Book excerpt: From consumer products to architecture to advertising to digital technology, design is an undeniably global phenomenon. Yet despite their professed transnational perspective, historical studies of design have all too often succumbed to a bias toward Western, industrialized nations. This diverse but rigorously curated collection recalibrates our understanding of design history, reassessing regional and national cultures while situating them within an international context. Here, contributors from five continents offer nuanced studies that range from South Africa to the Czech Republic, all the while sensitive to the complexities of local variation and the role of nation-states in identity construction.

Download or read book Reverse Design written by Ana Cristina Broega and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-09-25 with total page 708 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collaboration between the Textile Department of the University of Minho and the Brazilian Association of Studies and Research (ABEPEM) has led to an international platform for the exchange of research in the field of Fashion and Design: CIMODE. This platform is designed as a biennial congress that takes place in different European and Latin American countries with the co-organization of another university in each location. The current edition was jointly organized by the University of Minho and the Centro Superior de Diseño de Moda (CSDMM) - Universidad Politécnica de Madrid. CIMODE's mission is to explore fashion and design from a social, cultural, psychological and communication perspective, and to bring together different approaches and perceptions of practice, education and the culture of design and fashion. Through an interdisciplinary dialogue and intercultural perspective, CIMODE wants to generate and present new scenarios about the present and future of fashion and design. ‘DISEÑO AL REVÉS’ (‘BACKWARD DESIGN’) was the central theme of the 4th CIMODE (Madrid, Spain, 21-23 May 2018), which produced a highly topical and relevant number of academic publications presented in this book.

Book Synopsis El Hombre ¿Azar o Diseño? by : José Francisco Martinez Garcia
Download or read book El Hombre ¿Azar o Diseño? written by José Francisco Martinez Garcia and published by Palibrio. This book was released on 2012-05 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "El hombre ¿azar o diseño?"

Book excerpt: Currently people deal with various entities (such as hardware, software, buildings, spaces, communities and other people), to meet specific goals while going about their everyday activities in work and leisure environments. These entities have become more and more complex and incorporate functions that hitherto had never been allocated such as automation, use in virtual environments, connectivity, personalization, mobility and friendliness. This book contributes to the analysis of human-system interactions from the perspective of ergonomics, regardless of how simple or complex they are, while incorporating the needs of users and workers in a healthy safe, efficient and enjoyable manner. This book provides a comprehensive review of the state of the art of current ergonomic in design methods and techniques that are being applied to products, machinery, equipment, workstations and systems while taking new technologies and their applications into consideration. Ergonomics in Design: Methods and Techniques is organized into four sections and 30 chapters covering topics such as conceptual aspects of ergonomics in design, the knowledge of human characteristics applied to design, and the methodological aspects of design. Examples are shown in several areas of design including, but not limited to, consumer products, games, transport, education, architecture, fashion, sustainability, biomechanics, intelligent systems, virtual reality, and neurodesign. Book Synopsis Graphic Design, Translated by : Peter J Wolf
Download or read book Graphic Design, Translated written by Peter J Wolf and published by Rockport Publishers. This book was released on 2010-07-01 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For centuries now, visual communication design has celebrated national identities (through the now-iconic identity systems developed for the Olympic Games, for example) at the same time as it transcends international borders, such as through the far-reaching influence of the Bauhaus and the International Typographic Style. Today, of course, such transcendence is easier than ever. In an era of nearly instantaneous global access, enabled by increasingly ubiquitous wireless connections, the world seems very small. Presented in five languages—English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish—Graphic Design, Translated is a reflection of the increasingly international nature of visual communication design. Illustrated with examples from around the globe, the book is a compilation of more than 200 of the profession’s most common terms, culled from a broad range of categories: design history, printing and paper, typography, digital technology, and general design practice. All of which makes this volume an essential reference for students, practitioners, clients–indeed, anybody interested in the global scope of today’s visual communication design.
Book Synopsis Design Development by : Gabriel Patrocínio
Download or read book Design Development written by Gabriel Patrocínio and published by Editora Blucher. This book was released on 2019-10-10 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The subject of Design Policies is slowly growing to be broadly discussed, although most of the time from within a design practitioners' and design enthusiasts' bubble. Public administration is gradually embracing design from another perspective - using Design Thinking to develop programmes and services. Lawmakers and government executives are still distant, frequently without a real knowledge of design and its potential. Governments (and designers as well) seem to be contented by design promotion actions or programmes, which are frequently wrongly accepted as a design policy. From this prospect, this book intends to be a contribution to the debate of Design Policies nourished by past experiences and reflections, but also from current practices - as in Europe and China, for example. The book was originally meant in hindsight of a document produced in the seventies by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, UNIDO, within the context of a partnership with the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design, ICSID. This partnership resulted in a document discussing design as a driver of economic growth, prepared by Gui Bonsiepe in 1973, and then summarized by the UNIDO Secretariat in 1975 as the Basic guidelines for policy of industrial design in developing countries. Both documents were made available for this book by UNIDO, and are reproduced here as appendices. Although originally aimed at developing countries, after these four decades of unsettling growth of wicked problems, this theme deserves to be reviewed and discussed thoroughly. Design might play a very significant role when approaching contemporary problems such as rearranging urban spaces, urban mobility, tourism, immigration, housing, violence, and environment among others. These - not so new - wicked problems prompts to a whole new perspective on design and public design policies that goes beyond the original context here. The perspective of the "Third World" economy (as it was known at the time) might offer insights to understand and perhaps solve problems of any size economy - especially if we consider the aspects of local or regional problems. It is time to exercise empathy towards someone else's problems and to reflect under different scales and measures, and design seem to be the perfect instrument for it. Mugendi M'Rithaa, former President of ICSID (currently the WDO, World Design Organization) saluted the book as "the most important contribution on this field in the last ten years" (cited in the final remarks of his interview in the chapter Design in Africa: I participate, therefore I am). In Brazil the book was awarded twice - initially at the Objeto:Brasil International Design Award in May 2016, and then later at the same year at the MCB (Museum of the Brazilian Home) Design Awards of 2016. The jury of this later has acclaimed the book as "a theoretical and academic milestone, with potential to change the current practice and understanding of Design." After the successful launch in Portugal with conferences in three design schools in 2016, the book was selected in 2017 to the exhibition Brasil: Hoje at MUDE, Lisbon's Museum of Fashion and Design. The curator, Frederico Duarte, highlighted in the catalogue: "The first and indispensable book on design and development in the Portuguese language." In 2018 the book was selected in Spain to be part of BID, the Ibero-American Design Biennial, in Madrid. In the same year was published an e-book edition in Portuguese to make it more accessible, at the same time that this first English edition started being prepared."

