Download or read book All the Presidents' Gardens written by Marta McDowell and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2024-01-16 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This New York Times bestseller shares the rich history of the White House grounds, revealing how the story of the garden is also the story of America. The 18-acres surrounding the White House have been an unwitting witness to history—kings and queens have dined there, bills and treaties have been signed, and presidents have landed and retreated. Throughout it all, the grounds have remained not only beautiful, but also a powerful reflection of American trends. In All the Presidents' Gardens bestselling author Marta McDowell tells the untold history of the White House grounds with historical and contemporary photographs, vintage seeds catalogs, and rare glimpses into Presidential pastimes. History buffs will revel in the fascinating tidbits about Lincoln’s goats, Ike's putting green, Jackie's iconic roses, Amy Carter's tree house, and Trump's controversial renovations. Gardeners will enjoy the information on the plants whose favor has come and gone over the years and the gardeners who have been responsible for it all. As one head gardener put it, “What’s great about the job is that our trees, our plants, our shrubs, know nothing about politics.”
Book Synopsis Superheroes and Presidents: How Absurd Stories Have Poisoned the American Mind by : David Sinclair
Download or read book Superheroes and Presidents: How Absurd Stories Have Poisoned the American Mind written by David Sinclair and published by Magus Books. This book was released on with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conservatives see Donald Trump as Batman, the mighty crusader cleaning out "Gotham City" – the Swamp, the Deep State, the liberal elite. Liberals previously regarded Trump as the Joker, a psychotic maniac destroying America. However, since "Joker" – Todd Phillips' 2019 movie tour de force – the Joker is now seen as a liberal anti-hero, fighting the good fight against the super-rich elites. Batman, the sleazy playboy billionaire who stands for the military-industrial complex and predatory capitalism is now the psychotic monster who needs to be defeated. American culture is defined by the shifting sands of superheroes – comic book characters who rule a fantasy world – while China gets on with conquering the real world via its relentless progress in science, mathematics, engineering, computing and technology. Who will dominate the 21st century – the lazy illiterates that love superhero movies – or the hard-working strivers using their highly advanced knowledge to transform everything? America's love of fantasy is its doom. China's love of hard work and intelligence will sweep all before it. The Thucydides Trap is finally here – the USA is the declining power, being replaced by the rising power, China. No superheroes are coming to America's aid. They are up against 1.4 billion industrious high achievers, with the highest ambitions, and total certainty that the future is theirs. The dogs in the street know who's going to win this showdown. It's not Captain America, that's for sure.

Book excerpt: "In the course of human events there have always been those who deny or reject human freedom, but Americans will never falter in defending the fundamental truths of human liberty proclaimed on July 4, 1776. We will-we must-always hold these truths. The declared purpose of the President's Advisory 1776 Commission is to "enable a rising generation to understand the history and principles of the founding of the United States in 1776 and to strive to form a more perfect Union." This requires a restoration of American education, which can only be grounded on a history of those principles that is "accurate, honest, unifying, inspiring, and ennobling." And a rediscovery of ourshared identity rooted in our founding principles is the path to a renewed American unity and a confident American future"--

Book Synopsis Presidential Selection by : James W. Ceaser
Download or read book Presidential Selection written by James W. Ceaser and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 1979-06-21 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining the development of the process of presidential selection from the founding of the republic to the present day, James Ceaser contends that many of the major purposes of the selection system as it was formerly understood have been ignored by current reformers and modern scholars. In an attempt to reverse this trend, Professor Ceaser discusses the theories of selection offered by leading American statesmen from the Founders and Thomas Jefferson to Martin Van Buren and Woodrow Wilson. From these theories he identifies a set of criteria for a sound selection system that he then uses to analyze and evaluate the recent changes in the selection process. Five normative functions of a presidential selection system comprise the author's criteria: it should minimize the harmful effects of ambitious contenders for the office, promote responsible executive leadership and power, help secure an able president, ensure a legitimate accession, and provide for an appropriate amount of choice and change. Professor Ceaser finds that the present system is characterized by weak parties and candidate-centered campaigns that lead to the problems of "image" politics and demagogic leadership appeals. He therefore argues for a more republican selection system in which political parties would be strengthened to serve as a restraining force on popular authority, public opinion, and individual aspirations for executive power.
