A year before, his father had died and his mother had moved from Cuba to Miami to become a hairdresser so she could support Burt and his younger sister. From his initial struggles learning English to his first job as a paperboy to hotel pool boy to Marine sergeant to hotel night clerk and, ultimately, to the founder and owner of Benchmark, A Global Hospitality Company, Burt's is a classic American success story. Given his background, it is not surprising that Burt has many insights to share: the wisdom of letting things take their course the folly of having a big ego the need to take risks the realization that listening beats talking and, the importance of believing that everything is possible Using examples, anecdotes, and stories, he shows us how these and other principles apply to the daily life of a business.

Book excerpt: Entrepreneurship and innovation are increasingly viewed as key contributors to global economic and social development. University-based entrepreneurship ecosystems (U-BEEs) provide a supportive context in which entrepreneurship and innovation can thrive. In that vein, this book provides critical insight based on cutting-edge analyses of how to frame, design, launch, and sustain efforts in the area of entrepreneurship. Seven success factors were derived from an in-depth analysis of six leading, and very different, university-based entrepreneurship ecosystems in North America, Latin America, Europe, and Asia. These seven success factors are: (1) senior leadership vision, engagement and sponsorship; (2) strong programmatic and faculty leadership; (3) sustained commitment over a long period of time; (4) commitment of substantial financial resources; (5) commitment to continuing innovation in curriculum and programs; (6) an appropriate organizational infrastructure; and (7) commitment to building the extended enterprise and achieving critical mass. Based on these success factors, the authors provide a series of recommendations for the development of a comprehensive university-based entrepreneurship ecosystem. This major assessment of how best to drive university-based entrepreneurship ecosystems is essential reading for anyone involved in higher education (particularly provosts, deans, and professors), government agencies concerned with socio-economic development, and all those concerned with helping entrepreneurship ecosystems to flourish.

Book excerpt: The second edition of this popular text has been thoroughly updated to reflect contemporary developments in small business and entrepreneurship and its applications to Australasian organisations. Entrepreneurship and small business management are two very close and often overlapping disciplines. If entrepreneurship specifically refers to the dynamic process of creating a new business venture, small business management generally addresses various issues in organising and operating a small business. In practice however, a large part of the textbooks contents from both disciplines tend to cover similar issues such as small business start-up (starting from scratch, buying an existing business or operating a franchise), developing a business plan, selecting a legal form of organisation, marketing research and organising and financing the new venture. Features New! Four end-of-book cases profiling Australasian entrepreneurs. Each case represents a different region covering Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia and Singapore. The companies profiled are within industries of interest to students including branded fitness programs, automatic video production and specialist healthcare. Each case is accompanied by comprehensive teaching notes. New! Accompanying local video cases and activities for instructors. The videos are closely tied to each end-of-book case, providing visual support to assist students’ understanding. Comprehensive text website including Instructor’s Resource Guide and Power Point slides The geographic markets for the book are both Australasia (Australia and New Zealand) and South East Asia (Indonesia, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore). As an increasing amount of goods, capital and people move between these two regions, this text will provide the reader with a better regional understanding of this environment. Book excerpt: Jo Frost, a.k.a Supernanny, is the answer to every stressed parent's dreams. In Channel 4's prime time series Jo works miracles on problem children, by dispensing tough love, no-nonsense rules and reassuring us that parents do know best. The Supernanny method gives parents the know-how to tackle any problem area, be it mealtime, bathtime, bedtime, bedwetting, homework, sibling rivalry, aggressive behaviour or a child who just won't do what he or she is told. In an era where parents are bombarded with conflicting or guilt-laden messages at every turn, and sometimes obey their kids' commands rather than the other way around, this is an upbeat, back-to-basics approach to restoring harmony and authority in the home. Jo has a magical way with children, but her methods are simple and can and do work for anyone: regular routine, consistency, verbal warnings, time out after misbehaviour, and rewarding good behaviour with lots of attention. your ten-month-old won't sleep through the night, or your two-year-old is out of control, Jo knows what to do and can show you how to do it. For anyone who doesn't feel in charge at home, this is a godsend of a book full of brilliantly commonsense advice - the only parenting book you'll ever want.

Book excerpt: Entrepreneurship Policy: Theory and Practice is the first book to fully analyze the construction of entrepreneurship policy, a rapidly-evolving area of policy about which little is known. From a study and assessment of the practices of governments in thirteen countries in Europe, North America and the Asia-Pacific, this book fully describes the policy area and shares new tools and methods for better understanding and explaining the why and how of an entrepreneurship policy approach. Unlike other research in the field of entrepreneurship where implications from research findings are used to suggest what policy actions should be taken to increase the level of entrepreneurship in an economy, this study is based on what entrepreneurship policy actions are being taken. This is a unique book in the field which points to the way forward both for policymakers and for the research community in terms of thinking about entrepreneurship policy and the complex issues surrounding its development.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doctor Hyder's meticulous and comprehensive study throws much needed light on the often invoked but little understood concept of "discrimination" in international law. It is also of great practical value to those who are concerned with the law of international trade. "Discrimination" is a word with bad connotations. It suggests un fairness, prejudice and favouritism. It seems to point to adeparture from the ideal of equal opportunities, equal rewards and even-handed legal protection of all human beings without regard to differences of race, religion, ethnic origin or sex. Similarly, in public international law "discrimination" suggests violation of the principle of equality of states. Yet there are vast areas of international relations in whieh states are regarded as being legally free, except as specially provided in treaties, to make distinctions between other states or their nationals. The principle of equality of states merely means that the many rules constituting what is often called "general (or universal) international law" apply equally to all independent states. Hence, by definition, such states have equal rights and duties under general international law. But the latter leaves vast areas of transnational activity to be regulated by states at their discretion either unilaterally or by special agreement with other states. No state has, in fact, exactly the same totality of rights and duties as other states, since no two states are parties to exactly the same treaties. By treaty, astate often grants to another state a right which it may withhold from third states.
