On average, participants hit 98% of the targets presented when cued about the location of targets compared to 64% in a baseline condition (no cues). When target location cues were provided, time to first shot was an average 26% faster; 23% more information was recalled from the auditory and visual communications, and overall workload scores were 17% lower. On average, time to first shot in the visual and spatial language modes was 13% faster than in the tactile condition and 26% faster than in the 3-D audio mode. Overall workload scores were an average 14% higher in the 3-D audio mode than in the other conditions in which target location cues were provided. Communications modality did not have a significant effect on either the amount of information recalled from the communications or on target acquisition. No interactions were found between communications modality and cue condition. However, on average, 10% more information was recalled from communications when target location cues were provided in the visual mode than in the other cue conditions.

Book excerpt: Human factors studies of an array of military operation roles have shown significant overloading of the visual channel during the execution of many Soldier tasks, such as navigation and target detection (Mitchell, Samms, Glumm, Krausman, Brelsford, & Garrett, 2004). The objective of this study was to assess the effectiveness of tactile and three-dimensional (3-D) auditory cues to reduce overall workload and response time during high-visual workload target acquisition and robot navigation tasks. Soldiers performed target acquisition and navigation tasks in a computer-based simulation of Army target acquisition and navigation of robotic resources. Within this simulation (Operation Flashpoint), the participant functioned as the vehicle's commander/gunner. At pre-determined intervals, semi-autonomous robots called for help and directions. The call for help occurred three different ways: a) visual indication, b) 3-D audio alert, and c) tactile alert. Results indicate that the mean response time in the tactile condition was significantly lower than in the audio or visual conditions. There was no significant difference between audio and visual conditions. Ratings of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Task Load Index workload were lowest for tactile and highest for the 3-D audio condition.

Book excerpt: Abstract: This study attempted to resolve the findings within Vu et al. and Bertolotti and Strybel regarding horizontal and vertical auditory cue displacement on target identification by examining local target area visual saliency and target uncertainty. Targets were identified with either an auditory cue or auditory-visual cue. Auditory cues were noise bursts spatially coincident with, or directionally displaced 40 or 80 from the target. Visual cues (circle: 6.50 radius) accurately identified the local target area surrounding the target. Target uncertainty varied the percentage of targets present within a given session. For auditory cues, as target probability increased, horizontal auditory cue displacement became a greater detriment to target identification regardless of error magnitude. For auditory-visual cues, while both target present and absent search times decreased significantly compared to auditory cues, target absent identification demonstrated the most significant improvement from increasing local target area visual saliency. Design recommendations and future research are discussed.

Book excerpt: The research presented in this thesis was designed to investigate whether and how the temporal synchrony and spatial congruence of non-visual cues with visual targets could work together to improve the discrimination and identification of visual targets in neurologically-healthy adult humans. The speed and accuracy of participants' responses were compared following the presence or absence of temporally synchronous and/or spatially congruent or incongruent auditory, vibrotactile, and audiotactile cues in the context of dynamic visual search and rapidly-masked visual target identification. The understanding of the effects of auditory, vibrotactile, and audiotactile cues derived from these laboratory-based tasks was then applied to an air traffic control simulation involving the detection and resolution of potential conflicts (represented as visual targets amidst dynamic and cluttered visual stimuli). The results of the experiments reported in this thesis demonstrate that, in the laboratory-based setting, temporally synchronous and spatially informative non-visual cues both gave rise to significant improvements in participants' performance, and the combination of temporal and spatial cuing gave rise to additional improvements in visual target identification performance. In the real-world setting, however, only the temporally synchronous unimodal auditory and bimodal audiotactile cues gave rise to a consistent facilitation of participants' visual target detection performance. The mechanisms and accounts proposed to explain the effects of spatial and temporal cuing, namely multisensory integration and attention, are examined and discussed with respect to the observed improvements in participants' visual target identification performance.

Book excerpt: Visual search tasks are known to be cognitive capacity demanding and therefore may be improved by training in an augmented reality (AR) environment. During the experimental task, 64 participants searched for enemies (while cued from visual, auditory, tactile, combinations of two, or all three modality cues) and tried to shoot them while avoiding shooting the civilians (fratricide) for two 2-minute low-workload scenarios, and two 2-minute high-workload scenarios. The results showed significant benefits of attentional cueing on visual search task performance. These benefits were revealed by improved performance in reaction time and accuracy from the haptic cues alone, auditory cues alone, and the combination of the visual and haptic cues together. Fratricide occurrence was shown to be amplified by the presence of the audio cues. The two levels of workload produced differences within individual's task performance for accuracy and reaction time. Accuracy and reaction time were significancy better with the medium cues than all the other cue * specificities and the control condition during low workload and marginally better during high workload. Cue specificity generally resulted in better accuracy and reaction time with the medium cues.
