Book excerpt: Sister Mary Jacalyn was a nun in German Village, Columbus, Ohio, in the 1800s. She was tried and convicted in the disappearance and deaths of over one hundred young girls. Now, in 2007, she has returned with vengeance in mind, and the towns of Columbus and Port Clinton will never be the same as the nun uses her otherworldly abilities to wreak havoc. Sister Mary has the power to alter and recreate a person’s reality as well as control people’s feelings. All over Columbus, residents are feeling her wrath. David, Deanne, and their friends have now returned but are in for a very personal touch. According to the nun, someone opened the portal that connects this world to hers, and they must fix it. Unless the portal is closed, she threatens to force David and his friends into realities of her own making, over and over. If the portal remains open, the group of friends will become lost to another world and another reality. Sister Mary has offered them a chance to end the madness; they must find a way to close the portal or be forever lost wandering the in-between.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A vivid recounting of WWII combat by a highly decorated soldier: “Few can match Buster in the description of his personal wartime actions and impressions.” —Filson Club History Quarterly He graduated from West Point in 1939, just in time to serve through one of the most crucial periods in national and world history. William R. Buster, born in Harrodsburg, Kentucky, knew a soldier’s combat experience—and left a firsthand account of it. His story tells of the incredible expansion, arming, and training of the US Army, as well as his experience in the great conflict itself, from North Africa and Sicily to the hedgerow country of Normandy, the Battle of the Bulge, and on to Berlin. For his service, he received the Silver Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Bronze Star, the Air Medal, and the French Croix de Guerre. Includes photographs “To my mind, this memoir rings as true as steel. Any combat soldier will recognize episodes and experiences recounted here . . . Anyone possessing a grain of empathy with the human being caught in the toils of war will find the story interesting in detail and moving in emotional effect.” —Charles P. Roland, Emeritus Professor of History, University of Kentucky

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As part of the Paris peace settlement imposed on a defeated Germany after the First World War, the inhabitants of three German borderland regions were to decide whether they wished to remain part of Germany. Plebiscites were held during 1920 and 1921 in areas of mixed ethnicity: Germans and Danes in Schleswig, Germans and Poles in the districts of Allenstein and Marienwerder and in Upper Silesia. In this work, T. Hunt Tooley examines the German attempt to influence the outcome in Upper Silesia in March 1921?within the constraints of the Treaty of Versailles, which forbade the national states involved to make such attempts. We see the first international effort of a defeated Germany, acting through the new Weimar government, to face issues concerning the definition of the new national state, of citizenship, and of what it meant to be German. ø National Identity and Weimar Germany thereby contributes to our understanding of the Weimar period, which has been intensely scrutinized for clues to its fall and the consequent rise of Nazism. Seeing Upper Silesia as a laboratory for the question of German self-identity, Tooley also provides the valuable corrective that Silesians often voted as much in response to local and contingent issues as in response to ethnic identification.
