Book excerpt: Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2011 in the subject Library Science, Information- / Documentation Science, grade: PhD, University of Ibadan (Education), language: English, abstract: Hearing impairment limits individual in acquiring skills to become active and independent learners. It is therefore important to use adapted media in teaching people with hearing impairment skills to access and use information. These media are lacking in schools that provide integration services to learners with hearing impairment and this adversely affects the acquisition of lifelong skills like library use skills by the learners. There is also a dearth of research on library services to persons with hearing impairment in Nigeria. Against this background, this study investigated the effects of Captioned Video and Direct Instructional strategies on achievement of secondary school students with hearing impairment in library use instruction. The study adopted the pretest-posttest, control group quasi-experimental research design with a 3x2 factorial matrix. It involved a total of 39 Senior Secondary School II students with hearing impairment in three randomly selected schools in Oyo State. Using the intact class method, the schools were randomly assigned to experimental group I, II and the control. While experimental groups I and II were exposed to Captioned Video Instruction and Direct Instruction on library use respectively, the control group was given instruction on various professions they could take up after graduation. Treatment for the groups took seven weeks after the pre-test. Two instruments were used for the study: Library Use Instruction Test (r=0.91) and Library Practical Use Checklist (r=0.80). Library Use Instruction Test measured the intellectual achievement of participants while Library Practical Use Checklist measured their practical achievement. Nine hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. Data collected were analysed using t-test and Analysis of Covariance. There was a significant difference in the achievement of the experimental and control groups (F (2, 36) =10.26; p

Book excerpt: The purpose of this quantitative, causal-comparative study was to examine the results of phonics-based instruction versus guided reading instruction on reading achievement among minority students who are English Language Learners. This study is important because it addresses the gap in the literature that does not target research-based reading instructional strategies that are effective for English Language Learners separate from those that are observed as effective in students whose primary language is English. Archival data were obtained from 86 elementary school English Language Learners in the second grade at two Georgia suburban schools. The instrument used in this study is the MAP test. With permission from the participant schools, data was obtained by reviewing previously submitted lesson plans and reviewing past MAP score reports. An Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) test was used to determine if there was a difference in reading achievement between English Language Learners who received guided reading instruction at the same frequency as phonics-based reading instruction as measured by Lexile scores acquired on the MAP test when controlling for the pretest. All assumptions of ANCOVA were tested and met, concluding that there is a significant difference between English Language Learners who received guided reading instruction at the same frequency as phonics-based reading instruction. Further research is recommended. Other recommendations include ensuring that English Language Learners receive guided reading instruction at the same frequency.

Book excerpt: In this intervention study, I engaged principles of culturally responsive research to examine the effectiveness of explicit reading comprehension strategy instruction for English Learners (ELs) with specific learning disabilities (SLD). This study replicated and extended previous research (Jitendra, Hoppes, & Xin, 2000) by modifying instruction found to be effective for native English speakers (i.e., explicit reading comprehension strategy instruction with a self-monitoring procedure). Modifications included: (a) integrating culturally relevant text, (b) providing native language support, and (c) melding strategies from the fields of teaching English as a second language and special education. Through a co-teaching model, I provided instruction to four participants during a 135-min literacy block in a fifth-grade general education classroom for 13 weeks. A multiple probe across participants design (Gast & Ledford, 2010) evaluated effects of instruction on two dependent variables: (a) participants' sophistication with applying comprehension thinking strategies while reading, as measured by comprehension thinking strategy rubrics (Keene, 2006) and (b) participants' comprehension, as measured through percentage accuracy with responding to verbally-posed, researcher-developed literal and inferential comprehension questions. I assessed maintenance of effects for up to 8 weeks after participants exited the intervention. I assessed generalization to on-grade-level text and to a standardized achievement test (Woodcock Johnson Tests of Academic Achievement III-R; Woodcock, McGrew, & Mather, 2001). Additionally, I examined participants' self-efficacy as readers at pre- and postintervention by collecting information from the Motivation to Read Profile survey and interview (Gambrell, Palmer, Coddling, & Mazzoni, 1996). Finally, I measured participants' perceptions of the social acceptability of intervention procedures and outcomes through a researcher-developed, 9-item, Likert-scale survey. Results of this study show a functional relation for accuracy with answering literal and inferential comprehension questions and for sophistication with applying comprehension thinking strategies to read instructional-level text. All four participants performed within a similar range on on-grade-level probes as compared to instructional-level probes before and after the intervention. Participants improved or maintained scores on a standardized achievement test. Intervention effects maintained at the end of a 2- to 8-week period at a level above respective baseline performance. Moreover, participants' attitudes toward reading and their motivation toward reading increased or maintained at high levels. Results from social validation questionnaires showed favorable impressions of the intervention's procedures and outcomes. Findings are discussed with regard to the need for future research and the implications for practice.

