Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to determine the overall effects of literacy interventions by analyzing the academic gains of 70 fourth-grade students in a low-income urban school. Using a benchmark assessment system, students were placed into 1 of 3 groups based upon their instructional reading level: no interventions, lower intensity interventions, and higher intensity interventions. This study uses a repeated measures t test to analyze academic gains for each group as well as a one-way ANOVA to analyze the gains made between the groups. While there was no significant difference between the groups in academic gains due to literacy interventions, and no significant difference in academic gains within the group with no interventions or the group with higher intensity interventions, there was a significant difference in academic gains with the lower intensity interventions group. Book excerpt: As America’s schools strive to educate a diverse population of students, some of these students, who are identified as low-achieving, find school to be difficult. The need to improve low-achieving students’ reading skills has been the focus and concern of educators for many years. This study, which utilized a causal comparative research design, investigated third and fourth grade students’ literacy achievement scores for participation or non-participation in the Students Reading Enrichment Program (SREP), which is an in-school and/or after-school program, in the Jenkins School District (JSD). The SREP provides low-achieving students the opportunity to work in small groups with interventionists, teachers, and tutors who offer structured support based on each student’s ability level. The purpose of the study was to determine if the SREP in-school and after-school programs affected student achievement in Grades 3 and 4. Students’ MCT2 and STAR Reading scores were statistically examined. Existing data from a convenience sample of students were used. A multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA) and Pearson correlations were used to answer the research questions for this study. The independent variables for the study were: (a) level of participation, (b) grade level, (c) sex, and (d) attendance. The dependent or treatment variable, Reading Achievement, was comprised of students’ reading scaled scores on MCT2 and STAR Reading. No statistically significant differences were found to indicate that reading interventions affected student achievement in Grades 3 and 4. Recommendations for future research include: (a) conducting longitudinal studies to determine long term effects on students attending in-school and after-school programs over the remaining four years of the SREP, (b) analyzing other variables such as classroom teachers, in-school interventionists, after-school teachers, and after-school tutors, (c) investigating the unique contribution that each of these variables has on student achievement, (d) comparing data for the interventionists who are certified teachers and the interventionists who are not certified teachers, and (e) examining the professional development of classroom teachers, in-school interventionists, after-school teachers, and after-school tutors.

Book excerpt: This study was a case study which focused on improving reading achievement and reading motivation for a student attending a large mid-West urban school district. The student was in second grade at and is diagnosed with a mild cognitive disability. The intervention consisted of ten sessions, for 60 minutes. The sessions focused on research-based methods to increase reading motivation and achievement: content goals, student choice, and hands on activities. Pre and post data was collected on the students reading motivation, reading achievement, performance in the literacy sessions, and classroom behaviors. The results of the study indicated that the interventions had an effect on the students motivation as measured in a motivation survey, behavior in sessions and classroom behavior. In addition, the student's reading achievement increased through the study. At the end the student was able to move from a frustration level to an instruction level on primer text.

This quantitative study attempted to address the problem of low-income African American students from northeast Louisiana entering ninth grade with low reading skills. The purpose of this ex post facto study was to investigate the effects of a Response to Intervention (RtI) Tier 2 literacy intervention on the academic achievement of ninth grade students reading below grade level. The research was grounded in Bloom's mastery learning theory and Dewey's child-centered learning theory. The research question was whether students that completed the literacy intervention performed better on the ninth grade state-mandated assessment than students who did not receive the intervention. The secondary data used in this ex post facto study were the ninth grade iLEAP ELA (integrated Louisiana Educational Assessment Program) scores as measures for the dependent variable. Students who completed the literacy intervention did not score significantly higher on the iLEAP ELA. These results indicated that the intervention that was evaluated in this study was not effective with the population involved in this research. The findings point to the need for alternative literacy interventions that may have to be customized for student populations with different remediation needs.

Book excerpt: English Language Learners (ELLs) in the United States have been plagued by low reading achievement, high dropout rates, and overrepresentation in special education. One researched-based reading intervention, Reading Recovery®, has a large body of research supporting its effectiveness for native speakers as well as a few studies demonstrating its effectiveness for ELLs. However, there is limited research comparing the rates of progress of native English speakers with those of ELLs as well as exploring if there is a difference in outcomes between students at different English language proficiency levels. The research questions that guided this investigation are: 1) How do the reading achievement outcomes of English Language Learners receiving the intervention Reading Recovery® compare to the outcomes of native English speakers receiving the same intervention in grade one of a large diverse urban school district? 2) What is the relationship between the reading achievement outcomes and proficiency levels of English Language Learners as determined by the Reading Recovery language proficiency intake assessment? This study employed a quantitative methodology to compare the reading achievement outcomes of students receiving the intervention Reading Recovery® in a large, urban district from 2004-2013. The analysis in this study suggests that Reading Recovery was actually "more" effective for ELLs. Based on the results of this research study, it is recommended that access be expanded and that all low reading performing ELLs that meet the selection criteria, regardless of English proficiency, be considered for Reading Recovery®.
