Book excerpt: The study tested hypotheses about the effects of anxiety on learning derived from drive and trait-state anxiety theory. The effects of stress on state anxiety (A-State) and on performance in a computer-assisted learning task were investigated for female introductory college students who differed in anxiety proneness (A-Trait). The Ss were selected on the basis of extreme scores on the A-trait scale of the state-trait anxiety inventory. Stress was induced by feedback concerning performance on a mathematical learning task which was presented by an IBM system. In the stress condition, Ss received negative feedback about performance. The Ss in the nonstress condition were given a brief rest period in place of the negative feedback. (Author).

Book Synopsis Effects of Memory Support on State Anxiety and Performance in Computer-assisted Learning by : Barbara L. Leherissey
Download or read book Effects of Memory Support on State Anxiety and Performance in Computer-assisted Learning written by Barbara L. Leherissey and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hypothesis that memory support (MS) reduces state anxiety (A-state) and errors in a computer-assisted learning task was investigated. It was predicted that high A-state students given MS would make fewer errors than high A-state students who were given no memory support (NMS). Low A-state students were expected to perform equally as well with or without MS. Sixty male undergraduates were randomly assigned to MS or NMS conditions. All students received the same learning materials. The MS group was allowed to see previous incorrect responses to each problem before attempting it again, whereas this information was not available to the NMS group. The findings were compared with the results of previous research on anxiety and memory support. (Author).
Book Synopsis Anxiety, Learning, and Instruction by : J. E. Sieber
Download or read book Anxiety, Learning, and Instruction written by J. E. Sieber and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-05 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1977. Each of the authors independently initiated research to find ways of reducing the undesirable effects of anxiety 1 on intellectual performance. The aim of this book is to summarize the research and ideas that have emerged from these programs. It is both a progress report on the approaches we have developed for reducing anxiety or its undesirable effects, and a means of sharing our insights concerning better ways of accomplishing these goals in the future.
Book Synopsis The Effects of Anxiety on Computer-Assisted Learning by : Charles D. Spielberger
Download or read book The Effects of Anxiety on Computer-Assisted Learning written by Charles D. Spielberger and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nature of anxiety is considered in historical perspective, and the concepts of trait and state anxiety are discussed. Methods for measuring these constructs are also described. In addition, hypothesis about the effects of anxiety on learning were formulated in terms of Spence-Taylor Drive Theory and Spielberger's Trait-State Anxiety Theory, and tested in two experiments on the effects of anxiety on computer-assisted learning. It was found in these studies that state anxiety was a better predictor of performance than trait anxiety, and that performance was an interactive function of A-State and task difficulty. Some important implications for the classroom teacher of research on anxiety and learning were discussed. (Author).
Book Synopsis Effects of Anxiety, Response Mode, Subject Matter Familiarity and Learning Time on Achievement in Computer-Assisted Learning by : Barbara L. Leherissey
Download or read book Effects of Anxiety, Response Mode, Subject Matter Familiarity and Learning Time on Achievement in Computer-Assisted Learning written by Barbara L. Leherissey and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Effects of trait and state anxiety levels (low, medium, high), response modes (reading, constructed response), and program length (short, long) on performance for familiar and technical computer-assisted instruction materials were investigated. High trait anxiety was associated with high levels of state anxiety. Constructed response groups had higher levels of state anxiety than reading groups. However, shortening learning program length did not reduce state anxiety although in some cases it improved performance. Students in the short constructed response version performed better than students in the long constructed response version only on the familiar portion of the posttest. It was suggested that a decreased memory load for this group may have contributed to this finding. (Author).
Book Synopsis The Effects of Trait Anxiety and Dogmatism on State Anxiety During Computer-Assisted Learning by : Edward Rappaport
Download or read book The Effects of Trait Anxiety and Dogmatism on State Anxiety During Computer-Assisted Learning written by Edward Rappaport and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study was concerned with the effects of anxiety and dogmatism in computer-assisted learning. Several hypotheses based on Rokeach's conception of dogmatism and Spielberger's Trait-State Anxiety Theory were set forth. Female Ss were selected on the basis of extreme scores on the STAI A-Trait Scale and the Dogmatism Scale. The computer-assisted learning task consisted of difficult mathematical problems presented by an IBM 1500 CAI System. The hypothesized relationship between dogmatism and A-State was not confirmed. When controlled for A-Trait, HD and LS S did not differ in the level of A-State displayed during the experiment. As hypothesized, HA-Trait Ss had significantly higher levels of A-State during the experiment than LA-Trait Ss. Neither A-Trait nor dogmatism was related to errors on the CAI task. However, a significant interactive effect of math ability and A-State on performance was observed. HA-State resulted in more errors for low math ability Ss but had no effect on the performance of high math ability Ss. This finding was explained in terms of Drive Theory. (Author).

Book excerpt: Anxiety: Current Trends in Theory and Research, Volume I, seeks to facilitate a more comprehensive understanding of anxiety phenomena. This volume emerged from a symposium on Anxiety: Current Trends in Theory and Research held at Florida State University in the spring of 1970. The symposium brought together persons who have made important contributions to the understanding of anxiety phenomena and provided them with an opportunity to react to each other's ideas. One of the main goals of the symposium was to stimulate confrontation among opposing views with the expectation that this would, at least, provide clarification of terminology and eliminate the semantic confusion plaguing the field. The volume is organized into three parts. Part I presents an overview of the unique theoretical perspective and research objectives with which each contributor has approached the topic of anxiety. It also provides background information and historical perspective for the reader with limited familiarity with this area. Part II contains papers focusing on the nature and measurement of anxiety. Part III deals with the neurophysiological and biochemical aspects of anxiety. This work is intended primarily for psychologists and students of psychology, but it should be of interest to any behavioral or medical scientist concerned with a more comprehensive understanding of personality and psychopathology.