Download or read book Region written by Simon Richards and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-07-28 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how the concept of ‘region’ has evolved over time and shaped architectural culture and practice. It questions what the words ‘region’ and ‘regional’ mean for architecture, cities and landscapes past and present, and speculates on the forms they might take in the future. Region is explored in many thematic guises: as a real geographical site of evolving socio-economic activity; as a mythical locus of enduring value; as a gatekeeper of indigenous crafts and vernacular techniques; as a site of architectural and artistic imagination; as a repository of contested, conflicted and mobile identities. The contributing chapters take these themes from the theoretical and literary page through to architectural and urban practice, and from the scale of the domestic hearth through to the ocean archipelago and international law, enriching the long-standing trope of viewing architectural regionalism purely as a matter of style. Curated into four key thematic areas – Theorised Regions, Contested Regions, Heritage Regions and Future Regions – the book incorporates the values, concerns and approaches of a truly diverse international community of scholars, curators and practitioners, as well as the design work of international students tasked to explore what region means to them.
Download or read book Líneas written by Tim Ingold and published by Editorial GEDISA. This book was released on 2015-03-15 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PostDomestiCity is an inquiry and speculative exercise into the conditions of obsolescence in the post-industrial city, from a contemporary perspective. Working with three paradigmatic cases that were conceived from industrial logics—the Packard plant in Detroit, Lima’s PREVI neighbourhood, and theGrand’Mare complex in Rouen—, we explore alternative ways of reusing, reprogramming, and redensifying the built environment as alternatives to demolition. Relevant voices in the field of architecture share their approaches and visions of the future for the pre-existing city, helping us imagine post-domesticity in the current climate crisis and socio-technological context. Book Synopsis Words of the True Peoples/Palabras de los Seres Verdaderos by : Carlos Montemayor
Download or read book Words of the True Peoples/Palabras de los Seres Verdaderos written by Carlos Montemayor and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2014-07-03 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As part of the larger, ongoing movement throughout Latin America to reclaim non-Hispanic cultural heritages and identities, indigenous writers in Mexico are reappropriating the written word in their ancestral tongues and in Spanish. As a result, the long-marginalized, innermost feelings, needs, and worldviews of Mexico's ten to twenty million indigenous peoples are now being widely revealed to the Western societies with which these peoples coexist. To contribute to this process and serve as a bridge of intercultural communication and understanding, this groundbreaking, three-volume anthology gathers works by the leading generation of writers in thirteen Mexican indigenous languages: Nahuatl, Maya, Tzotzil, Tzeltal, Tojolabal, Tabasco Chontal, Purepecha, Sierra Zapoteco, Isthmus Zapoteco, Mazateco, Ñahñu, Totonaco, and Huichol. Volume 1 contains narratives and essays by Mexican indigenous writers. Their texts appear first in their native language, followed by English and Spanish translations. Frischmann and Montemayor have abundantly annotated the English, Spanish, and indigenous-language texts and added glossaries and essays that trace the development of indigenous texts, literacy, and writing. These supporting materials make the anthology especially accessible and interesting for nonspecialist readers seeking a greater understanding of Mexico's indigenous peoples. The other volumes of this work will be Volume 2: Poetry/Poesía and Volume 3: Theater/Teatro.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To Write What one Could Not Tell Anyone You who live in all tranquility So warm and comfortable in your houses, You who come home at night to find The table laid and friendly faces around you, Consider if this is a man, He who toils in the mud, Who knows no rest, Who fights for a crust of bread, Who dies for the slightest reason. Consider if this is a woman, She who has lost her name and her hair, And even the strength to remember, Her gaze blank and her bosom chilled, Like a frog in winter. Do not forget that this happened, No, do not forget it: Engrave these words in your heart. Think of them in your home, in the street, When you sleep, when you rise; Repeat them to your children. Or else your house will crumble, You will be overcome by illness, And your children will turn away from you (Levi 1987:9, the translations is mine). At Auschwitz, Filip Müller was assigned to the Sonderkommando. Every day, with his fellow prisoners, he emptied the gas chambers of their piles of defiled corpses and loaded them into the crematorium furnaces of the extermination camp.
