The main objective of the insurance sector reforms was to increase the efficiency and productivity of the insurance sector. In India, the market share of public insurance companies has been challenged in recent years by a variety of forces - from Internet disintermediation to aggressive marketing by new entrants, financial services deregulation, compliance pressure and competition from other investment vehicles. It is essential to study whether these reforms provided the desired results. The study attempts to compare the efficiency of Indian public sector general insurance companies during the pre- and post-reform periods. The study is mainly based on the secondary data and assesses the effect of reforms on the efficiency of the public sector general insurance companies. A comparison has been made of all the four public sector general insurance companies during the pre- and post-reform period. The pre-reform period includes 1993-94 to 1999-00, and the post-reform period includes 2000-01 to 2007-08. To evaluate the efficiency, Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) approach has been used. The results reveal that the efficiency of the public sector general insurance companies is higher in the post-reform period than the pre-reform period.

Book excerpt: Despite the rising presence of private players after the enactment of the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) Act in 1999, the four major public sector general insurance firms in India, namely, the National Insurance Company Limited, Oriental Insurance Company Limited, New India Assurance Company Limited and the United India Insurance Company Limited continued to dominate the Indian general insurance sector with a collective market share of 50.24% at the end of the FY 2014-15. However, the significant decline in the market shares of the state-owned general insurers, with an abrupt rise in the footfall of private players, has eventually raised concerns about their operational efficiency and productivity growth in the country's general insurance sector. The present study addresses the efficiency and productivity issues of the four major public sector general insurance firms in India against the backdrop of the US financial crisis of 2007-08. The study applies the nonparametric Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to evaluate the technical and scale efficiency scores along with total factor productivity changes of the four public sector non-life insurance companies during the post-deregulation study period from 2008-09 to 2014-15. The results of the study show United India Insurance Company as the most technically and scale efficient player, whereas the National Insurance Company was found to be the most productive player among the public sector general insurance firms during the period.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is well known that the overall insurance sector in India has been undergoing a series of reforms from time to time. The drastic change that re-designed the contours of the industry is the implementation of the Malhotra Committee Recommendations which opened up the landscape to the private non-life insurers in 2000. The present study has been taken up to determine the efficiency of the non-life sector and the insurers using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). The empirical research also aims to statistically test whether there is any year-wise significant difference between the two sectors in respect of the overall efficiency. For the purpose, appropriate statistical test is applied. The study is based on secondary data collected from the Insurance Regulatory Authority of India (IRDA) Annual Reports. The sample size for this study is twelve including all the four insurers from the public sector and the remaining from the private sector. The results of the analysis showed that in terms of technical and pure technical efficiency, the overall result of the public sector surpasses that of the private. However, the findings of the Mann-Whitney U Test revealed that the result with respect to the statistical difference is mixed.

Book excerpt: The present study compares 12 general insurance companies in India in respect of technical and scale efficiencies, in addition to their Total Factor Productivity (TFP) scores, in a two output-two input framework for the period 2006-07 to 2015-16 using the non-parametric Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and Malmquist TFP index. The results revealed that the observed public sector general insurers exhibited higher mean technical efficiency and scale efficiency scores than the sampled private sector general insurers, when 'net premiums earned' and 'income from investments' were considered as output indicators covering all the years of the study period, both under the assumptions of constant returns to scale and variable returns to scale. But a comparison of the TFP scores reflected a marginally higher mean TFP growth rate in favor of the observed private sector general insurers than their public sector counterparts, in respect of both the output indicators over the study period.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regardless of where we live, the management of the public sector impacts on our lives. Hence, we all have an interest, one way or another, in the achievement of efficiency and productivity improvements in the activities of the public sector. For a government agency that provides a public service, striving for unreasonable benchmark targets for efficiency may lead to a deterioration of service quality, along with an increase in stress and job dissatisfaction for public sector employees. Slack performance targets may lead to gross inefficiency, poor quality of service, and low self-esteem for employees. In the case of regulation, inappropriate policies can lead to unprecedented disasters. Examples include the decimation of fish stocks through mismanagement of fisheries, and power blackouts through inappropriate restrictions on electricity generators and distributors. Efficient taxation policies minimise the tax bill for citizens. In all of these cases, efficient management is required, although it is often unclear how to assess this efficiency. In this volume, several authors consider various aspects and contexts of performance measurement. Hence, this volume represents a unique collection of advances in efficiency assessment for the public sector by leading researchers in the field. Efficiency in the Public Sector is divided into two sections. The first is titled "Issues in Public Sector Efficiency Evaluation" and comprises of chapters 1-4. The second section is titled "Efficiency Analysis in the Public Sector - Advances in Theory and Practice." This division is somewhat arbitrary, in the sense there are significant overlapping themes in both sections. However, it serves to separate chapters that can be characterised as dealing with broader issues (Section I), from chapters that can be characterised as focusing on specific theoretical problems and empirical cases (Section II).

