Book excerpt: In the last days of 1917, Russia declared that it had uncovered a plot by the American ambassador to undermine the new Lenin and Trotsky revolutionary regime. It was a scandal of immense proportions at the time, yet one that has been all but forgotten. As has one of the primary players: Colonel Raymond Robins, then head of the American Red Cross in Russia, who became a minor celebrity thanks to his role in events in Moscow. Who was Raymond Robins? What had he done-or not done-to compel one high-ranking Russian revolutionary to say, as quoted in The New York Times in June 1920: "All the foreigners and Americans were against us except Raymond Robins. He was the only true and faithful friend we had among the foreigners and he was the only one who understood our aims and fully sympathized with us..." This obscure but captivating work, first published in 1920, reads like a political thriller in its illumination of one of the most mysterious events in 20th century history. WILLIAM HARD (1878-1962) also wrote Theodore Roosevelt, A Tribute (1899) and The Women of Tomorrow (1911).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1917 and 1920 - from the Bolshevik revolution to the definitive statement of American opposition to Bolshevik Russia - Soviets and Americans searched for ways to effect meaningful interactions between their two nations in the absence of formal diplomatic relations. During these years, wide-ranging discussions occurred on a variety of serious issues, from military collaboration and economic relations to the comprehensive settlement of political and military disputes. At the same time, extensive debates took place in both countries about the nature of the relations between them. Based on research in Soviet archives as well as previously unused private collections and government archives in the United States and Great Britain, Alternative Paths shows that a surprising number of concrete agreements were reached between the two countries. These included continued operation of the American Red Cross in Russia, the transfer of war materials from the Russian army to the Americans, the sale of strategic supplies of platinum from the Bolsheviks to the United States, and the exemption of a number of American corporations from Soviet government nationalization decrees. A timely reevaluation of Soviet-American relations in a post-Cold War era, this book tells the story of the "roads not taken" - an area in history hitherto underemphasized because it did not immediately succeed, but is still of key interest to Soviet, American, and international relations historians.

Through Poole's perspective, a key figure in U.S.-Soviet relations, this book sheds new light on the Russian Revolution and World War I.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1919 the Soviet government directed Ludwig Martens to open a trade bureau in New York. Before his deportation two years later, Martens had established contact with nearly one thousand American firms and conducted trade in the face of a stiff Allied embargo. His work planted the seeds for growing commercial ties between the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. throughout the 1920s. Because the United States did not recognize the Soviet Union until 1933, historians have viewed the early Soviet–American relationship as an ideological stand-off. Katherine Siegel, drawing on public, private, and corporate documents as well as newly opened Soviet archives, paints a different picture. She finds that business ties flourished between 1923 and 1930, American sales to the Soviets grew twentyfold and American firms supplied Russians with more than a fourth of their imports. American businesses were only too eager to tap into huge Soviet markets. Under the Soviets' New Economic Policy and first Five Year Plan, American firms invested in the U.S.S.R. and sold technical processes, provided consulting services, built factories, and trained Soviet engineers in the U.S. Most significantly, Siegel shows, this commercial relationship encouraged policy shifts at the highest levels of the U.S. government. Thus when Franklin D. Roosevelt opened diplomatic relations with Russia, he was building on ties that had been carefully constructed over the previous fifteen years. Siegel's study makes an important contribution to a new understanding of early Soviet-American relations.