Book excerpt: One of the most significant policy effects of the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act of January 2002 and the subsequent state waivers of this Act, has been an awareness and intolerance of the gaps in student achievement among subgroups of students throughout the United States. Specifically, secondary students with learning disabilities and English Language Learner (ELL) students significantly lag behind non-disabled and English proficient students. In Wisconsin, the NCLB waiver developed by the Department of Public Instruction outlines accountability reform measures, one of which measures each school's progress in closing achievement gaps. At the secondary level, where the numbers of students in these subgroups continue to rise while proficiency levels in reading continue to reveal large gaps, educators are desperate for effective reading intervention programs. The National Institute for Literacy (2002) asserts that "it is clear that much research is needed in this under-studied area ... experimental and quasi-experimental studies of instructional methods modes for effective reading instructional delivery in middle and high school and specific interventions for struggling readers are needed." Educational decisions about effective reading interventions must be fully justified and logically compelled by data. Curriculum directors and secondary principals are desperate for assistance in selecting and implementing the most effective literacy initiatives. The purpose of this study is to provide further information on the attributes of reading intervention programs that have led to improved reading proficiency among students with learning disabilities and English Language Learners. The study specifically provides the perspective of the students enrolled in interventions and the teachers delivering them. Research Questions 1. From the perspective of students and teachers, what are the attributes of two alternative intensive reading interventions that contribute to improved reading proficiency among secondary English Language Learners (ELL) and students with learning disabilities (LD)? 2. What factors contribute to the successes or challenges of implementing these interventions at secondary schools?

Book excerpt: The purpose of this quasi experimental research study was to examine the effects of two direct instruction programs, SRA Reading Mastery Signature and SRA Reading Success on reading comprehension skill acquisition of middle school students who qualify as a student with a specific learning disability. Furthermore, the study was used to compare the reading comprehension achievement of students who participated in SRA Reading Mastery Signature and students who participated in SRA Reading Success using the reading portion of the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) assessment. The treatment groups were located in a moderate size school district in the Upstate region of South Carolina. After a 10-week intervention period, post test scores from the literary text subtest, informational text subtest, and vocabulary development subtest of the reading portion of the Measure of Academic Progress assessment were compared using three separate ANCOVA. The pretest scores served as the covariate. There were no significant differences found between the two treatment groups. Practical and methodological implications and limitations are discussed and recommendations for future research are included.

Book excerpt: Private schools always provide a better education than public schools. Or do they? Inner-city private schools, most of which are Catholic, suffer from the same problems neighboring public schools have including large class sizes, unqualified teachers, outdated curricula, lack of parental involvement and stressful family and community circumstances. Straightforward and authoritative, All Else Equal challenges us to reconsider vital policy decisions and rethink the issues facing our current educational system.

Book excerpt: Seasoned classroom veterans, pre-tenured faculty, and neophyte teaching assistants alike will find this book invaluable. HHMI Professor Jo Handelsman and her colleagues at the Wisconsin Program for Scientific Teaching (WPST) have distilled key findings from education, learning, and cognitive psychology and translated them into six chapters of digestible research points and practical classroom examples. The recommendations have been tried and tested in the National Academies Summer Institute on Undergraduate Education in Biology and through the WPST. Scientific Teaching is not a prescription for better teaching. Rather, it encourages the reader to approach teaching in a way that captures the spirit and rigor of scientific research and to contribute to transforming how students learn science.
