Book excerpt: Effective reading interventions for students with specific learning disabilities (SLD) are needed. A multiprobe multiple baseline across participants design was used to evaluate the effects of a video self-modeling intervention (VSM) on reading fluency skills. The VSM intervention’s effects on self-efficacy were also measured. Four male middle school students with SLD watched a pre-recorded video of themselves reading a passage fluently and were then asked to read another passage. Words correct per minute (WCPM) and accuracy data were taken. Results showed that students read significantly more words correct when they watched themselves read the same passage they were about to read. This study shows that having students watch videos of themselves read, especially if they watch the same passage they will read afterwards, is easy to implement, cost-effective, and worth further investigation.

Book excerpt: The purpose of the study was to investigate the efficacy of video self-modeling in delivering a Story Mapping intervention with the purpose of increasing reading comprehension, vocabulary, and self-efficacy. Participants were split amongst three treatment groups: Video Self-Modeling, Didactic, and Control group. The video self-modeling group was delivered the story map intervention through a video the researcher created. The video showed the student successfully completing the story map. Students in this treatment group watched their videos once a day throughout the intervention phase of the study. Students in the didactic group received instruction on the story map directly from a teacher. Finally, students in the control group read silently during this time. Reading comprehension was measured utilizing the Dibels Daze curriculum based measure and WJ-IV Achievement Reading Comprehension cluster (Mather & Wendling, 2014, Riedel, 2007). Self-efficacy was broadly explored utilizing the Motivations for Reading Questionnaire (Wigfield &Guthrie, 1997). Results suggest that the VSM intervention was mildly effective in increasing reading comprehension for three out of seventeen participants. In regard to vocabulary, results did not reveal a significant increase post intervention. In addition, qualitative data gathered through the Motivations for Reading Questionnaire indicated participants in the VSM group experienced an increase in self-efficacy. Overall, the video self-modeling intervention showed potential to increase student’s reading comprehension and self-efficacy.

This study evaluated the impact of video self-modeling (VSM) on oral reading fluency in four upper elementary students at-risk for failing in reading. A multiple-baseline design across participants was used to evaluate the outcomes of the VSM intervention. The results indicate that VSM may have a positive impact on reading fluency of students at-risk for reading failure; the use of VSM was positively associated with increases in reading fluency in three of the four participants. The participant for whom VSM alone did not result in substantial reading gains needed an additional repeated reading intervention to improve fluency. Generalization occurred for all participants and some evidence of maintenance was noted in three participants. Social validity surveys indicated high acceptability of the VSM intervention by study participants.

The participants were 10-year-old male students, and they were enrolled in 4th or 5th grade. All of the participants carry disabilities, including Autism Spectrum Disorder or Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. 2 participants participated in the study in a clinic setting, and one participant participated in the study in a school setting. Before attending the intervention sessions, the participants attended pre-participation assessment sessions to evaluate if their current reading skills and behavioral repertoire met the purposes of the current study. Following the screening procedures, the participants participated in the baseline measurements, video developments, alternating treatments phase, confirmatory phase, and follow-up phase. The results indicated the stand-alone Video Self-Modeling was efficacious for 2 out of 3 participants, and the Video Self-Modeling as a supplemental intervention component showed its efficacy for 1 participant. The findings showed various practical implications. Limitations and future studies are also discussed.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to offer an additional strategy and teaching tool for emergent readers in secondary educational settings. The intervention being utilized is feedforward audio self-modelling (FFASM). Since the 1970s, studies have shown video self-modelling (VSM) to be an effective tool in improving behaviour. It is a strength-based technique used to increase skills in children and youth with or without disabilities. Although it has gained a solid evidence base, it is not common in educational settings (Collier et al., 2012). There have been numerous studies on its effectiveness in various settings, on a variety of skills, with participants of different ages. A problem area in middle school regarding reading is the lack of effective response to intervention (RTI) strategies that increase students' motivation, fluency, and comprehension. Albert Bandura's work on modelling is the theoretical foundation upon which VSM is built. In addition to Bandura, Peter Dowrick has been researching VSM for over 30 years. His work on self-modelling theory and the ability for humans to imagine future situations adds to the theoretical explanation for the overall effectiveness of VSM. This study is the first to use FFASM to increase reading achievement through an online setting. This study used a single-subject experimental design to examine the effects of feedforward audio self-modelling on reading fluency, comprehension, and reader self-perception. Results of the study indicate that FFASM may have a positive effect on reading fluency and comprehension. It may have the potential to assist all learners, not just emergent readers. In addition, the study was mainly viewed favourably by participants and parents. Future research in this area should consider including a vocabulary component.

