Book excerpt: Aim: This study aimed to determine whether music affects anxiety level of patientsu2019 and painexperiences associated with colonoscopy. Methods: The study was conducted as a randomized controlled quasi-experimental studybetween 20 July 2017 and 20 September 2017 in the Department od GastroentrologyPolyclinic of Adnan Menderes University, Aydu0131n. Forty colonoscopy patients wererandomized into either listening to music (Experimental group, n=20) or not listening tomusic(Control group, n=20). After all patients were informed about procedure by researcher, the anxiety level of patientsu2019 was measured using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventoryu2019s twoscales (STAI-State and STAI-Trait) and the pain was measured Visual Analog Scale (VAS).Patients in the experimental group were listened the Turkish Art Music with headphones for15 minutes during colonoscopy. The control group did not listen to the music duringprocedure. After the procedure, all patients rated pain and only STAI-State related to theprocedure. Results: According the sociodemographic characteristics of patients, 55% of the patients inthe experimental group were female and 50% of the control group were male. It wasdetermined that 59.1% of the patients in the experimental group and 72.2% of the patients inthe control group had no cancer storms. In addition to this 55% of the experimental group and61.1% of the control group patients had colonoscopy before. The patients in the control groupThe mean age 55.77u00b116.22 (min=24, max=78) in control group and 55.95u00b111.40 (min=31max= 79) in the experimental group. After the procedure the mean STAI-state score was37.55u00b14.24 (min=32 max=48) in the experimental group and 38,25u00b17.25 (min=29 max=60) inthe control group (p=0.476). Mean pain score was 1.8u00b10.53(min=0 max=8) in the controlgroup and 1.56u00b10.53 (min=0 max=10) in the experimental group (p=0.925).Conclusion: According to results no significant effects of music on anxiety and pain duringcolonoscopy.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this repeated-measures, two-group experimental study was to explore the effects of a nonpharmacological nursing intervention, namely a music relaxation video, for women with gynecological cancer undergoing intracavitary brachytherapy. Participants were randomly assigned to either an experimental group or a control group. Those in the experimental group watched a 30-minute music relaxation video a total of four times during the first 44 hours of intracavitary brachytherapy. Five hypotheses were addressed. Data were collected to evaluate the video's effects on pain, opioid consumption, frequency of patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) demanded and delivered injections and anxiety during that time. Pain scores were measured before and after watching the 30-minute music relaxation video, and anxiety scores were measured following the video. The control group received the same nursing care and underwent the same measurements without watching the video. Forty-four women with gynecologic cancer who were receiving their first intracavitary brachytherapy were recruited and randomly assigned to one of two groups. Chi square, Fisher's exact test and t-test were used in demographic data. Age and ethnicity were different, but they were not related to outcomes. No statistically significant differences in health-related variables, baseline pain or anxiety were identified. Hypotheses were tested using a t-test or ANOVA. Main effects were found on trial groups ( p = 0.008) and pre and post pain scores (p

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to use music to distract and relax pediatric patients during medical procedures. Procedural support via live music therapy interventions included a variety of activities such as music paired with breathing exercises, counting to music, developing sequence in song, and manipulation of musical and play objects. Because invasive and non-invasive are two radically different types of procedures, two separate experimental designs were implemented and administered to a total of 40 pediatric patients between the ages of 5 and 12, in the main area and the emergency department of a southeastern regional hospital in North Florida. Invasive procedures included intravenous starts, finger pricks, incision and draining, suturing, and removal of foreign material in the skin. Non-invasive procedures included X-rays, computed tomography scans, and breathing treatments. All subjects were randomly assigned to a control or experimental group. Demographics were collected on all pediatric patients; this information included gender, age, procedure, and length of procedure. For self-report, The Pain Intensity and Assessment Tool, modeled after the Wong-Baker FACES Pain Rating Scale, was administered pre and post treatment to measure each child's level of pain, and modified to measure each child's level of anxiety. Results indicated no significant difference in control versus experimental groups receiving either invasive or non-invasive procedures in the main hospital or emergency centers. Mean and standard deviation scores, however, showed a decrease in anxiety and pain levels when comparing pre to post procedures. A behavioral checklist was used post-intervention to record the number of times an anxiety-related behavior occurred. Regardless of procedure, groups receiving music intervention displayed fewer aversive behaviors than groups that did not. In addition, patient satisfaction with MT assistance during the medial procedures was 100%.
