Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2020 in the subject Earth Science / Geography - Geopolitics, , language: English, abstract: The study was guided by the following specific objectives: To establish the extent of informal settlement in Majengo Slums, Narok County, to find out the causes of informal settlement, to assess the effects of informal settlement on the environment in the Slums and to determine the policy measures to reduce informal settlements. The study will be of great value to the government in the formulation of policies and strategies for controlling informal settlement and in addition researchers and scholars will use the study to provide the basis of future studies. To provide the basis of the study findings, the researcher relied on the following theories: Malthusian Theory of Population Growth, The Optimum Theory and Theory of Demographic Transition. Data was collected using questionnaires and guides from 96 household heads obtained through cluster sampling in Majengo Slum and 5 key informants purposively selected. It was then analyzed using Microsoft Excel Package presented in tables percentages. People residing in informal settlements face challenges of service delivery. This is mainly due to the fact that land was occupied illegally, thus impacting negatively on the environment. It was in the background of the above problem, that this study sought to establish the influence of informal settlement on the surrounding environment.
Book Synopsis Speaking with Vampires by : Luise White
Download or read book Speaking with Vampires written by Luise White and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-04-28 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the colonial period, Africans told each other terrifying rumors that Africans who worked for white colonists captured unwary residents and took their blood. In colonial Tanganyika, for example, Africans were said to be captured by these agents of colonialism and hung upside down, their throats cut so their blood drained into huge buckets. In Kampala, the police were said to abduct Africans and keep them in pits, where their blood was sucked. Luise White presents and interprets vampire stories from East and Central Africa as a way of understanding the world as the storytellers did. Using gossip and rumor as historical sources in their own right, she assesses the place of such evidence, oral and written, in historical reconstruction. White conducted more than 130 interviews for this book and did research in Kenya, Uganda, and Zambia. In addition to presenting powerful, vivid stories that Africans told to describe colonial power, the book presents an original epistemological inquiry into the nature of historical truth and memory, and into their relationship to the writing of history.

Book Synopsis Development and Faith by : Katherine Marshall
Download or read book Development and Faith written by Katherine Marshall and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2007 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Publisher's description: The faith and development nexus is both a promising new focus for secular development agencies and a historic reality: for centuries, world faiths and individuals inspired by their faith have played many roles in social change and social welfare. Secular development agencies have largely operated in parallel to the world of faith-motivated development. The World Bank began in the late 1990s to explore ways in which faith and development are connected. The issue was not and is not about religion, but about the recognition that some of &… Show Morethe best experts on development are faith leaders living and working in poor communities, where strong ties and moral authority give them unique experience and insight. The World Bank's goal is to act as a catalyst and convenor, bringing together development practitioners to find common ground, understand one another's efforts, and explore differences. Development and Faith explores and highlights promising partnerships in the world between secular and faith development entities. It recounts the evolving history of relationships between faith and secular development institutions. It focuses on the Millennium Development Goals as a common framework for action and an opportunity for new forms of collaboration and partnership.

Book excerpt: "It is not for you to call profane what God counts clean." Did Christianity replace traditional African religion with the arrival of European missionaries in past centuries? Or did sub-Saharan African cultures persist in maintaining their religious worldviews even after accepting the salvific message of Christianity? In this compelling book, Laurenti Magesa argues that despite missionary Christiaity's refusal to acknowledge the worth of traditional African religious culture. the incarnational spirituality of those cultures remains vibrant and visible today, and has much to offer and teach other cultures, both Christian and not.

Book excerpt: Children at risk of marginalization in education are found in all societies. At first glance, The lives of these children may appear poles apart. The daily experiences of slum dwellers in Kenya, ethnic minority children in Viet Nam and a Roma child in Hungary are very different. What they have in common are missed opportunities to develop their potential, realize their hopes and build a better future through education.A decade has passed since world leaders adopted the Education for All goals. While progress has been made, millions of children are still missing out on their right to education. Reaching the marginalized identifies some of the root causes of disadvantage, both within education and beyond, and provides examples of targeted policies and practices that successfully combat exclusion. Set against the backdrop of the global economic crisis, The Report calls for a renewed financing commitment by aid donors and recipient governments alike to meet the Education for All goals by 2015.This is the eighth edition of the annual EFA Global Monitoring Report. The Report includes statistical indicators on all levels of education in more than 200 countries and territories.

Book Synopsis Draft Energy Bill by : Great Britain: Department of Energy and Climate Change
Download or read book Draft Energy Bill written by Great Britain: Department of Energy and Climate Change and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2012-05-22 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Government is committed to moving to a secure, safe, affordable and low-carbon energy system. This will mean achieving its climate change and renewables targets, including a 34 per cent reduction in CO2 emissions by 2020 (relative to 1990); at least an 80 per cent reduction by 2050; and by 2020 ensuring that 15 per cent of energy comes from renewable sources. This transition will require major investment in modern technologies: to renovate buildings; to provide for the electrification of much of our heating, industry and transport; and to move to cleaner power generation. It will also require major changes in the way energy is used by individuals, industry and the public sector. At the core of the Bill is the need to ensure that, as older power plants are taken offline and electricity demand continues to increase, the UK remains able to generate enough energy to meet its needs. The Energy Bill will: implement the electricity market reforms set out in the white paper 'Planning our electric future ... ' (Cm. 8099, ISBN 9780101809924); clarify the role of the regulator, Ofgem; establish an Office for Nuclear Regulation; make changes to the offshore transmission regulatory framework; and make provisions for the potential sale of Government Pipeline and Storage System. This document contains a description of the Bill's aims, the draft Bill and explanatory notes, together with a summary impact assessment.
