Book excerpt: Saint Gregory of Nazianzus stands as the founding father of the Byzantine religious synthesis, and his own conception of the vision of God as light made him an important figure for Byzantine spiritual writers. This study is a critical analysis of the man, his writings and inner life in the English language. It offers an insight into the mind of one of the greatest protagonists of Nicene theology and opens a window onto the world of late antiquity and the place of the Christian Church in it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An insider’s account of the Eastern Orthodox Church, from its beginning in the era of Jesus and the Apostles to the modern age In this short, accessible account of the Eastern Orthodox Church, John McGuckin begins by tackling the question “What is the Church?” His answer is a clear, historically and theologically rooted portrait of what the Church is for Orthodox Christianity and how it differs from Western Christians’ expectations. McGuckin explores the lived faith of generations, including sketches of some of the most important theological themes and individual personalities of the ancient and modern Church. He interweaves a personal approach throughout, offering to readers the experience of what it is like to enter an Orthodox church and witness its liturgy. In this astute and insightful book, he grapples with the reasons why many Western historians and societies have overlooked Orthodox Christianity and provides an important introduction to the Orthodox Church and the Eastern Christian World.

During its history, Orthodoxy has divided into independent national and social groupings, such as Syrian, Russian, Serbian, Bulgarian, Romanian, Greek and Georgian, all recognizing the primacy of the Patriarch of Constantinople. Other churches that variously refused to accept the decisions of the Coucils of Ephesus (431 AD) and Chalcedon (451 AD) are often referred to as the Eastern or Oriental Churches. They include the Coptic, Ethiopian, Armenian, Nestorian and several Syrian Churches. The Maronite and Uniate Churches, which recognize the primacy of Rome, are also known as Eastern Churches.

Bauslaugh brings together the scattered evidence testifying to neutral behavior among the Greek city-states and their non-Greek neighbors. Were the Argives of 480/479 B.C. really "Medizers," as many have accused, or were they pursuing a justifiable policy of neutrality as they claimed? On what basis in international law or custom did the Corcyraeans claim non-alignment? Why were the leading belligerent states willing to accept the inclusion of a "neutrality clause" in the Common Peace of 371? These questions have not been asked by historians of international law, and the answers provide a far more complex and sophisticated picture of interstate relations than has so far been available. Despite the absence of exclusively diplomatic language, the concept of respect for neutrals appears early in Greek history and remains a nearly constant feature of Classical wars. The problems confronting uncommitted states, which have clear parallels in modern history, were balanced by widespread acceptance of the need for limitations on the chaos of warfare.
