Book Synopsis Hinge Pictures by : Andrea Andersson
Download or read book Hinge Pictures written by Andrea Andersson and published by Siglio Press. This book was released on 2019-04-23 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1960 George Heard Hamilton published the first complete typographic translation of Duchamp's Green Box in English. This landmark publication translated Duchamp's notes and conceptual ambitions for his masterwork, The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors, Even. And as a book, designed to hinge at its binding, the work fulfilled Duchamp's conceptual proposal for art that would move from two- into three-dimensional space. Hinge Pictures is an artist's book in eight parts--a gorgeous, palimpsestual publication that layers the practices of Sarah Crowner, Julia Dault, Leslie Hewitt, Tomashi Jackson, Erin Shirreff, Ulla von Brandenburg, Adriana Varejão and Claudia Wieser over the pages of Duchamp's imagination. It is also a companion publication to an exhibition in eight parts, a confrontation with the patrimony of European modernism. A literal reading of Duchamp positions the Bride, a nude woman, suspended above a host of ogling bachelors. In his writing, Duchamp narrates both social and physical constraint ("The Bride accepts this stripping...") and formal liberation ("discover true form...develop the principle of the hinge."). The artists of Hinge Pictures use formal constraint--a commitment to abstraction--in a demonstration of social liberation. With a Swiss binding that unveils the spine of the book and multiple vellum overlays that create layered interlocutions, the book's physical qualities mirror its conceptual occupations.
Book Synopsis 28 Artists & 2 Saints by : Joan Acocella
Download or read book 28 Artists & 2 Saints written by Joan Acocella and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2008-02-12 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is a dazzling collection from Joan Acocella, one of our most admired cultural critics: thirty-one essays that consider the life and work of some of the most influential artists of our time (and two saints: Joan of Arc and Mary Magdalene). Acocella writes about Primo Levi, Holocaust survivor and chemist, who wrote the classic memoir, Survival in Auschwitz; M.F.K. Fisher who, numb with grief over her husband’s suicide, dictated the witty and classic How to Cook a Wolf; and many other subjects, including Dorothy Parker, Mikhail Baryshnikov, and Saul Bellow. Twenty-Eight Artists and Two Saints is indispensable reading on the making of art—and the courage, perseverance, and, sometimes, dumb luck that it requires.

Download or read book Franz West written by Eva Badura-Triska and published by Walther Konig Verlag. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus of this publication is Franz West's (1947-2012) Kombi-Werke installations, in which greatly differing individual pieces are brought together and then recomposed into new works. Gathering elements such as fittings, furniture, sculpture, videos and works on paper from all periods--and even works made by artist friends--into grand ensembles, the Kombi-Werke are without doubt key elements in West's legacy. An example is the three-part papier-mâché sculpture "Redundanz" its starting point is the gouache "Lost Weight" (1994), with its motif of a dieting woman showing her oversized pants. Omitting the "W," West transforms "Lost Weight" into "Lost Eight," in order to derive the title for a larger work, "Where Is my Eight?" With 250 color illustrations, this substantial and inspiring volume, and the exhibition it accompanies, were overseen by the artist himself, before his death in the summer of 2012.

Download or read book This is Tomorrow written by Michael Bird and published by Thames & Hudson. This book was released on 2022-09-08 with total page 499 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In This is Tomorrow Michael Bird takes a fresh look at the long twentieth century, from the closing years of Queen Victorias reign to the turn of the millennium, through the lens of the artists who lived and worked in this ever-changing Britain. Bird examines how the rhythms of change and adaptation in art became embedded in the collective consciousness of the nation and vividly evokes the personalities who populate and drive this story, looking beyond individual careers and historical moments to weave together interconnecting currents of change that flowed through London, Glasgow, Leeds, Cornwall, the Caribbean, New York, Moscow and Berlin. From the American James McNeill Whistlers defence of his new kind of modern art against the British art establishment in the latter half of the 19th century to the Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliassons melting icebergs in London, he traverses the lives of the artists that have recorded, questioned and defined our times. At the heart of this original book are the successive waves of displacement caused by global wars and persecution that conversely brought fresh ideas and new points of view to the British Isles; educational reforms opened new routes for young people from working-class backgrounds; movements of social change enabled the emergence of female artists and artists of colour; and the emergence of the mass media shaped modern modes of communication and culture. These are the ebbs and flows that Michael Bird teases out in this panoramic account of Britain and its artists in across the twentieth century.

Download or read book Seen Not Heard written by Ilona Zsolnay and published by Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures. This book was released on 2023-04-10 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditionally, writing--a graphic, multidimensional form of communication--has been approached as a vehicle for representing, and therefore conveying, the spoken word. Moving beyond this manner of analysis, this volume interrogates writing as a medium that is not simply a handmaiden to oral and aural exchange but a communication system that is richly layered and experienced. To exploit this aspect of visual code, scholars from the fields of Egyptology, Sinology, Hittitology, and Assyriology, together with Mesoamericanists, art historians, and a sign language specialist, are brought together in this volume. In its pages, these contributors incorporate into their analyses methods more commonly used in linguistics and semiotics, communication studies, art historical analysis, and traditional philology to new ends in order to form original trajectories of inquiry. Each contribution either lays bare explicit exploitation of visuality in scribal production as a means to cement power, reveal the mystical, induce humor, or expose clandestine views or it locates implicit knowledge schemes and cultural maps underlying and informing these same productions. The pioneering investigations presented in Seen Not Heard reveal that although writing may be heard, the fact that it can also be seen affects its reception and therefore the meaning of any transported phonological units.
