Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Going Down to Morocco (Bajarse al moro), is one of the most emblematic and best known theatrical work of recent times in Spain. It both contributed to and documented La Movida, a drug-fuelled youth movement that placed Madrid firmly on the global cultural map in the early 1980s. Alonso de Santos' play, a commercial and critical success when first staged in 1985, was made into a film starring Antonio Banderas in 1989. Chusa, a free-spirited and spontaneously generous young drug smuggler introduces Elena, a middle-class runaway, to the apartment she shares with her cousin Pepito and her boyfriend Alberto, a rookie policeman. The result is chaos in their previously disorderly but happy life. The comedy explores opposing lifestyles of young people in 1980s Spain, during a period of radical social change. It is characterised by humour, creative use of contemporary slang, and intertextual film references. Duncan Wheeler's translation of the original play marks with footnotes the changes made in the new version done in 2008 for a high-profile revival to celebrate its twenty-fifth anniversary. This edition also includes an unpublished interview conducted by Duncan Wheeler with Alonso de Santos in 2010.

This book shows just why his fame has endured, through an exploration of his most popular works: Romancero Gitano, Poeta en Nueva York and the trilogy of tragic plays - Blood Wedding, Yerma and The House of Bernarda Alba.Feted by his contemporaries, Federico García Lorca's status has only grown since his death in 1936: poet, playwright, political martyr, gay icon, champion of women, defender of the oppressed. This book guides readers through the key themes and concerns in Lorca's work. It demonstrates how Lorca applied his poetic sensibilities and lyrical craft to what were, in essence, tangible, real-life issues: the plight of Andalusia's Romani people, the idea of modernity and the condition of women in Spain. What becomes evident is that, even though he was writing at a time when many writers and artists were less inclined to deal directly with the things of the world, Lorca maintained a profound interest in the human subject and in the world around him. It is this interest, the book argues, in tandem with his poetic vision and craft, that ensured his most popular works' enduring, universal appeal.in the human subject and in the world around him. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Migrant domestic workers, most of whom are women, have long been subjected to overwork, underpayment and modern slavery. During the COVID-19 pandemic, when governments all over the world urged the public to stay at home, it means something different to those domestic workers who are required to live with their employers, as their so-called “homes” in a foreign society are actually their workplace. This book invites us to hear the voices from domestic workers in Hong Kong. Apart from sharing their stories as migrant domestic workers in Hong Kong, they also shared their work experience in Singapore, Taiwan, Saudi Arabia and the UK, which indicates that their vulnerability is across borders. Through joining domestic workers’ Sunday gatherings, informal observation, and conducting multiple in-depth informal interviews with more than 20 Filipino and Indonesian domestic workers in Hong Kong amid COVID-19, Novia Bin traces these domestic workers’ life trajectories, documents their experiences, struggles, opinions and wishes, aiming to present their untold stories as well as activism. This book discusses how poverty and social exclusion lead to migrant domestic workers’ powerless situation, and how many of them are persistent in fighting for their human rights and labour rights. Beyond that, it also explores other identities of the domestic workers who could be artists, photographers, writers, union leaders, gifted language learners and activists. Without using any theories and jargon, this book tries to include readers from outside of academia. Anyone who cares about universal human rights could be a potential reader of this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Contemporary Spanish-American Novel provides an accessible introduction to an important World literature. While many of the authors covered-Aira, Bolaño, Castellanos Moya, Vásquez-are gaining an increasing readership in English and are frequently taught, there is sparse criticism in English beyond book reviews. This book provides the guidance necessary for a more sophisticated and contextualized understanding of these authors and their works. Underestimated or unfamiliar Spanish American novels and novelists are introduced through conceptually rigorous essays. Sections on each writer include: *the author's reception in their native country, Spanish America, and Spain *biographical history *a critical examination of their work, including key themes and conceptual concerns *translation history *scholarly reception The Contemporary Spanish-American Novel offers an authoritative guide to a rich and varied novelistic tradition. It covers all demographic areas, including United States Latino authors, in exploring the diversity of this literature and its major themes, such as exile, migration, and gender representation.
