Book excerpt: This paper represents the first part of a systematic investigation of factors affecting the fatigue resistance of surface-hardened steel components. The adopted approach is to view a surface-hardened member as a composite material consisting of a high strength, low ductility case and a lower strength, higher ductility core. A series of smooth axial specimens, representing case and core carbon contents, were prepared to determine cyclic stress-strain and strain-life curves. The cyclic properties obtained from these tests were then used to analyze and interpret the cyclic behavior of carburized specimens. Both axial and bend specimens were carburized and subjected to constant amplitude, strain-controlled fatigue tests. A discontinuity in the resulting strain-life curves, representing a shift from surface to subsurface crack initiation, is predictable from comparison of the strain-life curves for simulated case and core material. Finally, a relation is developed to determine optimum casexore ratios taking into account cyclic material properties, residual stresses, strain gradient, and applied stress or strain level.
Book Synopsis Frequency Effects on Fatigue Behavior and Temperature Evolution of Steels by : B. Yang
Download or read book Frequency Effects on Fatigue Behavior and Temperature Evolution of Steels written by B. Yang and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue experiments on steels were conducted using an advanced electrohydraulic machine, which has a frequency range from approximately 1 Hz to 1000 Hz. Increasing the test frequency from 10 Hz to 1000 Hz will increase the specimen temperature, which, in turn, will decrease the fatigue life in air. However, in mercury, due to the cooling effect by mercury, little change in fatigue life was observed at different frequencies.

Book Synopsis Mechanisms of Fretting Fatigue Crack Initiation in Medium Strength Steels by : D. J. Duquette
Download or read book Mechanisms of Fretting Fatigue Crack Initiation in Medium Strength Steels written by D. J. Duquette and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Effects of carburization and decarburization were studied on the fretting fatigue behavior of a medium carbon steel at room temperature. Tests were conducted in room air in a listing frame which was designed to vary the fretting (normal) load, and the relative displacement (slip amplitude) between the list specimens and fretting pads. Statistical studies conducted on the specimens indicated that after a threshold value of normal load, the fretting fatigue lives dropped by an order of magnitude. No significant effects of slip amplitude or fretting wear were observed on the fretting fatigue life. (Author).

Book Synopsis Elevated Temperature Fatigue Properties of Two Low Alloy Steels by : C. A. PENROSE
Download or read book Elevated Temperature Fatigue Properties of Two Low Alloy Steels written by C. A. PENROSE and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two low alloy steels, heat treated to yield strengths approximating 175,000 and 150,000 psi, were fatigue tested under rotating beam conditions at temperatures of 70, 400, 600, 800 and 1000 F. The fatigue data is related to the tensile properties at various test temperatures. Temper embrittlement, occurring during the course of fatigue testing and its effect on the fatigue properties, is also demonstrated. For the steels investigated, the elevated temperature tensile properties appear to be good predictors of elevated temperature fatigue behavior. However, the occurrence of a subcritical temperature phenomenon to which the specific steel is susceptible (such as temper embrittlement) will affect the fatigue behavior and destroy its fatigue-tensile relationship.
