Book excerpt: Bluegills and channel catfish were exposed to four applications of malathion at two concentrations in ponds over an 11-week summer period. Fish losses ranged from 8 to 44 percent but could not be correlated to treatment levels. Neither acute nor chronic pathology developed, nor were depressions in the brain cholinesterase activity significant or reproducible. The total number of aquatic insects from plate sampling the low-treated ponds was not significantly lower than that from the untreated ponds, but the number of organisms from the high-treated ponds was significantly lower than that from either the low-treated or untreated ponds. Chironomidae was the dominant family of aquatic insects, and formed about 70 percent of the total benthos. This group showed a significant reduction in numbers in both low- and high-treated ponds after the third application of malathion.

This book was released on 1970 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The total number of adult fish in Lake Frances Case, a main steam Missouri River Reservoir, has declined since impoundment in 1952. Goldeye, channel catfish, and northern redhorse have probably remained the same; emerald shiner, white bass, walleye, and possibly flathead catfish have increased. The sauger population began to decline at about the time walleye numbers increased. Some species formerly present have become rare. Forage species in the reservoir were gizzard shad, emerald shiner, and yellow perch, but these were not present in large enough numbers to provide an abundant forage fish population.

This book was released on 1972 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acute and long-term (20-day) toxicities of 40 insecticides to four species of freshwater malacostracan crustaceans (the scud, crayfish, glass shrimp, and aquatic sowbug) were determined in static and intermittent-flow bioassays. An extremely wide range in toxicity was found with scuds generally being the most sensitive, followed in descending order by glass shrimp, sowbugs, and crayfish.

Book Synopsis Verification of a Model for Predicting the Effect of Inconstant Temperature on Embryonic Development of Lake Whitefish (Coregonus Clupeaformis) by : William H. Berlin
Download or read book Verification of a Model for Predicting the Effect of Inconstant Temperature on Embryonic Development of Lake Whitefish (Coregonus Clupeaformis) written by William H. Berlin and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eggs stripped from lake whitefish spawning in Lake Michigan were incubated in the laboratory at temperatures similar to those on whitefish spawning grounds in Lake Michigan during December-April. Observed times from fertilization to attachment of each of 21 developmental stages were used to test a model that predicts the rate of development at daily fluctuating temperatures; the model relates rate of development for any given stage j, expressed as the reciprocal of time (Rj), to temperature (T). The generalized equation for a developmental stage is Rj = abt ct[squared]. The model was used to predict the effects of small temperature increases (caused by a hypothetical waste-heat discharge) on the rate of development and time of hatching of lake whitefish eggs.

Book Synopsis Alteration Tests of the Abernathy Salmon Diet, 1971 by : Laurie G. Fowler
Download or read book Alteration Tests of the Abernathy Salmon Diet, 1971 written by Laurie G. Fowler and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Feeding trials using fall chinook salmon finglerlings were conducted at the Salmon Cultural Laboratory, Longview, Washington, during 1971 for the purpose of improving the Abernathy diet formula. The results indicated that cottonseed meal could replace a portion of the fish meal in the diet without reducing fish growth, but similar substitutions of wheat and corn gluten meal reduced growth. Fish growth was significantly increased when a diet containing 50 percent protein and 3,350 kcal per kilogram was fed as compared with a diet containing 45 percent protein and 3,350 kcal per kilogram. Soybean lecithin proved to be equal to soybean oil as a caloric source when fed at 2 percent of the diet. Two types of dried whey product with different levels of lactose content produced similar growth response. Reducing the dried whey portion of the diet to 5 percent did not affect growth, nor did methionine supplementation produce any effects. Anchovy meal was unsuitable as a replacement for herring meal.
