This book was released on 2018-08-14 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Longitudinal aerodynamic characteristics for a hydrogen-fueled hypersonic transport concept at Mach 6 are presented. The model components consist of four bodies with identical longitudinal area distributions but different cross-sectional shapes and widths, a wing, horizontal and vertical tails, and a set of wing-mounted nacelles simulated by slid bodies on the wing upper surface. Lift-drag ratios were found to be only sightly affected by fuselage planform width or cross sectional shape. Relative distribution of fuselage volume above and below the wing was found to have an effect on the lift-drag ratio, with a higher lift drag ratio produced by the higher wing position. Riebe, G. D. Book excerpt: An analysis is presented of the influence of wing aspect ratio and tail location on the effects of compressibility upon static longitudinal stability. The investigation showed that the use of reduced wing aspect ratios or short tail lengths leads to serious reductions in high-speed stability and the possibility of high-speed instability.

Book excerpt: Summary: An investigation of the power-off longitudinal stability characteristics of a tailless all-wing airplane model with various wing modifications has been made in the Langley free-flight tunnel. Force and tuft tests were made on the model in the original condition, with the wing tips rotated for washout, with rectangular and swept-forward tips, and with various slat arrangements. Flight tests were made with the original wing and with the original wing equipped with the most promising modifications. The results indicated that changes in tip plan form or rotation of the wing tips did not appreciably reduce the instability at high lift coefficients. Addition of wing slats, however, improved the longitudinal stability at the stall when the slat extended far enough inboard to cover the area that tended to stall first.

Book excerpt: Abstract: An experimental investigation has been performed to determine the effect of changes in body cross-section shape on the aerodynamic characteristics of bodies and wing-body combinations. A series of 13 bodies having a given length and given longitudinal distribution of cross-sectional area but various cross-section shapes were tested at a Mach number of 2.01. The bodies were tested alone and in combination with a 47° sweptback wing having a 6-percent-thick hexagonal section.