Book excerpt: Video self-modeling has been found to be effective in increasing appropriate behaviors, increasing task fluency, and decreasing inappropriate behaviors. During video self-modeling, a student is filmed completing a task and then mistakes, prompts, and negative behaviors are edited from the video. When the edited video is viewed by the subject student, the student views a perfect model of him or herself successfully completing the given task. Video self-modeling has been used predominately with participants with autism spectrum disorder. This study is a replication of a previous study in which the effectiveness of video self-modeling and video peer modeling was compared (Sherer, Paredes, Kisacky, Ingersoll, & Schreiman, 2001). Sherer et al. evaluated these procedures with high functioning students with autism using a combined multiple baseline across participants and alternating treatment design. This study differs from Sherer et al.[alpha]s study in its use of participants who have multiple disabilities and low cognitive functioning. The results show that video self-modeling is effective for some participants while video peer modeling is effective for others. The individual student[alpha]s preference for one form of video modeling over another form may indicate the method that is best for a particular participant. Implications for further research are included.

Book excerpt: Ten first grade students, participating in a Tier ii response to intervention (rti) reading program received an intervention of video self modeling to improve decoding skills and sight word recognition. The students were video recorded blending and segmenting decodable words, and reading sight words taken directly from their curriculum instruction. Individual videos were recorded and edited to show students successfully and accurately decoding words and practicing sight word recognition. Each movie was two minutes or less and included 5 decoding segments and 5 new sight words. Decodable words were selected for each student based upon identified decoding deficits assessed weekly. Sight words were selected based upon the upcoming set of words in each student's rti instruction lesson. Viewing of the video self-modeling movies occurred 4 times per week prior to rti instruction. Data were collected twice per week using curriculum-based measures that included decodable and sight words printed in black and white on index cards and the Dibels Nonsense Word Fluency (nwf) assessment. A single subject multiple baseline across participants design was used. Preand post-test measures included the Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark Assessment, the Basic Phonics Skills Test, the Systematic Instruction in Phoneme Awareness, Phonics, and Sight Words Assessment and the standardized Woodcock-Johnson iii subtests: Word Attack and Letter Word Identification. Results indicated an increase in decoding skills and sight word recognition for all participants. A two-week post-test maintenance assessment showed that 70% of the participants retained their highest decoding and sight word recognition skill levels or further increased their scores. The remaining 30% scored lower than their highest score but still remained above baseline. All 10 students improved their nwf scores from baseline to maintenance indicating a generalization of skills. Treatment integrity and inter-observer reliability were established with an equal rating of 98%. Social validity was recorded on video through an interview process that addressed both student and teacher feelings about the use of video self-modeling to improve reading skills and reading in general. Results from the study offer promise of an early response, specific intervention that may reach particular students who struggle with Tier ii reading instruction. Individuals with low hope levels are more likely to have difficulties across their physical, psychological, and social environments. Even though the concept of hope and interventions to improve it had been developed since the mid 1990's, there has been very little if any research that has developed video self modelling (VSM) intervention specifically designed to change hope within individuals. This study involved five undergraduate students who showed low levels of hope in standardised tests. Hope scales include hope in general (Hope Scale) and hope in six specific domains including family, romantic, social, academic, work, and leisure (Domain Specific Hope Scale). An activity was chosen by the participants and related to the domains, for example, exercise (leisure domain), reading a book (academic domain), or other activities or skills. The intervention was the construction of a video-recording showing the participants successfully carrying out their target activities which they watched every day for a week. The findings of this study supported the probability that VSM may generate an indirect effect on the enhancement of hope. All participants showed increases in the frequency of their chosen activities and improvements in most of the related hope scores. Therefore, VSM may be an appropriate intervention to help those with low hope to achieve their goals and improve their hopefulness.

Book excerpt: Students with ED often exhibit disruptive behavior in the classroom that adversely affects the learning environment (Cook, Gresham, Kern, Barreras, Thornton, & Crews, 2008). Culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) students tend to be over-represented in this category of disability. Despite the fact that the majority of students identified with ED are male, females do represent 23.6% of this population (U.S. Department of Education, 1998; Yell, Meadows, Drasgow, & Shriner, 2009). Additionally, a large number of individuals with ED are high school age (Wagner, Friend, Bursuck, Kutash, Duchnowski, Sumi, & Epstein, 2006). Interventions used with this population have often been punitive in nature, designed to control behavior rather than to help an individual improve (Newcomer, 2003). Efforts of the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act of 2001 and the Individual with Disabilities Act (IDEA) require the use of scientifically-based practices when addressing academic and behavioral goals. A variety of interventions for students with ED have been investigated. While many of these interventions produce degrees of positive change, they often demand a great deal of time and effort from the teacher (Wagner et al., 2006). Video self-modeling (VSM) is an intervention involving an individual watching him/herself on video demonstrating desired and appropriate behavior. It has been proven successful with other challenging populations (e.g., individuals with autism) (Buggey, 2005). Few studies of VSM have been conducted with secondary students with ED. The present study was designed to analyze the effects that VSM had on four secondary CLD students with ED across a variety of behaviors, including laughing obnoxiously out loud, using profanity, and requesting help. Multiple baseline designs across students were used to evaluate performance. The results indicated all four participants exhibited immediate and significant gains upon implementation of the VSM intervention, and that those gains were maintained after cessation of intervention. The findings suggest that VSM may represent a positive behavior change intervention worthy of consideration for CLD secondary students with ED.
