Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The spatial properties of the optical field and hence the performance of a free electron laser depend on the fact that the electron beam, which acts as both an amplifying and a refractive medium, is transversely nonuniform. Under certain circumstances, optical guiding may be realized, where the optical field is stably confined near the electron beam and amplified along the beam over many Rayleigh ranges. We show that the three-dimensional evolution of the optical field through the interaction region can be determined by a guided mode expansion before saturation. Optical guiding occurs when the fundamental growing mode becomes dominant. The guided mode expansion is made possible by implementing the biorthogonality of the eigenmodes of the coupled electron-beam-optical-wave system. The eigenmodes are found to be of vectorial form with three components; one specifies the guided optical mode and the other two describe the density and the energy modulations of the electron beam.

Book excerpt: The coherent interaction between an optical wave and an electron beam in a free electron laser (FEL) is shown to be capable of optically guiding the light. The effect is analyzed using a two-dimensional approximation for the FEL equations, and using the properties of optical fibers. Results of two-dimensional (cylindrically symmetric) numerical simulations are presented, and found to agree reasonably well with the analytically derived criterion for guiding. Under proper conditions, the effect can be large and has important applications to short wavelength FEL's and to directing intense light.
Book Synopsis Eigenmode Analysis of a High-gain Free-electron Laser Based on a Transverse Gradient Undulator by :

This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here, the use of a transverse gradient undulator (TGU) is viewed as an attractive option for free-electron lasers (FELs) driven by beams with a large energy spread. By suitably dispersing the electron beam and tilting the undulator poles, the energy spread effect can be substantially mitigated. However, adding the dispersion typically leads to electron beams with large aspect ratios. As a result, the presence of higher-order modes in the FEL radiation can become significant. To investigate this effect, we study the eigenmode properties of a TGU-based, high-gain FEL, using both an analytically-solvable model and a variational technique. Our analysis, which includes the fundamental and the higher-order FEL eigenmodes, can provide an estimate of the mode content for the output radiation. This formalism also enables us to study the trade-off between FEL gain and transverse coherence. Numerical results are presented for a representative soft X-ray, TGU FEL example.

This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, the free-electron laser (FEL) has demonstrated its value as a tunable source of bright, coherent radiation with photon energies up to the X-ray region. For such short radiation wavelengths, three-dimensional (3D) effects (due to diffraction, emittance and focusing) become significant and must be taken into consideration. In this work, we present a systematic, fully 3D theoretical formalism applicable to a range of concepts for compact, high-gain FELs. These include novel schemes involving the use of transverse gradient (TGU) or laser undulators. Our approach utilizes either a standard eigenmode analysis for constant-parameter systems or a non-eigenmode expansion technique in terms of orthogonal transverse modes for cases where the parameters of the electron beam and/or the undulator vary along the longitudinal direction. The results we obtain fully characterize the system (electron beam and radiation) in the linear regime of the interaction and are shown to be in excellent agreement with simulation. Moreover, the formalism developed here can be used in comprehensive, theory-based optimization studies, with significant applications in FEL design.

Book Synopsis Exact and Variational Solutions of 3D Eigenmodes in High Gain FELs [Exact and Variational Solutions of 3D Eigenmodes in High Gain Free Electron Lasers]. by :
Download or read book Exact and Variational Solutions of 3D Eigenmodes in High Gain FELs [Exact and Variational Solutions of 3D Eigenmodes in High Gain Free Electron Lasers]. written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exact solution and variational approximation of eigenmodes in high gain FELs are presented. These eigenmodes specify transverse profiles and exponential growth rates of the laser field before saturation. They are self-consistent solutions of coupled Maxwell-Vlasov equations describing FEL interaction taking into account the effects due to energy spread, emittance and betatron oscillations of the electron beam, as well as diffraction and optical guiding of the laser field. A new formalism of scaling is introduced and based on which solutions in various limiting cases are discussed. Additionally, a fitting formula is obtained from interpolating the variational solution for quick calculation of exponential growth rate of the fundamental mode.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The optical field in free electron lasers can sometimes develop sidebands and exhibit very complex behavior. The purpose of this report is to develop a two mode model of the optical field in a free electron laser in which the optical modes are coupled by the free electrons in the laser. This model may be used to study the long term stability of the optical wave and the development of sidebands in the optical field. In this report the equations of motion governing the interaction of an electron with the optical modes will be derived. Free electron lasers, Optical wave.

Book Synopsis Collective Effects on the Operation of Free Electron Lasers with an Axial Guide Field by : H. P. Freund
Download or read book Collective Effects on the Operation of Free Electron Lasers with an Axial Guide Field written by H. P. Freund and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collective interaction in a free electron laser with combined helical wiggler and uniform axial guide fields is presented in the linearized regime. The analysis involves a perturbation of the Vlasov-Maxwell equations about the constant-velocity helical trajectories, and the general driving currents are derived for this configuration. The complete dispersion equation is then obtained for a monoenergetic beam. Analytic solutions are obtained in the strong pump and a space-charge dominated regimes, and an extensive numerical analysis is presented for a wide range of operating parameters. The results indicate that substantial enhancements in the gain are possible when the relativistic axial gyrofrequency is comparable to the Free Electron Laser Doppler Upshift. In addition, there is a range of parameters for which the ponderomotive potential acts to destabilize the electron beam. In this regime, we find both unstable electrostatic beam modes and largely electromagnetic modes with broad bandwidths. (Author).
Book Synopsis Optical Guiding in the Separable Beam Limit by : T. M Antonsen (Jr)
Download or read book Optical Guiding in the Separable Beam Limit written by T. M Antonsen (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nonlinear theory of optical guiding in an Free Electron Laser Amplifier is developed for the case in which the spatial dependence of the current source term in the wave equation can be separated into the product of a function of radius and a function of axial distance. Such a separation can be motivated if either the betatron wavelength is shorter than other lengths of interest (synchrotron wavelength, vacuum Rayleigh length) or if the radiation waist exceeds the beam radius. In this limit with the choice of a Gaussian profile for the electron beam density the wave equation can be solved exactly and the radiation field felt by the particles can be expressed as a one dimensional convolution of the current source. With the given expression for the radiation field, the equations of motion can be solved in the trapped particle regime. Requiring consistency between the particle motion and the fields yields expressions describing nonlinear guided states. The adiabatic evolution of these guided states in the presence of a tapered wiggler is determined by conservation of the electrons action and total (field + electron beam) energy. Using these relations the growth of the radiation waist as the beam is decelerated can be calculated.
