Book excerpt: An examination of existing data was conducted to determine the effects of different kindergarten options on subsequent academic achievement in French immersion programs. It was concluded that there was no evidence for any superiority in outcomes for full-day bilingual as compared to half-day French kindergarten. No clear trends emerged in the comparison of full-day bilingual vs. half-day English groups at the grade 1 level, although differences in French skills were apparent between these two groups in grades 2 and 3. These trends are interpreted as tentative evidence that exposure to French in kindergarten influences subsequent performance in French. Analysis of further studies confirmed this interpretation, although several studies indicated the possibility of students who did not experience French kindergarten closing the gap in French skills. Virtually no data were found that considered possible differential effects on half-day vs. full-day kindergartens on students with different background characteristics. (Author/JB)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book the authors decry the creation of a version of Canadian identity that actively discourages the cultivation of many of its citizens' languages. If multilingualism is regarded as a valuable asset both for the individual and for society, then why do so many Canadians vehemently oppose the teaching of heritage languages? Why do many parents who demand that their children be given the opportunity to become bilingual in French and English protest angrily at the fact that their tax dollars are being used to teach the languages of immigrant children? Why is it appropriate to promote multilingualism in private schools but not in the public school system? Is multilingualism good for the rich but bad for the poor? Heritage Languages examines the difficulties experienced integrating heritage languages into official curricula, and the successful efforts to teach Ukrainian, Italian, Hebrew, ASL, Portuguese and Punjabi in Canadian classrooms. An Our Schools/Our Selves book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bilingualism Through Schooling is a comprehensive survey of bilingual education. It shows how bilingual schooling can have a double impact by providing students with functional second-language competence, and also contributing to their deeper understanding of culture and history. Concerned with both ethnolinguistic minority children and majority, English-speaking pupils, the book approaches bilingualism from a variety of perspectives—linguistic, psychological, and socio-cultural. Among the many topics discussed are: goals and consequences of bilingualism, sociolinguistic contexts, language attitudes, and proficiency assessment. Ramirez explores the various types of programs and techniques used to facilitate second-language acquisition and also provides guidelines for the preparation and certification of bilingual instructors. Bibliographies are included.
