Book Synopsis The Cinema of Cecilia Bartolomé by : Sally Faulkner
Download or read book The Cinema of Cecilia Bartolomé written by Sally Faulkner and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2024-09-24 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Were it not for authoritarian state censorship, Cecilia Bartolomé’s name would figure alongside those of her contemporaries Agnès Varda and Claire Denis as a pioneering feminist filmmaker of the twentieth century. With this bold claim, this book seeks both to write the history of Bartolomé’s extant filmography, and speculate about censored and un-filmed work, thereby fashioning a new way of writing a feminist creative life in film. The first volume on this director to be written in English, The Cinema of Cecilia Bartolomé is also the first volume on the director published in any language for over twenty years. By focusing on Spanish-language cinema of the 1960s-90s, the period when feminism, like democracy, was re-born and seemingly consolidated in Spain, the study brings historical depth and transnational reach to current debates in the wake of #MeToo.

Book Synopsis The Routledge Handbook to Spanish Film Music by : Laura Miranda
Download or read book The Routledge Handbook to Spanish Film Music written by Laura Miranda and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-09-12 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Routledge Handbook to Spanish Film Music provides a significant contribution to the research and history of Spanish film music, exploring the interdependence and ways in which discourses of sound and vision are constructed dialogically in Spanish cinema, with contributions from leading international researchers from Spain, the USA, the UK, France and Germany. Offering a multifocal and multidisciplinary study between related areas such as music studies, film studies and Spanish cultural studies, this book is divided into four sections, covering the early years of Spanish cinema; the 1940s and 1950s in Spanish cinema—the first decades of the Franco dictatorship; the importance of Fraga Iribarne’s slogan, “Spain is different,” to promote Spain’s new openness to the world in the 1960s and 1970s; and Spanish cinema since the arrival of democracy in 1978, including discussion of contemporary Spanish cinema. The growing interest in Spanish cinema calls for the publication of studies about the role of music in its political and socio-cultural framework. This is therefore a valuable text for music and film scholars and professionals, university undergraduates and music conservatory students.
Book Synopsis Latin American Documentary Film in the New Millennium by : María Guadalupe Arenillas
Download or read book Latin American Documentary Film in the New Millennium written by María Guadalupe Arenillas and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-06-23 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nearly two decades into the new millennium, Latin American documentary film is experiencing renewed vibrancy and visibility on the global stage. While elements of the combative, politicized cinema of the 1960s and 1970s remain, the region’s production has become increasingly subjective, reflexive, and experimental, though perhaps no less political. At the same time, Latin American filmmakers both respond to and shape global tendencies in the genre. This book highlights the richness and heterogeneity of Latin American documentary film, surveys a broad range of national contexts, styles, and practices, and expands current debates on the genre. Thematic sections address the “subjective turn” of the 1990s and 2000s and the move beyond it; the ethics of the encounter between the filmmaker and the subject/object of his or her gaze; and the performance of truth and memory, a particularly urgent topic as Latin American countries have transitioned from dictatorship to democracy.

Book Synopsis When Media Succumbs to Rising Authoritarianism by : Ezequiel Korin
Download or read book When Media Succumbs to Rising Authoritarianism written by Ezequiel Korin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-01-27 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a transversal scholarly exploration of the multiple changes exhibited around Venezuelan media during the Chávez regime. Bringing together a body of original research by key scholars in the field, the book looks at the different processes entailed by Chavismo’s relationship with the media, extending their discussion beyond the boundaries of the specific cases or examples and into the entire articulation of a nearly-perfect communicational hegemony. It explores the wide-ranging transformations in the national mediascape, such as how censorship of journalistic endeavors has impacted news consumption/production in the country to the complexities of Venezuelan filmmaking during Chavismo, from the symbolic postmortem persistence of Chávez to the profound transformations undergone by telenovelas, from the politically induced migration of online audiences to the reinvention of media spaces for cultural journalism as forms of resistance. Allowing readers to engage not only with the particular case studies or exemplars presented, but with the underlying cultural, economic, political, societal, and technical aspects that come into play and which allow the extrapolation of this body of research onto other national or international contexts, this book will be an important resource for scholars and students of journalism, communication, media studies, and politics.
Book Synopsis Rethinking Third Cinema by : Frieda Ekotto
Download or read book Rethinking Third Cinema written by Frieda Ekotto and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2009 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1968, Argentinean Filmmakers Fernando Solanas and Octavio Getino first articulated the theory of a "Third Cinema" - a revolutionary genre of cinema that would counter oppression on a global scale. Intended to be a "guerilla cinema" geared at contesting the overwhelming dominance of Western cinema, Solana and Getino distinguished "Third Cinema" from other forms of cinema, classifying these other types as First Cinema (commercial cinema epitomized by Hollywood) and Second Cinema. "Third Cinema" was supposed to be a liberationary tool - particularly for the bulk of the world that was subject to European imperialism, such as Latin America, Africa and Asia. Spanning a wide geographical spread of cinemas ranging from Latin America, North and Sub-Saharan Africa, the Caribbean and Asia, this book addresses the following questions: how can we rethink the concept of "Third Cinema" for today? How do new national cinemas - and their accompanying media industries - reflect the concerns of societies that are struggling with the implications of accelerated modernization - and how are these concerns configured in new genres of aesthetics? Is there still a "Third Cinema" component in contemporary cinemas, and if so, how can it be understood?