Book excerpt: The present study pertains to analysis and projection of growth and performance of General Insurance Sector in India. The major focus of the study is to evaluate the role of the Government in regulating the insurance industry and on the growth and performance and marketing strategies. The analysis revealed that the general Insurance penetration in India is very low as compared to international standards in general and in rural sector in particular. Liberalization of this sector has contributed a lot of opportunities for the growth of the rural market. The study found that the employees of the private sector insurance companies are more acquainted with the application of information and communication system than those from public sector firms, and consumers have less choice of products in the absence of tailor-made products to suit different categories of people. The private sector insurance companies are more cost-effective. The study will contribute to enhance the present knowledge in the field of insurance. The study recommends that the insurance regulatory and development authority should give more thrust on quality, service and discipline by insurers and related agencies.

It provides a brief overview of the insurance industry and reviews the risks it faces, as well as several recent failures of insurance companies that had systemic implications. Assimilation of banking-type activities by life insurers appears to be the key systemic vulnerability. Building on this experience and the experience gained under the FSAP, the paper proposes key indicators that should be compiled and used for surveillance of financial soundness of insurance companies and the insurance sector as a whole.

Book excerpt: Any enquiry into the nature, performance, role, demerits, growth, efficiency, or other aspects of financial services such as banking and insurance activities, requires rigorous estimates of their economic output, i.e., the economic contributions made by these firms, as well as by the industries as a whole. Accordingly, this book condenses several theoretical, methodological, empirical, and philosophical issues in conceptualizing, measuring, and empirically operationalizing the economic output of the banking and insurance industries. The analytical focus is on both Global and Emerging Markets perspectives. The book synthesizes applied and conceptual evidence to locate the chosen theme's analytical patterns, consensus, and disagreements. The selected subject matter is studied within the firm-level and aggregate settings, bringing literature of varied scopes together. Contributions from various international academics, practitioners, and policymakers further enrich the narrative. The book concludes with data-driven case studies that analyze the extent to which the critical performance parameters of the banking and insurance industries in the BRIICS economies – including estimation of aggregate industry-level partial factor productivities, total factor productivity, technical efficiency, and returns to scale – vary concerning alternate measures of their output. The present work also provides a brief note on the inputs measurement dimension, following which there is a discussion on the limitations, future scope, and conclusions. This work will be valuable for researchers and policymakers undertaking performance analyses related to banking and insurance activities. It shall provide them with the examination of a plethora of analytical options and related issues on the theory and praxis of output measurement, all finely organized into one single volume.

Book excerpt: Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2020 in the subject Business economics - Banking, Stock Exchanges, Insurance, Accounting, grade: A, , course: Minor Research, language: English, abstract: This study is necessary to understand the position of insurance sector in Latur district and perception of the general public towards insurance industry and its products as compared to other parts of Maharashtra. People residing in rural and urban area; view differently for the same service that has been provided by the insurance company. This difference of thinking or attitude is due to their income level, standard of living, education, knowledge about industry etc. People irrespective of living in any area can have any type of insurance products or service, but generally rural people look towards insurance as investment and urban as protection or safeguard against loss to life or property. So the rural people believe in such product which will give them lump sum amount at the maturity of the policy. But the urban people believe that insurance should protect them or their family after any bad or unfortunate incident happens with them. It means that the Ϯςͮ Minor Research Project / Dr. B. T. Chavan urban people use to take such insurance policies which will provide huge lump sum amount after the loss to life to the remaining family members. Latur district is situated in the south eastern part of Marathwada region of Maharashtra state. Insurance generally operates on the premise of uncertain future and as such its promotion and development depends mostly on the ability of insurers in assessing the real uncertainties of life of the insured. Insurance provides payment for unexpected losses to individual’s family and business firms, allowing their activities to continue smoothly despite unfavorable and unfortunate events. An insurer’s reputation is evaluated mainly on his ability to fulfill his promise when the insured needs it. The life insurance industry also plays an important role in the mobilization of household and corporate savings and promoting investment activity. This industry provides for efficient and productive allocation of capital resources, thus facilitates growth and development of an economy. The life insurance industry in India, with LIC and 23 private sector players, has been playing a major role in performing some insurance functions of Society.

Care Without Coverage examines the real consequences for adults who lack health insurance. The study presents findings in the areas of prevention and screening, cancer, chronic illness, hospital-based care, and general health status. The committee looked at the consequences of being uninsured for people suffering from cancer, diabetes, HIV infection and AIDS, heart and kidney disease, mental illness, traumatic injuries, and heart attacks. It focused on the roughly 30 million-one in seven-working-age Americans without health insurance. This group does not include the population over 65 that is covered by Medicare or the nearly 10 million children who are uninsured in this country. The main findings of the report are that working-age Americans without health insurance are more likely to receive too little medical care and receive it too late; be sicker and die sooner; and receive poorer care when they are in the hospital, even for acute situations like a motor vehicle crash.
