the low numbers of female students of computer science and informatics. Statistics on participation of women in the computer industry are included, along with theories and empirical findings on participatory design of office systems and case studies on the impact of information technology on gendered division of labour. Papers suggesting ways of overcoming the problems faced both by women users of computer systems and by women entering the computing profession complete the volume.

This reference work offers a thorough overview of recent developments in sociology in a wide range of countries. The chapters, written by expert contributors, provide first-hand information on new research trends and significant advances. Chapters generally provide a broad historical context, and then focus on developments in sociology since 1975. Part One contains chapters on sociology in Western and Northern Europe. Part Two, on the Western Hemisphere, includes several chapters on sociology in the United States, along with Canada and Latin America. Part Three discusses the many changes in Eastern Europe that have happened in recent years, while Parts Four, Five, and Six, covering Southern Europe, Africa and the Middle East, and the Far East add a valuable perspective to the work. Chapters include detailed bibliographies, and a selected, general bibliography concludes the work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on 17 case studies in European Community countries and a literature review, this research project derives several findings--some of them contradictory--about the evolution of qualifications related to office technology. The population studied was office technology users below the executive level. The project found that the impact of the new information technologies (NITs) is dependent on the following factors: technical characteristics and possible applications, the economic context that produces the objectives or expected results, the organizational set-up, and finally, an important factor, the methods of human resource management and the behavior of the individual and professional groups concerned. The research is organized in three chapters. The first chapter shows how technology, applications, the context, and the occupational categories have evolved since the 1960s, and how the daily experience of NITs has brought about new concepts of information and changes in patterns of behavior and roles. The second chapter shows how occupational activity has had to redefine its content and cope with a rearrangement of jobs, especially jobs in the banking, insurance, and secretarial sectors. The options offered by the present are highlighted in the last chapter. A 177-item bibliography arranged by country is included. (KC)

Download or read book COVID-19 and Social Change in Spain written by Carlos de Castro and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-11-18 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originating in the popular Sociología en Cuarantena blog, this volume provides a detailed and multifaceted analysis of the social impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in Spain. This book originates in the great upheaval caused by the COVID-19 pandemic when the unprecedented announcement of global lockdowns paralysed the world and put social relations on hold. In response, a loose collective of sociologists, historians and philosophers from various Spanish universities began to share their reflections on the pandemic on the Sociología en Cuarantena blog. This book takes some of those thoughts and delves deeper into the recurring themes as they relate to the Spanish experience of the pandemic. The chapters in the first part of the book address the social and political context of the various measures put in place by the government to deal with the health, economic and social effects of the pandemic. Subsequently, several chapters examine how the pandemic led to important reflections on uncertainty and authority in processes of scientific knowledge production. Other chapters analyse the effects of the pandemic on demographics, the organisation of care, the education system, the organisation of work and the recognition of essential workers, immigration policies and the digitalisation of society. Collectively, the contributions call into question the narrative of exceptionalism that views the pandemic as a singular event that is uniquely responsible for the present situation of uncertainty and instability. They also draw attention to the fragility of social prestige and trust in neglected and weakened public institutions, as well as identifying a growing socio-political polarisation that may be highly significant in the future. This collection will appeal to students and researchers with an interest in contemporary Spain and the socio-political effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
