Economic and natural resource systems interact in many important ways, hence the need to understand these interactions and develop effective public policy. The dynamic interactions of resource degradation with socioeconomic factors are neither well understood in Nigeria, nor are their implications for Vision 20:2020. This study explored the inherent dynamic interactions and feedback between the nation's environment and socioeconomic spheres. The study shows that a bi-directional or feedback relationship exists between the index of resource degradation and Nigeria's socioeconomic profile with sustained effects over a ten-year horizon. This study, therefore, recommends a more comprehensive holistic and sustainable development path, and strategies and policies that integrate rural development and renewable natural resources management in order to tackle the complex, diverse and deeply rooted issues underlying the worsening resource degradation in Nigeria and improve the nation's bio-capacity.

Book excerpt: Having established the failure of the legal regime, the study examines the consequences of the State's failure to sustainably develop its petroleum resources and consider if such failure has any impact on the stability and sustainability of petroleum projects themselves. Perhaps the most surprising finding to emerge from this study is that while the failure of the regulatory regime has negatively impacted the local population, the resulting social unrest or risks does not negatively impact the stability and sustainability of petroleum projects in real terms when compared with the cost of improving environmetal practices. In the search for solutions to address the failure of the existing regime and its consequences, the study examined relevant provisions of the new Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) intending to ascertain if there are significant improvements capable of ensuring the sustainable development of Nigeria's petroleum resources. It concludes that while the PIB contains some improvements on the existing regulatory regime, there are problematic provisions that require some attention if the nation is to achieve the goal of sustainable development of its petroleum resources.

In the process of this gigantic work, Suleiman obtained some information that is not necessarily accompanied in his PhD thesis, and which the materials in this book is part of that extra materials. The book was aim to address the impact and causes of climate change and soil degradation under agricultural soil environment in Kebbi State Nigeria. The results provided, indicated that farmer’s viewpoints on the impact of climate change and soil degradation have contemplation in the global climate change and soil degradation perspectives. Farmers believed that climate change and soil degradation are interconnected, and have induced some unacceptable changes to their agricultural lands in Kebbi State. The results designated that soil and soil properties were changed in form of soil erosion, desertification, dessert encroachment, leaching, mass movement of soil particles, development of gullies or land channels, and subsequently poor soil quality, poor crop performance and annual yield reduction. Farmers are in the opinion that the major factors underlying the progressive enhancement of these problems are deforestation, poverty, drought, overgrazing, population, poor government policy and poor research development.
