Cet instrument, dont un prototype a été développé au LOA, mesure la polarisation et la bidirectionnalité du rayonnement solaire rediffusé. Il a été retenu sur les plates formes polaires de l'ESA et de la NASDA. Deux thèmes principaux sont abordés: l'étalonnage en vol des capteurs, indispensable pour remonter à des données radiométriques significatives, et la déconvolution des effets de surface et d'atmosphère, nécessaire à l'interprétation des variations temporelles des signaux observés. La simulation du signal est réalisée à partir du code radiatif 5s, amélioré au cours de cette thèse dans une nouvelle version (6s) afin de répondre aux objectifs des thèmes abordés. L'originalité de l'étude de l'étalonnage en vol est la réalisation de bilans d'erreur detaillés essentiels à la crédibilité, à l'amélioration et à la comparaison des méthodes proposées. On montre que sur le site français de la CRAU, la qualité de l'étalonnage peut être aussi bonne qu'à White Sands (New Mexico usa), site utilisé par P. N. Slater pour étalonner en routine la plupart des capteurs existants. On montre aussi les performances prometteuses d'une méthode d'étalonnage sur la diffusion moléculaire, étudiée pour spot 4, validée sur spot 1 et retenue pour polder. Pour le second thème, dans le cas d'observations sur terres émergées, on définit une méthode opérationnelle d'obtention d'un standard de comparaison des données satellites, généralisable à tout instrument et associé à un bilan d'erreur fin; sur mer on analyse les performances d'un algorithme de couleur de l’océan capable de restituer la réflectance de l’eau à 0,01 près dans les situations les plus réalistes possibles. Le travail effectué fournit des éléments directement applicables à l’analyse des données POLDER. Un prolongement possible est l’inversion des aérosols sur la végétation.
