The substrates endogenously have limited nutrients and low water-holding capacity. Plants grown in the containers must be fertilized and watered frequently varying from daily to weekly. Frequent fertilization and irrigation can result in nutrient leaching and/or runoff. Since nitrogen (N) is a key component of the majority of fertilizers, container plant production has been viewed as a source of N leaching and/or runoff. The leaching and runoff, if in large quantities on a year-round basis, could affect surface and ground water quality. Application of controlled-release fertilizers (CRFs) has been reported to have less N leaching than plants fertilized with water-soluble fertilizers (WSFs). However, there are different types of CRFs with different compositions and longevities on the market. Container plants also differ greatly in their growth and development and in N requirement. Thus, production of high-quality container plants with minimum N leaching using CRFs still remains challenging. This article is intended to discuss characteristics of container plant production and N leaching and runoff during production, and to document that CRF application can reduce N leaching and/or runoff. Certain requirements for future development of CRFs are also discussed.

Efficient nitrogen management is one of the most important factor for improving nitrogen use efficiency, field crops productivity and profitability. Efficient use of nitrogen for crop production is therefore very important for increasing grain yield, maximizing economic return and minimizing nitrous oxide (N2O) emission from the fields and nitrate (NO3) leaching to ground water. Integrated nitrogen management is a good strategy to improve plant growth, increase yield and yield components, grain quality and reduce environmental problems. Integrated nitrogen management (combined use of chemical + organic + bio-fertilizers) in field crop production is more resilient to climate change.

Book excerpt: Winner of an Outstanding Academic Title Award from CHOICE Magazine Encyclopedia of Environmental Management gives a comprehensive overview of environmental problems, their sources, their assessment, and their solutions. Through in-depth entries and a topical table of contents, readers will quickly find answers to questions about specific pollution and management issues. Edited by the esteemed Sven Erik Jørgensen and an advisory board of renowned specialists, this four-volume set shares insights from more than 500 contributors—all experts in their fields. The encyclopedia provides basic knowledge for an integrated and ecologically sound management system. Nearly 400 alphabetical entries cover everything from air, soil, and water pollution to agriculture, energy, global pollution, toxic substances, and general pollution problems. Using a topical table of contents, readers can also search for entries according to the type of problem and the methodology. This allows readers to see the overall picture at a glance and find answers to the core questions: What is the pollution problem, and what are its sources? What is the "big picture," or what background knowledge do we need? How can we diagnose the problem, both qualitatively and quantitatively, using monitoring and ecological models, indicators, and services? How can we solve the problem with environmental technology, ecotechnology, cleaner technology, and environmental legislation? How do we address the problem as part of an integrated management strategy? This accessible encyclopedia examines the entire spectrum of tools available for environmental management. An indispensable resource, it guides environmental managers to find the best possible solutions to the myriad pollution problems they face. Book excerpt: Abstract: This thesis describes the effects of controlled-release fertilizers (CRF) of different formulations and longevities on nutrient leaching out of the containers and garden performance of Impatiens walleriana. In the first experiment, impatiens plants were grown with Osmocote Plus 16-9-12 formulation of 5-6 month (5-6M) and 8-9 month (8-9M) longevities placed at four positions in the container: Topdressed, Incorporated, Top-one-third and Bottom. A 150 mgL−1 N Peter's Professional water-soluble fertilizer (WSF) of 20-10-20 formulation was used as a control. Leachates were collected at every irrigation and the concentrations of N, P, and Fe in the leachates were measured. Shoot dry weight (DW) and canopy cover (CC) were also measured. Total amount of water leached and nutrients lost from CRF and WSF were quantified. WSF produced plants of similar quality as CRF treatments except when CRF was applied at the bottom of the container. This fertilizer placement resulted in plants with the lowest DW, CC and leached the most P and Fe. CRF applied as topdressed leached the highest amount of N. Irrigating with a known volume of WSF solution leached less N and P but more Fe than 5-6M treatment. The WSF leached similar amount of nutrients as 8-9M CRF. In a second experiment with the same fertilizers, the amounts of water, N, P and Fe leached or lost out of the containers during irrigation with a hose were quantified. Irrigating plants with a hose caused up to 62% more water loss and up to 95% more nutrient loss during irrigation with WSF than CRF. In a third experiment, Osmocote Plus 15-9-12 of 3-4, 5-6, 8-9 and 12-14 month longevities were applied at rates of 1.4, 3.4, 6.8, 10.2 and 13.6 kgm−3. The same WSF as in the first experiment was used as a control. Impatiens plants were grown in the greenhouse and consumer evaluations were performed. Plant CC, flower cover (FC) and DW were determined. Commercially acceptable plant quality was achieved with CRF application rates between 3.4 - 6.8 kgm−3. The aesthetic value of plants was not affected by the differences in DW, FC or CC. In experiment four, the same treatments as in experiment 1 were used with the addition of a treatment of a 50 - 50% blend of 5-6M and 8-9M. Impatiens plants were grown in the greenhouse and transplanted in the field where no fertilizer was applied. DW, consumer ratings (CR) and leaf greenness (LG) were obtained. Plants grown with CRF performed better in the field than WSF grown plants. CRF treated plants were less chlorotic, had greater DW and CR in the field. Based on our study, the standard 8-9M longevity CRF at medium rates resulted in lower N, P and Fe losses, and plants with increased DW, high CC and FC. Further work with other species is necessary to validate the results obtained with impatiens. However, at least for impatiens and under our experimental conditions, standard 8-9M longevity CRF at medium rates seems to be the best option.

Book excerpt: Nitrite and Nitrate in Human Health and Disease delivers a comprehensive review of nitrite and nitrate biology, from basic biochemistry to the complex physiology and metabolism of these two naturally occurring molecules in the human body. Well-organized and well referenced chapters cover the rich history of nitrite and nitrate, sources of exposure, and the physiological effects when consumed through foods containing nitrite and nitrate. The chapters are written by leading experts, all of whom share their research and perspectives in order to help define the context for benefits vs. any potential risks associated with nitrite and nitrate use, either through dietary ingestion or therapeutic dosing. This diverse collection of authors includes vascular biologists, physiologists, physicians, epidemiologists, cancer biologists, registered dieticians, chemists, and public health experts from five countries in both academia and government. Nitrite and Nitrate in Human Health and Disease provides a balanced view of nitric oxide biochemistry, and nitrite and nitrate biochemistry in physiology and in the food sciences.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Quick release fertilizers produced greater biomass than the slow release fertilizer in turf and Allamanda. Average of all six fertilizer cycles showed ornamentals consumed 38% more water than turf. Mean NO3N concentration in leachates was significantly higher in ornamentals than in turf. These results may have implications in future research on nutrition, irrigation, and environmental management of an urban landscape.
