Book excerpt: Excerpt from Effects of Grazing Upon Western Yellow-Pine Reproduction in the National Forests of Arizona and New Mexico The fact that a greater amount Of damage occurs during the dry period Of early summer, when ordinary forage is scarce, than during other periods Of the grazing season suggests the probability that dur ing a season when feed IS unusually abundant the amount Of damage will be relatively small. This supposition is confirmed by a com parison Of the damage done In 1914 with that done In 1913. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Approximately 50% of the pulpwood-size trees and 7% of the sawtimber were killed on the moderately burned watershed. On the severely burned watershed, 90% of the pulpwood and 50% of the sawtimber trees were killed. N 0 natural tree regeneration is evident after 4 yr. Book excerpt: Scientists have had little information about how prescribed fire and cattle grazingcommon practices in many Western ponderosa pine forestsaffect plant abundance and reproduction in the forest understory. Pacific Northwest Research Station scientists began to explore how these practices affect vegetation in a five-year study of postfire vegetation in eastern Oregon ponderosa pine forests where cattle have been routinely pastured from late June or early July through early to mid August. For this area of eastern Oregon, they found that excluding cattle grazing during peak growing season increased native plant cover and grass flowering capability in ungrazed areas compared to grazed areas. Because vegetation was measured prior to releasing cattle on the land, the studys results tend to reflect lasting grazing impacts rather than simple consumption. Findings indicate that excluding cattle in areas that had been exposed to long-term grazing had more effect on vegetation than reintroducing frequent fire to the landscape. Neither spring nor fall burning increased native perennial plant cover or the number of plant species present; spring and fall reburns reduced sedge cover; fall reburns promoted early successional plant communities that included invasive species. This study is the first look at vegetation effects; a 10-year evaluation is planned in 2012.

Download or read book Red Rot of Ponderosa Pine (Classic Reprint) written by Stuart R. Andrews and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-09 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Red Rot of Ponderosa Pine Long (25, 26) intensified his attack on the red rot problem in 1914. The results of his work, mainly on timber-sale areas in the Santa Fe National Forest of New Mexico, seemed to indicate that the decay was of minor consequence in blackjacks. In 1935 Pearson and Marsh (40) pointed out that the high percentage of cull from rot in ponderosa pine could be attributed to the general overmaturity of the forests, and that in future generations the percentage of heart-rot should decrease because few trees would attain an age of more than 200 years before cutting. At the same time, however, these authors cautioned that second-growth stands might be more subject to attack by decay fungi than old growth because of their more limby character.
