Book excerpt: This graduate project sought to create a workshop for parents inviting them to continue to participate in their student's academic career. A review of the literature on the developmental period of adolescence, student drop out, transition points, and parental involvement led to the creation of a one day orientation workshop for parents outlining what can be expected of them and their student at the high school level. The graduate project presented here aims to address the need for encouraging parental involvement at the high school level, as parents may be the key to student success.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What steps can be taken to assure that 8th graders make a successful transition to 9th grade? More students fail ninth grade than any other grade level. When middle school students took part in high school transition programs with a variety of different articulation activities, fewer students were retained in ninth grade. Ideally, these transition programs include activities that provide students and parents with current information about the new school, provide students with social support and opportunities for peer interaction during the transition, provide opportunities for parent involvement and bring middle school and high school personnel together to learn about one another's curriculum, special programs, requirements and expectations. School leaders can ease students' transition into high school by implementing transition programs that address the needs of students and their parents and that facilitate communication between middle school and high school teachers and support staff. Effective high school transition programs address the following key areas: (1) Providing parents and students with information about the new school; (2) Provide opportunities for peer interaction and social support; (3) Provide opportunities for parent involvement; (4) Provide opportunities for communication between middle and high school teachers and support staff; and (5) Provide academic support for incoming ninth graders. Book excerpt: This research focused on the tools and questions (detailed thoroughly in a toolkit via PowerPoint) that can be helpful for middle school individualized education plans (IEPs) when discussing high school placement (i.e., specialized academic instruction with students with mild/mod disabilities, special day class for students with mod/severe disabilities, functional academics course and like skills coursework). Graduation requirements and the types of high school general and special education classroom settings were thoroughly discussed throughout the literature review and in multiple chapters within this toolkit. Components stated in the Educational Specialist's toolkit to eight to nineth grade IEP transition meetings include the data or documentation that factored into recommendation for high school placement, how parents/families were involved in the process, case managing and prepping for an eight grade transition meeting, administrator support throughout the transition process, and baseline/questions asked by high school Educational Specialists at an eighth grade transition meeting. This toolkit also included guidance that the current middle school IEP team and perspective high school Educational Specialists can use throughout the entire eighth grade year of students with disabilities and create a transition plan when discussing least restrictive environment for the students in high school.

At risk students transitioning from 8th to 9th grade were identified and completed a self reporting survey of 14 questions regarding what they have as academic, social/emotional, and programmatic needs. Eighth grade teachers were also surveyed regarding what they saw as the student's academic, social/emotional and programmatic needs. Survey results concluded that that the identified students lack social and academic support and reported that the students would like more support from teachers. Students and teachers alike identified topics that would be helpful in a summer transition program, including how much homework to expect in high school, what classes to take, and the layout of the building.

Students experience a variety of changes upon entering high school, both developmentally and within their new contextual environment. When students are underprepared for the changes they encounter, the likelihood of dropping out of school is heightened. Transition programs have been shown to provide an effective solution to creating a responsive environment for the unique needs of first year high school students. Ensuring a smooth transition is particularly important for urban students in order to close the achievement gap between their higher socioeconomic status counterparts. This project reviews the participants, typical concerns of first year high school students, and the activities that have been proven to help foster a successful transition to high school. In addition, this project will compile the research explored to provide a comprehensive transition program that school counselors can implement at their school.

Book excerpt: National, state and local graduation and dropout rates have remained constant over recent years. While the reasons students dropout are complex, research is indicating that the transition from eight to ninth grade as the most crucial indicator of a students’ success. Further analysis has shown that transition programs may greatly benefit all students, and in particular, at-risk students effectively prepare for this crucial transition in to high school. Although the programs vary from one school district to the next, they all utilize collaborative teams of administrators, teachers and others that do everything to fully prepare students academically, teach personal management skills and help adjust to the social changes of high school which clearly illustrates the importance of students’ success. The project reviews the needs of ninth grade students, transition programs that have been or are currently being used by other school districts, and finally, provides school districts a manual to help guide the improvement or implementation of a transition program unique to their needs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Researchers have identified the transition from middle to high school as a critical point in teenagersâ educational development. Despite sweeping educational reforms, many students are leaving high school without graduating. Local school districts are struggling to redesign high schools to provide the educational programs necessary for at-risk studentsâ success. Creating smaller learning communities and developing transition programs have shown success in addressing these problems. Sustained research shows promise in minimizing the effects of the transition process and adds to the body of knowledge. A case study approach using archival data was used to explore the differences in three Bearcat âPRIDEâ treatment groups and their 8th (pre-treatment) and 9th (post-treatment) grade measures. Results of this study suggested students who participated in the Bearcat âPRIDEâ program showed greater success in academic performance, reduced disciplinary actions, increased school attendance, and participation in extra-curricular activities of their 8th (pre-treatment) and 9th (post-treatment) grade measures.

This book was released on 2014 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research has revealed important information about the importance of an effective transition program for eight grade students transitioning into high school. The increased rigor of high school courses, procedural struggles of a new environment, and increased social challenges often lead students to perform lower academically, turn to self-medication as a way to cope, and even drop out as a final result, when not given an effective transition into the high school. This project explores the components that are critical to a successful transition program. An effective transition program must begin to address students during the eighth grade year and continue into the ninth grade year. The components of this project have been identified by research as being an effective method of transition for students. The elements of this project are to be used as tools to execute a transition program that begins in eighth grade to address the academic challenges of high school, continues prior to the beginning of high school to address procedural and social challenges, and concludes during ninth grade to continue to support students with new academic challenges. If students feel completely supported during the transition from middle school to high school, students will be more successful in ninth grade and successive years of education.
