Book Synopsis Calderón in the German Lands and the Low Countries by : Henry W. Sullivan
Download or read book Calderón in the German Lands and the Low Countries written by Henry W. Sullivan and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-10-29 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book recounts the afterlife of the great Golden Age dramatist Pedro Calderón de la Barca in Dutch and German-speaking Europe. The high quality of the German critical and philosophical tradition has led to a far greater appreciation of Calderón outside than inside his native Spain, and it is in the German territories that the playwright's influence has been most remarkable and widespread. Professor Sullivan documents and analyses Calderón's reception and influence on the stage and on playwriting, criticism, philosophy and music in these territories. In addressing his book to students of both the German and the Spanish traditions Professor Sullivan has supplied the necessary background to both cultures and has rendered all quotations into English. The range of material will also make the book important for students of philosophy, comparative drama and German opera.

Book Synopsis Sins of the Fathers by : Hilaire Kallendorf
Download or read book Sins of the Fathers written by Hilaire Kallendorf and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2013-12-06 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sins of the Fathers considers sins as nodes of cultural anxiety and explores the tensions between competing organizational categories for moral thought and behaviours, namely the Seven Deadly Sins and the Ten Commandments. Hilaire Kallendorf explores the decline and rise of these organizational categories against critical transformations of the early modern period, such as the accession of Spain to a position of world dominance and the arrival of a new courtly culture to replace an old warrior ethos. This ground-breaking study is the first to consider Spanish Golden Age comedias as an archive of moral knowledge. Kallendorf has examined over 800 of these plays to illustrate how they provide insight into aspects of early modern experience such as food, sex, work, and money. Finally, Kallendorf engages the theoretical terminology of Marxist literary criticism to demonstrate the inherent ambiguity of cultural change.

Book Synopsis The Entremés for Performance by : Kerry Wilks
Download or read book The Entremés for Performance written by Kerry Wilks and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2024-02-29 with total page 602 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This bilingual anthology brings together a collection of Spanish entremeses, the comic interludes that were performed between the acts of a comedia. Penned by authors such as Lope de Rueda, Cervantes, Calderón, Quevedo, and Quiñones de Benavente, many of these plays appear here for the first time in English. Translated for performability, these plays create a panoramic view of one-act plays from Spain’s classical theater period. Presented with discussions of dramaturgical and performance possibilities and difficulties, including relevant historical, cultural, and social information for the plays, the collection opens with two precursors to the entremés, moves through the breadth of the entremés form, and concludes with works from the 18th century, including a sainete. There are also examples of trans-adaptation that show how these works can be interpreted through strong directorial concepts that relocate the plays in historical time and location. The selected titles raise challenges to social mores and expectations, surprise with their humor, and delight with their stagecraft. Whether aimed at the classroom or the stage, the collection is valuable for research, pedagogy, and performance.
Book Synopsis The Limits of Illusion: A Critical Study of Calderón by : Anthony J. Cascardi
Download or read book The Limits of Illusion: A Critical Study of Calderón written by Anthony J. Cascardi and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1984-09-13 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first thorough study of Calderón in comparison with other important dramatists of the period: Lope de Vega and Tirso de Molina in Spain, Racine and Corneille in France, and Shakespeare and Marlowe in England. Cascardi studies Calderón's paradoxical engagement with illusion in its philosophical guise as scepticism. He shows on the one hand Calderón's moral will to reject illusion and on the other his theatrical need to embrace it. Cascardi discusses plays from every period to show how in Calderón's best work illusion is not rejected; instead, scepticism is absorbed. Calderón is placed in and defined against the philosophical line of Vives, Descartes, and Spinoza. Of central importance to this argument is Calderón's idea of theatre and the various transformations of that idea. This emphasis will give the book an additional interest to students, readers in philosophy and comparative literature.
