Book excerpt: Francisco Mojica explica que la prospectiva es una disciplina cuya actividad central es la identificación de un futuro probable y de un futuro deseable, diferente de la fatalidad y que depende únicamente del conocimiento que tenemos sobre las acciones que el hombre quiera emprender1. La definición de Mojica no es desordenada, él antepone la probabilidad a lo deseable por una razón clara (y práctica): ¿De qué sirve plantear lo deseable cuando su probabilidad bien podría ser nula? En el orden planteado por Mojica, entonces se debe explorar primero en el mundo de lo posible para luego determinar qué es lo más probable y si eso, es lo deseable. Si lo más probable es lo más deseable, entonces el hombre debe emprender acciones que fortalezcan esa probabilidad y aseguren su ocurrencia hasta que se logre la meta deseada. Pero, si por el contrario, lo más probable es lo' menos deseable, entonces el hombre debe emprender acciones para restarle probabilidad a ese escenario y hacer un intento por alterar el futuro fatídico y transformarlo en uno deseable. Si revisamos nuevamente lo anterior y debatimos, encontraremos que entonces todo es posible y si es así, entonces parece que poco importa qué definamos primero (lo deseable o lo posible); Pero aún así, el orden planteado en la definición de Mojica es el más adecuado, pues podría ocurrir que mientras meditamos acerca de lo deseable, el tiempo transcurra acercándonos (probable y ya inevitablemente) a lo fatídico. Por ello, hay que ganar tiempo y determinar primero qué es lo probable (conservando la esperanza de que todo es posible).
