Download or read book The Bagel written by Maria Balinska and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2008-11-03 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A “scrumptious little book” about the cultural and historical background of this humble and hearty treat (The New York Times). If smoked salmon and cream cheese bring only one thing to mind, you can count yourself among the world’s millions of bagel mavens. But few people are aware of the bagel’s provenance, let alone its adventuresome history. This charming book tells the remarkable story of the bagel’s journey from the tables of seventeenth-century Poland to the freezers of middle America today, a story rooted in centuries of Polish, Jewish, and American history. Research in international archives and numerous personal interviews uncover the bagel’s links with the defeat of the Turks by Polish king Jan Sobieski in 1683, the Yiddish cultural revival of the late nineteenth century, and Jewish migration across the Atlantic to America. There the story moves from the bakeries of New York’s Lower East Side to the Bagel Bakers’ Local 388 Union of the 1960s, and the attentions of the mob. Maria Balinska weaves together a rich, quirky, and evocative history of East European Jewry—and the unassuming ring-shaped roll the world has taken to its heart. “Thought-provoking and fact-filled . . . Uses the bagel as a way of viewing Polish-Jewish history.” —The New York Times “Gives readers plenty to chew on . . . Thoroughly entertaining.” —The Wall Street Journal

Download or read book From Manhattan to Madison, the Long Way Around written by Eleanor Jacobs and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2008-03 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eleanor Jacobs went abroad for the first time when she sailed to Panama to marry a fellow New Yorker and moved to Guatemala. Eleanor describes in amusing detail her crash course in household management and socializing with friends of dictators. The war years were spent in Trinidad, New York and Washington and saw the birth of her only daughter. She spent two years in Bombay, India, at a time of political unrest before settling down in Panama City, Panama, to juggle the demands of wife and mother and eventually that of career woman. Widowed at 54, her daughter married, Eleanor was recruited to the Credit Union National Association (CUNA) executive team in Madison, Wisconsin. She returned to the US after living abroad for 27 years, but a medical condition forced an early retirement. Her health continued to be a major challenge, both physically and spiritually, and she discusses the challenges of these years thoughtfully and philosophically. She has lived in a continuing care community in Madison since 1990, retaining her involvement with CUNA while developing new interests. The essays she wrote in her creative writing classes form the basis of this memoir.

It also examines key intersecting agendas and themes, including political economy, security, race, gender, and material and electronic culture. Book excerpt: Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen has never been performed in Israel. Now, for the first time, the Israeli Government has decreed that, in keeping with the 2013 announcement of Tel Aviv’s being granted the 2020 Olympiad, and as a gesture of universal peace and forgiveness, Wagner’s Ring will be the key cultural event highlighting the games. Heinrich von Hoffmanstahl, the world’s greatest authority on the works of Wagner, an Austrian, has been engaged to conduct, and he has full authority to cast the singers. The Israeli Philharmonic will play with a huge international cast. Will the festival come off, or will powerful forces world-wide make another Munich out of the whole event? The PLO plots against it, as does the Hamas, the militant Islamic terrorist group and the Lebanese based Hezbollah. The clock ticks and the world waits.
