Dabei geht Benner mit dem Anspruch an sein Thema, die pädagogischen Professionen mit der pädagogischen Praxis und anderen Praxen zu konfrontieren und deren Beziehungen offen zu legen, und nicht, wie häufig geschehen, die Pädagogik isoliert zu betrachten, pädagogische Professionen auseinander zu differenzieren und losgelöst von anderen Bereichen zu betrachten. Benner benutzt bewusst den Terminus pädagogisches Denken und Handeln, um klar aufzuzeigen, dass für ihn Theorie und Praxis des Unterrichtens und Erziehens und des Nachdenkens darüber zusammenhängen und einander bedingen. Er stellt vier Prinzipien des pädagogischen Denken und Handelns vor, die er in konstitutive, also begründende bzw. grundlegende Prinzipien, und in regulative, somit steuernde und ausgleichende Prinzipien unterscheidet. Zu den konstitutiven Prinzipien gehören die Bildsamkeit und die Aufforderung zur Selbsttätigkeit, die hier noch weiter ausgeführt und behandelt werden, zu den regulativen Prinzipien gehört die Überführung gesellschaftlicher in pädagogische Determination sowie die „Ausrichtung der menschlichen Gesamtpraxis an der Aufgabe einer nicht-hierarchischen und nicht-teleologischen Verhältnisbestimmung der Einzelpraxen ausdifferenzierter Humanität“. Auf die erstgenannten, konstitutiven Prinzipien werde ich im folgenden näher eingehen.
